Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

Guess you didnt read this?

"Just like normal procedure when releasing a game, the Open Beta has had long lead times due to testing, certification, and setting up. This means that the code you are now playing is actually quite early and not representative of the final game."

Same thing Square-Enix said for FFXIV, but going by DICE's track record the game will eventually get nicely patched up. Not holding my breath for launch to be all nice and shiny though.

I decided to check this out and here are my gripes so far (probably repeats):
- Can't configure my mouse buttons? (I see others saying this)
- I installed Origin... now I have to use my web browser to launch the game. Come on EA, I wouldn't have knocked you if you had incorporated a browser into Origin to do this like Steam does. This is just stupid.

You mean he didn't read the lies spewed to the media to ease the current, very loud outrage against the direction a great series is taking(see: down).

No-one with half a brain releases an open beta with old code. It's pointless, and solves very little. Wasting time on recreating bugs that "have already been fixed" isn't time productive, even cash mongering execs know this. Look at the SW:ToR beta, shit, I've had to redownload that game 10-12 times during the beta phases since they keep fixing a large number of drastic bugs. They see something, and they fix it. This is a 19Gb download for crying out loud, it was painful at the start.

What DICE has done is commonly referred to as "back-pedaling" and "lying".

They did either two things:
a) released us the alpha(even the alpha testers are admitting that little has changed).
b) released us a true open-beta(commonly seen as a demo, used for stress testing since the final product is already in the warehouse ready for shipping).

If a, then they are just lying to us and trying to cover it up stupidly, like the children zh1nt0 they have on board it wouldn't be surprising.

If b, then we should be worried.

I've cancelled, and I am ready to eat my words if the release ends up being any different. I don't have high hopes for this though. As others have said this game is horribly incomplete.

Exactly, and then FFXIV release was just as horrible as the open-beta was!

OMG...how many times is gonna be said till it sinks in....of course its gonna feel like BC2 when your playing a mode that never came around UNTIL BC2....I played a bit of caspian, that had a lot of the old BF2 feel to it for sure..patience people...patience...reserve judgement for the full, retail version.

I participated in the BC2 Beta as well and ill agree that it wasnt nearly as buggy but keep in mind BC2 used a modified engine that BF2 ran on...whereas BF3 is on all new very advanced code (in terms of other PC games out there)...there are going to be a lot more bugs to iron out then BC2.

How are people playing on caspian? Whenever I do a search there are zero servers running it no matter how loose I set the filter. I remember seeing two servers running it for a very short time on release day but that's it.

They took Caspian servers down a few days ago but they were up for 4-5 days I believe.

BC2 uses Frostbite. BF2 used Refractor 2, not Frostbite.

I stand corrected...and you've invalidated that part of my arguement...bastard :D

Heh, it's ok :) . We know that DICE has an excellent track record with fixing things eventually. Just that when EA says that the Beta is for finding bugs using an old client is a lie. Now them saying that the Beta is for stress testing the network to see how it will respond is the truth. If they aren't bug testing then they should have never implied that.

If you have ever programmed for fun you would know that every time you fix one thing, you're subject to break 100 other things. Testing for new bugs using old code is about as smart as taste testing pastries using moldy product. What they should do is copy what the SWTOR team said and admit that they are just looking for exploits as they have a competent team looking for bugs already.

Truth > making guinea pigs (us testing their network) feel good about themselves.

Well, hopefully this final code they speak of includes such niceties as actual collision meshes for objects. I'm getting pretty tired of getting shot through rocks, sandbag walls, jersey barriers, and pretty much every other damn thing.

yea!! they will bring caspian to beta!!!

I want to be able to change my controls correctly~!!1 I think I could be a bit happier if I could. As it is now, I can't really jump or crouch and every time I need to escape I bring up my sight cause mouse 2 is normally jump...also can't sprint and jump at the same time due to these silly controls..

QFT

I alpha-tested and even though there were not as many graphics options, it played very well for an alpha and there were not nearly as many bugs as there are now in Beta. I was/am absolutely floored that the beta is as terrible as it is. After they took down the servers recently (sunday I believe) to "update" I have not been able to play even 2 hours without at least 15 to 20 crash to desktops not to mention all of the glitches/anomalies are still there. I too may be cancelling my preorder and just wait until a few patches come out to check this out. I have played since BF 1942 and enjoyed each game immensely (well, except BFBC2...I thought it was just O.K.) and I can't express how much of a letdown this is. I know that each BF game has been patched a few times upon release for weapons balancing and other small issues but the glaring problems with this game have me second guessing where this franchise is going.

Talk about heart breaking. I hope I am wrong. Really.

Speaking of mini-map... can anyone else not see it while in full screen but its fine in windowed mode?

What the hell is up with the UMP? It is an instakill when I am on the receiving end. I read somewhere it does 33 damage per shot...

I am thinking of submitting the idea that snipers should have to be prone, just like support does, to get maximum accuracy. I see no reason why someone can pick an auto sniper and just stand there blasting away. If you force a sniper to go prone, then 1) There will be much less of them, and 2) They will have to start thinking very strategically, just like my support w/MG.

Edit: How many of you retards are going to keep calling server d/c's "ctd's"???

Um when the game crashes to my desktop?

I fucking hate this CTD shit.

There are certain servers that don't CTD or not as often.
If a server crashes, then don't join another server with the same or similar name.

This usually solves my crashes and I can play for hours on certain servers.
I keep them as my favorites.

Doesn't it update the battlelog actively though? I honestly can't tell if I lost those 4k points or not. Match wasn't even over yet :(

Technically though, BF3 uses Frostbite 2, so it's still more technically advanced than BC2. Not sure by how much, but still.

Yeah, seems OP to me as well. I mostly see people using that or the MK11, which I thought was a sniper rifle but people keep using it as an assault weapon somehow.

If it crashes in game, I think you lose your stats.
BL is updated when the round is complete.

But I have quit matches and retained my score, but who knows. I would have to test it.

On another note:

My KDR went through the roof when I used the UMP. I kinda felt like I ruined the game by dominating with that weapon, so I switched to something else.
One on one the other player didn't have a chance. The MK11 is just as deadly. But I wouldn't use them again because they aren't balanced, and cheap gameplay doesn't appeal to me.

I've never crashed after 10h on my win 7 64bit nvidia. I crash every other server on my friend's win 7 32bit ati

I'm completely with you there. While I won't actively bash someone for using the UMP, it is far more satisfying going 25/3 or whatever with a weapon that isn't notoriously Over-powered.

You actually believe that spew of bullshit? It's purely a political move to calm down the crowd before release. I stand by my statements. When it's released, refer to them, and then you'll see I was dead on. I've been in almost every BF beta/demo and played every BF game like most die hard bf2 fans have...if we've learned anything from the past, this is your BF3 game.

That's the thing about the BF series. The game can have bugs out the ass, but when you can play it, it's hard to put it down. Anyone remember the pod glitches from 2142. Man was that some shit?

This game will definitely have bugs at release. It's DICE. I would be shocked if it didn't, the game would probably suck if it didn't.
An ambitious game like this will take a month or two after launch to get right.

But I can say for certain, the gameplay is 10x better on the Conquest maps.

I hate this game's interface, I hate battlelog, and I hate Origin, but I am loving this game.

Like mentioned above, I must agree, it's very hard to put down, and it's very fun.

I cant say it enough..STAY off the MULTIPLAY servers..these crash almost 99% of the time.
