another building new pc thread

well i just wanted to know how gaming will be on a big screen because i was thinking about playing on my 70' tv but if there will be some issues im just gonna have to play on my 19' monitor

little update on my rig, today finally after 3 days newegg has verificated my check and i hope they will ship it soon

my 70' tv

Wow, that's taller than my house! :p

little update on my rig, today finally after 3 days newegg has verificated my check and i hope they will ship it soon

You must be getting excited.

After planning to build my first computer (heh, it sound's like a kids's toy) for 8 months, it doesn't look like i'll have enough enough money. I was hoping to buy everything by June/July in time for the end of my A-level examinations so i have all summer to tinker with it. But, unfortunately, i won't be experiencing £2200 worth of computer for a good few months. Anyway, i hope you enjoy yours! Keep us posted on shipping etc.

google doesnt know what verificated means :( I thought google knew everything?!?!?

But I think its a good thing that newegg has verificated it! Good luck on your build!

ok so i have a little update on my rig, i finally received my tracking number for most of the parts, and it looks like my rig will be here on tuesday

my rig finally came in today :):):)

but i already have a question
im about to install cpu and in the user guide it says that if im installing core 2 duo cpu i have to connect the chassis fan cable to CHA_FAN1 to ensure system stability
and my question is which fan do i connect to the cha_fan1? is it the cpu fan? i have the original cpu fan and also zalman 9700 and which one i suppose to connect to the cha_fan1?
i also have a fan that came with the stacker 832 but the cable from it does not fit in the cha_fan1

don't worry about it. they're just making sure you have a chassis fan. just make sure you have enough fans for your stacker, lol.

thank god cuz i was worrying that im missing something

so i should just forget about the intel cpu fan and connect the zalman to the cpufan connector and that should be it for cpu fans?

Yes... you only need to plugin the fan of the HSF unit you will be using, lol.

so here is little update
i got everything to work, but i had some problems with mouting zalman 9700 cuz it is huge!! but after an hour of trying to figure out how to mount it i got it to work perfectly, also it is really loud compare to other components, but i can live with that
i really love cm stacker since it has the option of taking out the motherboard plate, which helped me a lot in mounting everything, after installing everything there is still pletny of space inside the case, which is really a good thing
i was really suprised on how big the 8800gtx is, and since the asus p5n comes with a audio card i dont know if im going to be able to fit a 2nd 8800gtx without removing the audio card since its right above the pci slot (only thing im dissapointed about is that i though evga was giving a dark messiah game along with the 8800gtx, but it looks like not anymore)
the silencer 750w is quite large but it fits without a problem into the stacker, the only thing i didnt like about it is the color (red)
so when i was finally done with installing all of the components i installed the 64bit windows xp since i do not own vista
and of course my 4gb of ram are recgonized without a problem
right now im running the two 120mm fans that came with the stacker and also the zalman 9700 and everything seems to be cooled down at least for right now, i probably get one more 120mm fan so i can mount it on top of the case
8800gtx seems to do fine on my 70 inch tv with the 1920x1080 resolution, even when playing games i dont see any shadowing, which i am very happy about :)
i have only tried games like company of heroes, nfs carbon and battlefield 2, and one of the problems i had is that i wasnt able to display bf2 on my big screen cuz the game would not turn on
company of heroes worked perfectly on 1920x1080 resolution with all high settings
and nfs carbon look alright since i was only able to set the resolution 1024x768 (is there any patch to set a higher resolution?)
the only problem i have with my new rig is that when i restart my pc it wont turn back on, the monitor just shows no signal but the whole computer is still running, does anybody knows what may be the problem?
i've never been good at hiding cables and i have to figure out a way to hide them because it does not look pretty

i will post some pics later when i come back home :)

How much room is there for a PSU in that case; would you say a 220mm long PSU would fit in there? Also, is the build quality good?

my silencer is 180mm and it fits without a problem and 220mm would also fit since there is enough place to even fit 300mm long psu(the only thing that a person with a psu longer than 230mm would have to take off the fan that is placed on top of the case
almost the whole case is aluminum so its a pretty good build, and overall i really like the way the whole case is setup, cuz whatever you want to put in it, it will fit!

i still cant find a way to fix my problem with restarting the pc, cuz everytime i want to restart the monitor says no signal but the whole rig is still working

i will post some pics when i find my camera :)

Can't wait!

Regarding that PSU again, are there metal prong-like brackety things sticking down from the top of the case that would have to be bent in order to fit larger PSUs? Also, how much room is there from the end of the case to the brackets, 230mm you say?

yes there are those metal things sticking down because they are holding the top fan(if mounted) but you can easily bend them, and they are about 250mm away from the end of the case so the 220mm psu will fit
from the end of the case to my dvd drive there is about 400mm of space, but there are metal things that help to hold the psu and they are about 310mm from the end of the case

also i found a good review of this case with plenty of pictures where you can kinda see what you need
http://www.barrys-rigs-n-reviews.com/reviews/2007/hardware/nvstacker/nvstacker1.htm

and here is the emtal thing thats holding the psu and the top fan

also here u ahve a picture of top of the case

Thank you ever so much for those links and confirmation; i'm getting this case! Although, i don't really want to bend the brackets because i'm likely to install a top fan. The thing is, a lot of people say the build quality isn't really representative of it's high price tag; does anything rattle, and how noisy is it?

;)

well if you are going to install that 220mm psu then there is no need to bent anything
for the quality of the build i think that it is really good, even though some people say that 830 is better than 832 (not really sure why though)
i cant really tell right now how noisy it is because right now i have the side taken off and the only thing i can hear is my zalman 9700

here you have a lot of reviews on each of the stacker, they might help you answer some of your questions :)

everyone says that the side doors are hard to put on, but i really didnt had any problems with putting them on

Does the front door scrape along the floor at all? I don't want it to scratch my desk. :p
How sturdy is the whole thing? I noticed that the small rubber feet don't seem to offer much stability, especially with a heavy PSU making the case top-heavy.

the front doors are about 3mm from the ground so there shouldnt be a problem with scratching your desk, also most of the bottom is cut out in order to open the door
the case does not move at all, the rubbers are small but the case is still very stable
also you will receive wheels that you can mount in order to move it around if you need
btw. i hope your desk will be able to hold this case cuz it is pretty heavy

i also have a question, is it ok to install both xp and vista on the same hdd?

i was hoping that this day will not come, my first big problem with my new rig
yesterday i was trying to hide some cables etc. after i was done i turned my computer on and the monitor would no respond, so i turned it off and turn it on again, and everything was working, so today morning i woke up, trying to turn it on, the monitor wont start, everything else is working but the monitor, does anyone know what might be wrong?
i have checked all the connections and everything seems right, i took out the gpu, put it back in and still nothing
i have also checked the monitor on another pc and its working

so im still trying to figure out my problem
i have checked everything, i tried one memory sticki then the other, then i replace the hdd, i tried to clear cmos and still nothing
the weird thing is that when i turn on my pc all of the fans are working but things like hdd led is not turning on, mouse nad keyboard are not turning on, one of the fans also is not turning on but the rest of stuff like dvd drive, heatsink, the gpufan the ethernet port are all working fine so i really dont know what might be wrong with it
i read that i should listen to beeps when i turn on my pc but there are none
the worst thing is that no one that i know around me has pc that i could try switching parts with and see whats wrong
it kinda looks like its the motherboard but it is litthing up the green led when i turn on the pc
also i read that it might be the memory voltage that this motherboard needs a voltage higher than 2.0 but i cant get to bios so i cant change it
does anybody have any idea what might be wrong?

so it looks like im going to return my mobo and get a new one since i cant find any way to fix my problem
the worst thing is that i dont even know if its the mobo that caused to problem
les hope so that if i get a new one everything will work fine

Sorry to hear about that, dude. I hope i don't have these sort of troubles; i'm ordering mine in a couple of weeks! Keep us posted.

What type of monitor do you have?

If it is by any chance the Viewsonic 20.1" 2025VXW or somehtin like that... these monitors have known DVI trouble.

Turn off PC.
unplug both power cable and DVI cable.
push power button until the light stops coming on (clear the caps)
re plug everything and boot up.

I ahve this monitor; it's a pain in the ass. (just a heads up if you happen to have this same one..)

i have Acer AL1916w, i tried your solutionn but it still does not work
im in a process of packing my mobo, and tomorrow im taking it to ups to send it to newegg
if the mobo isnt causing the problem than i am really going to be pissed off, cuz in a omnth im leaving for a vacation and it take a while to reutn something and then get it back so i just hope it is the mobo and that i am not going to have any more problems with it

edit: ok so i've packed my mobo and now since i have some free time i started reading some reviews and comments on this board and i just found on newegg that this mobo works only good with 1.8 volt ram(mine is 2.0) and it looks like i made a mistake sending a RMA to newegg about the board, but oh well
i just hope that if i receive the new mobo i will be able to get into bios and maybe somehow change the voltage on my ram(is that even possible to change it to lower voltage?, and will it affect the performance?)
here is my ram
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220227

The problem with the board is that sometimes they don't boot up if the RAM's rated voltage is too high because, by default, i think the RAM voltage is set to around 1.8v in the BIOS. This means that a lot of people have had to put RAM which will run at 1.8v (like a cheap 512MB stick) just to get into the BIOS to increase the voltage before they put in their proper RAM. The other problem is that, if you run your RAM at high voltages, like 2.3v+, it has a tendancy to overvolt and kill them. I either of these are the problems you're experiencing because you booted up fine with your memory and you're running it at really low voltages. I'm guessing it's just a dud motherboard, and you're doing the right thing by RMAing it; although, i could be wrong.

so when i receive my new mobo, what kind of voltage i should set up for my patriot's?
on website it says its 2.0volt so should i set it 1.8 or 2.2 in order to not have anymore troubles with this?

Just set it to 2.0V since that's the standard voltage for your RAM.

so finally after about 2 weeks i received my new mobo
i attached all the components etc. turn it on.....and its not working, is still wont boot, so i cant even get into bios
im so PO and i really dont know what to do anymore, cuz if its not the mobo it might be the video card, but i cant rma it cuz im leaving soon and i wont be able to test it when it comes back(since it takes about 2 weeks for the whole process)
anybody have any suggestions?

Try to boot with one stick of RAM. As others have said, the problem with higher voltage rated RAM is that sometimes it will prevent a system from POSTing because it isn't getting enough voltage to run properly. With one stick (and thusly less draw) you may be able to get the machine to POST, get in to BIOS, and set the vdimm to 2.0 as it should be. Then shut down and install the other stick, and it should work fine.

Also try booting without the video card and see if you at least get beep codes. Also make sure all the power connectors are not loose.

tried the one stick idea and it does not work, and when i take out the video card i dont hear any beeps
gosh...... looks like getting a pc was a big mistake................

edit: now im thinking about getting a laptop since this rig does not seem to work and i dont have enough time to rma anymore parts, so i will probably rma all the parts for refund and just get a gaming laptop

but now what kind of laptop i should get ?
i found asus g1 and g1s which a lot of people preffer for gaming, only thing is that its only 15.4
there is also xsp but its over my budget (up to $2200)
any suggestions?

edit: i also found g2s for $2100 so i could still afford it and its 17 :)
so i stil dont really know what i should do, since i have only 11 days left and i really need smth to game on :>
