Battlefield 2: Pros and Cons

From what I've gathered, the retail version chews up hardware just like the demo, so I'll just keep my $50. If I wanted to turn the settings down and have pisspoor graphics I'd have bought a console.

You cannot be serious. You think you can't run it with this thing in your sig?
A64 3400+ CG Claw - DFI LanParty nF3
ATI X800XT PE - 2x512 Mushkin 222's
PCP&C 510SLI - Lian-Li PC75B
2xWD 36GB Raptors

The demo runs fine on my main rig. Although I dont have AA on, I never have time to notice. Everything else is set to high, and it looks great.

They thought about those who can only play SP. That is why it is primarily a MP game, and has always been said it was.
Really? cuz the quote i saw said "Full multi and single player support" not "you n00bs need to get a real intarweb."

Given that the AI was upgraded, and I can join someone elses SP game as a coop shows that the netcode for the AI is there. Ya know what that means? It means they were going to support it at some point but just dropped it.

They haven't "always" said it was going to be an MP game, so don't even try to tell me that.

Their original thought was to construct the games SP as they did with previous games, but they cut it because they claim only 2% of the servers were actually coop. Nevermind all the coop servers that are actually out there, and the fact that there are SP only mods for people to play.

As with the rest of the game, they took some of the communities suggestions, used them, and ditched the rest of the community. This is an EA staple, and its sad that DICE had to start playing that ball.

Well, I just played BF2 a bit, and if you're like me and love playing SP or coop, don't even bother buying this game right now. I was hoping it wasn't as bad as everyone was saying, but it is. SP is limited to the 16 player maps only, and there's no support whatsoever for starting a coop server. People can connect to your server if you are running a SP game, but that's about it. Really disappointing, considering how much fun it was wasting time playing BF1942/DC against the bots. At all our LAN parties for the past year or so, DC coop was pretty much all we played, and we were really excited for BF2.

They're already working on fixing these SP/coop shortcomings at Battlefield Singleplayer, so if that's your thing you might as well wait until they are done with their updates.

Yes the online is where its at, but the retail version has some huge lag bugs or something on the ranked servers.

Man, I can't emphasize enough how fucking cool it is to get a squad together in game and lead them to victory. It's such an awesome feeling to lay down a plan and have it work.

Ground-pounding is infinitely more entertaining in BF2 than it was in DC.

I always choose the Medic class and grab a tank. The combination is amazing if you can get an Engineer to ride gunner.

How do you see stats? All this talk about them and there is no help finding them

A couple more complaints:

No one seems to want to get into squads. Those who do, some idiot decides they want to be commander, and gives nonsensical orders (I was ordered to attack a boat landing - they're going to be gone by the time we get there!) yet no one is willing to mutiny.

Also, we all know most people can't fly. Hell, I can't even drive, so I keep my ass firmly behind the turret. But come on - if you can't fly, don't try to carry an entire transport chopper full of soldiers, only to send them all swimming. And whose idea was it to start us all off on the carrier, with only two ways out - a pair of boats belowdecks that take off before you can get there (if you're lucky, they at least wait for a passenger, instead of just jacking one of the two boats for themselves) or a chopper flown by an utter fuckhead.

ok i didnt read pages 2 thro 4 so dont know if this was posted. 2 times i have seen the enemy and verified that by seeing their name in red....BUT when i kill them it says ive teamkilled. Im not dumb..i was looking at the enemy 2 ft away and he had a red name. but it said i teamkilled. Some1 has had to have this problem. it even happend to my bro.

Overall I really like the game. I especialy like the way teamwork is so effective. I really like the way a full Blackhawk crew can own the entire map. I also love the Spec Ops kit, its awsome that you can zip in behind enemy lines and knock out arty and being able to take out a tank with it rocks too. The C4 owns for vehicle sabotage. I love tossing det packs on all the idle vehicles in an enemy AO and once everything is up and moving, BOOM!
For how much I like this game, it makes the bugs/problems that much more annoying.

Bugs:
When Spec Ops, the last det pack in the kit often goes off as soon as you toss it.
As far as infantry weapons go, I believe this quote from one of our clan members sums it up best:

Nah. Headshot, chest shot, doesnt matter. There's far too much randomness built into the system. (check out the object_client and object_server zip files and check out the weapons. You'll see what I mean.)

Was testing it out yesterday by setting the bots so that they don't do anything, then walking up and popping their heads. No dice. You get one-shot kills far less than 100% of the time even with headshots from 5 feet away.

Snipers are ultimately the most useless kit in the game.

Far to easy to spawn camp in this game.

The server list CP is retarded.

The Empty Win32 module PB kick.

Menu takes way too much time to bring up and close.

Teamkill kicking does not seem to go by ratio. In other words, 5 games or 50 games, the same amount of total TKs over all games will get a player kicked. (have not confirmed this for sure)

TK credit assignment is utterly retarded. One example: Hovering in the Blackhawk over a base I got nailed by a F35 in the side. I got punished for the TK. Also had this happen in a LAV 25, the Cobra hit me while trying to land and I got the TK. Also, idiots jumping on vehicles so they can intentionally punish the drivers for TKs is a prob.

*WARNING* Realism bitching follows:

Also, having spent 4 years on active duty as an M1A1/A2 mechanic I have some gripes about how some weapons effect certain things.

First off, There is no helo in existance that will take numerous hits from a hydra rocket or similar and still remain aloft.
A .50 cal machine gun to the butt of an M1 will cause limited engine/transmission damage and could fairly easily render it immobile. A SRAW or SAGGAR AT missle in the butt will definately take the M1 tank out and would ANNIHILATE the T90. I'm talking popping the turret off here. 1 shot would be more than enough. Not sure how many frontal rocket shots would knock one out though.

The only chance a BRDM has against a tank is to get a good first rocket shot off on a weak spot. If it misses, chances are it's toast. A single M1 SABOT round would rip clean through it and keep going. (I've seen it happen) For a tank (even the T90) to have a shootout with a LAV 25 or a BRDM is lunacy and shouldn't even be remotely fair. Same goes for choppers. In BF2 I've seen HMMWVs keep driving after a tank round hit. I laughed my ass off while yelling BULLSHIT repeatedly.

LAV 25 has a 25mm main gun, this would shred a Cobra or Havok gunship with ease. I've put 20 rounds into both choppers without knocking them down. This can be equivilated to hitting an unopened beer can 20 times with a .22 rifle and not busting it open.

Another gripe, one of the PRIMARY things that makes the M1A1/A2 such a badass tank is it's superior fire control system and stabilization. In the game, there is no tank stabilization. When your on the move, the reticle is all over the place. It should be stable and not drifting.

It is a game right? I mean, I bought a game...I play a game...it must be a game.

Huh...imagine that.

I think this will change once the "newness" wears off and the veteran players start shining through.

I've managed to lead several squads into battle successfully. It is admittedly a bit overwhelming at times (Plotting a strategy, deciding on a strategy, then relating that strategy to your squad all while trying to stay alive and play for yourself at the same time). It's a lot of micromanagement and doesn't always end in success.

Tonight I was learning the ropes and going solo with a great deal of success.

The game automatically chose me as a Squad leader and, one by one, the better solo players of the match began to gravitate to my squad. These players understood the nature of the game. I was a Medic, one was Heavy Infantry (Support), and yet another was an Engineer. We had a couple of Spec Ops too. It was a bit overwhelming at first, because I was doing three things at once (Playing the game, strategizing, and relating the strategy I chose to my teammates). Sometimes I would call everyone to a point outside of the main battle to take a second and coordinate with them. We would then move in as a single entity and dominate.

Needless to say, this was one of the most cohesive matches I have experienced in BF2. We were fucking annihilating as a Squad. If one of them was injured I would heal/revive them. If I was killed trying then they would pick up my kit and heal me. The same worked in the varying fields of Engineering and the damage our vehicles were taking.

Unfortunately, the other half of the team was TKing eachother at the airfield and crashing the helicopters into the ground.

"Making the weapons too weak makes the online game suck. If you sneak up behind someone and start shooting, they shouldn't be able to turn around and shoot back."

Modern Armmor is way stronger now dude:)

The anti-tank weapon is a joke. I realize that a one shot kill would kind of make tanks useless in the game, but maybe two should kill it.... geez. Especially from behind. I peppered a MEC tank 4 times from behind...ran out of ammo and watched it drive off.

And yes... some of those heavy machine guns should damage tanks more.

And while the tanks should be easier to kill.... they should have more firepower. The blast from them is a joke. I can lay a round 2 feet from someone and they walk away.
And yes they are unstable aren't they for super high tech tanks.

Ehhh, the weapon damage in the Battlefield series has ALWAYS been messed up. Except maybe in BF1942, when a 30-06 to the chest would kill (Actually, scratch that - in their last patch, the M1 Garand takes 2-3 chestshots....). First of all, the MP5 should do LITTLE damage to anybody wearing any amount of body armor. Do you guys know what an MP5 is? It's a machine pistol. It has all the inaccuracy of a pistol, all the low power of a pistol, etc, just full-auto. 9mm bullets shouldn't do much damage to anybody with good body armor. That's just one of many damage complaints I have...

I would type more, but I'm off to play Counterstrike: Source. Where a well-placed shot from a large-caliber gun will actually kill you. (Don't even get me started on the AWP though, that gun was a mistake from the beginning...)

A mod could fix all of this.

One other thing I want to see is vehicle damage. Maybe some pieces flying off? Would be cool as hell to see shit flying off when tearing into a humvee with a heavy machine gun.

totally agree with you. I hope, as someone else said, that a 'realism' mod can fix all of this.

heres one specific complaint I have. i was playing as commander of my team, the other team was down 2 players at one point, I died, and was switched over to the other team, leaving the other team commanderless. very gay. auto balance should NOT switch over a commander.

Thing is, y'see, if they made the Abrams realistic it'd suck. For all the high-tech stabilisation and radar jammaging etc they neglected the fundamentals, such as a simple rifled turret or even a basic decent tank. The M1 costs a bundle but is, in fact, not that great. And personally, even if it was more realistic i'd feel really weird looking out of my abrams hurtling along at 50mph over rocks ang gulleys with my sights stock still, lol :s

Not sure if you are having problems or not but I have seen lesser systems than yours eat this game for lunch. Also not sure why you would miss out on a great experience with a nice rig like that.

Damage to helicopters is completely unrealistic. No helicopter can fly away after direct hit with 120mm tank shell. In BF2 it takes *3* direct hits from a tank to down a heli. Bloody ridiculous. Desert Combat got it right, 1 hit from a tank to anything that flies usually kills it.

I agree that it's a game and damage should be exaggerated, but damn, not THIS exaggerated.

And yeah, people are spawn camping bitches. I had one asshole called "Smeagollum" park a tank in one spot and blow me away at least 4 times the instant I spawned. Finally gave up and reset my spawn point back at base - had to hoof it all the way back to the front line.

Finally, why is it that you can lose all of your spawn points (which deactivates your squad leader spawn as well) and yet the game doesn't end? It's no fun to sit there, unable to spawn, watching the tickets count down. I jumped into a game like that, got maybe two minutes of gameplay, and then sat there unable to do anything until I gave up and disconnected.

Did you ask your team for assistance to stop the camper? Did you keep spawning at that location because it was the only spot left? Not able to spawn with your squad?

A server setting can control the flag cap victory conditions.

I reset my spawn point back at base at that point (the only spawn point left) but what good would asking my squad for help have done? These people were a bunch of fuckheads.

I swear, if you see me on a server, don't join my squad. I'm like a magnet for shitty squad leaders (and I know better than to think I can do the job myself). Save yourselves!

In the demo I spawn camped all the time. I would grab a tank and drive all the way to the MEC base, with no resistance. If no ones going to stop me, why shouldn't I. Besides the MEC jets just keep doing loops carpet bombing the carrier anyway .. so its the same thing on both sides.

The problem I found is that the MEC side always had good jet pilots. But if you were on the carrier waiting for a blackhawk or the other chopper you would get it, it would take off .... then promptly roll upside down and kill everyone.

N00bs shouldn't fly ... practice flying in single player ... not online.

Ah, got ya. Yeah the pub experience can really make this game suck for a lot of people. One of the main reasons I am loving BF2 is because I am playing with about 10 friends each night and we talk via TS and work together. Makes it one of the great online experiences I have had on my PC.

I will avoid your squads if I run into you on a pub server! :)

You guys use Team Speak, not the built in VOIP? I've been trying to get the voip working and can't really tell if it works. I only hear people using it a little bit.

I'd like to get into the whole voice thing.

Teamspeak for now when we are pub servers and want to work together there. When some of our competitive servers get online by this weekend, we will work with VOIP (even though I am not impressed with it much yet).

Yeah, the squad system is pretty fun stuff if done properly. Hell, all you really need is one good squad to join. The rest of the people can usually go their own way, but a 6 man squad that's well led and well organized can be a force to be reckoned with.

While I haven't yet tried out the medic/engineer tank combo does sound like one hell of a pairing. I will say, though, that I love playing as a medic. It seems that most games make the medic an underpowered support character with a medkit and a pistol, but in BF2 I can hold my own in battle as a medic. There's nothing better than cruising into a spawn point with your squad, killing an enemy that just took out one of your boys, and reviving your fallen comrade with the paddles as you take the control point.

I am loving this game after the short time I've spent with it, and really I just have to shake my head at all of the people complaining about a lack of realism.

You got me thinking... What if BF2 was like CS? And you had to buy your stuff :p

Biggest con for me: Too easy to TK/kill yourself with vehicle. I got out of a car on a slope and the car instantly slid down and killed me with a nudge.

I know honestly, are all the combatants Erkel or something ? jeez even a slight breeze from a passing vehicle kills you.

That sucks but its not something thats ever going to stop - if you were sitting in a tank capping the flag would you let somebody spawn and run off only to come back and blow you and your tank up? Its kill or be killed, I'm not condoning spawn camping but this is a virtual war and nobody's going to play "honorable" because it doesn't help. I tried it - all it does is lower your score. :D

It depends what you mean by spawn camipng. If the person has parked a tank next to a flag and is killing people as they spawn in an attempt to capture that point then there's nothing wrong with it. If the person is sitting out of the capture range and killing people as they spawn without trying to complete the objectives then it's dirty and inexcusable.

If one team has been cornered in their base then I don't see a big problem with spawn camping. As the attacking team you've captured all points and your objective is to box the other team in and go for the kill. It can be frustrating for the team that's been cornered, but it doesn't seem terribly dirty to me.

Agreed. The only that irritates me a lot is when MEC drives an APC out to the carrier and unloads on you. And for some reason the Gun on the carrier doesn't do jack to it.

Anti-tank takes care of them quite nicely, and considering alot of noobs take the planes and crash them, the carrier is usually untouched 99% of the time. So gotta give em creds for makin do with what ya got...
