Android Based Video Game Console Kickstarter

Yes, I'm going to love playing cellphone games scaled up to 1080p on my 50" TV! Yeah, the developers would start making games with that in mind, but on that hardware I don't see them doing anything spectacular.

And what's up with the anonymous twitter link?

For a $100 ready to go box for a TV that runs android and I could use it for media playback and stuff, sure. As a gaming console? No thanks.

There's already an open gaming platform you can hook up to your TV. It's called a PC. It hooks up with the same HDMI cable a console does and it lets you do all sorts of other non-gaming things too!

^^ This +1

while this is a great idea..

its a detrimental step backwards for gaming.
we're supposed to be pushing the technological envelope every year/decade/generation.

this is bringing us back to square one if it takes off and people adopt it over the "big 3"

its small, cute, has efficient power for casual games.. but eventually it has to evolve..
Understandable but reality disagrees with you. The future in gaming is opportunity.

The idea of turning this into a emulating monster is enticing. I'm going to keep an eye on this.

The average contribution is around $125 if my math is right. That is simply incredible.

The quality of mobile (Android and iOS) games are horrid at this point in time. I don't understand why anyone would want something like this when you have X360, PS3 and PC on hand.

Random side note: The period at the end of "Hackers welcome." in the project description (right after closeup picture of the controller) links to the anonymous twitter page. wtf?

anonymous front to fund operations and they are all actors

;)

THIS!

Plus, if you want to hack-around and PC game on the cheap, there's always Brazos barebones:

More powerful than any Android platform in existence, and about the same price!

Ouya just posted this in the comments:
Let's be real here people: OUYA will not roll out with outdated tech. We're still in development. We're hearing what you are saying and taking notes. :)

Welp, that was enough for me. I'm in for the $99 level.

This is very interesting, I wonder if there is real backing behind this if Nvidia would give them an exclusive first with Tegra4 which shouldn't come with the memory bottleneck and comes with their own GPU on it (based on Kepler).

This is kind of exciting, of course the price has to be right, but if I can bring a long a very simple machine with me and hook it up for some free or damn near free games I'm all for it!

Cell or Xenon are multitudes more powerful than even the best ARM processor.
I'm sorry, this would have been awesome about 10 years ago, but not in 2012.

I get what they are going for, but they are going to lose their asses on this project.
I just don't see this making enough money to fund them properly to keep it afloat for more than a few months, tops.

Yeah I'm praying to god that I can play SNES / AMIGA / NEO GEO. etc on this puppy
I sure hope so.

...and then I saw the donations page... what were you saying super noob? :D
I'm in for $100.

this is what I thought. If I can use as an network media player for my MKVs and it's hackable to support newer/ custom roms 99 bucks is a bargain.

Would you get a console if the game prices were the same?

I would have bought an X-box 360 AND a PS/3...

If the hot new games came out at $39.

As it is, I have neither even though I was a console gaming fanatic for YEARS up until PS/2 or so...

$59 launch price for console games just pissed me off, way off. So I just stopped being a console gamer. Fuck Microsoft and Fuck Sony, their greed just went too far over the edge.

I am going to turn mine into an Arcade Emulator!

This or the Raspberry, Im not quite sure yet.

Seems to have a good value in a small package. It atleast has customer and developer in mind over revenue.

Looks like it has potential.

Oh a fragmented console! :p

Quite the opposite. Finally, a standard control scheme that will hopefully get adopted to other ARM devices. PC's had the joysticks mapped out right from the start. But on android, you need custom software nad have to map the joystick to the keyboard.

The console aspect in a controller is already played out, we have a PS shaped controller that has every NES/SNES game every produced in it. Time to expand that to ARM.

This will likely fall flat on it's face, gamers want the latest graphics and cpu technology, not an android linux box running on slow ARM processors.

The problem as I see it, developing damn near anything these days, is the patent trolls. And big companies like Microsoft, Apple, etc... that have thousands upon thousands of patents.

The odds are pretty damned good that you are going to step on a patent somewhere, even if unintentionally. Just look at some of the bullshit that's been awarded patents. Far too wide of scope.

If they don't like your potential competition, well, they just slam you with a patent and away you go. Broke.

This is why innovation is at a stand still. The patent system has screwed everyone.

That may be true. Nintendo had the patent for the Cross on their D-Pad, so everyone else made a circle with a cross in it.

Bypassing a patent is that simple. Which was why we were shocked at apple insisting that the Gingerbread unlock screen was an infringement.

Our business model is simple. It's identical to the mobile game model – nothing fancy or sneaky. We'll share revenue – you get 70 percent.

:( . I was hoping it would be slightly more...

I really don't think they are marketing it for something that it is not. Everyone knows that its not a powerhouse, but what it lacks in raw power it makes up for in creativity, and people always want something to call their own, so in that respect I think it will be a winner.

This or the Raspberry, Im not quite sure yet.

This will body slam the Raspberry Pi and then drown it with the amount of power this will have in comparison.

I am very excited to see if this pans out, free/cheap and easy to play games that are constantly evolving or changing instead of waiting months for a decent sequel is enticing.

WAIT WAIT WAIT...where the hell is this company located? Ladies talkin about without Kickstarter the product couldn't be done which raises questions like:

Why the hell are you in a massive nice ass office which I know costs a shit load I'm sure

-and-

Without Kickstarter was she just going to fire everyone and say tough shit?

I highly doubt that nothing would have ever been made without Kickstarter UNLESS they had just planned and hoped from the get go that Kickstarter would both A) Be around and B) Actually work for them.

I don't know...I'm glad Kickstarter works...but I just have a VERY hard time believing all these CEO's and shit that spout "OMFG NEVER WOULD HAPPEN WITHOUT SOMETHING WE DIDN'T EVEN HAVE WHEN WE STARTED OUR COMPANY!!!1!!1"

I know it certainly HELPS but I just can't help but feel ripped off or something...hmmm...

I can't believe how much money this is getting. I still have serious doubts about this, but good for them.

I have two questions
1) How are they able to get a tegra3 device down to $99?

2) Are there no ARM processor tuned to be more powerful and less power eifficient? Are all ARM cpu's basically cell phone/tablet processors?

I sure as hell don't wan't to play crappy cell phone games on my tv...especially for $99. However, I would definitely consider it for a massive emulation box.

1) To tell you the truth the Tegra's line is probably cheaper because of the limited memory bus making it cheaper to make and cheaper to use.

2) Having an ARM in a device such as this makes no sense other then trying to get tablet/smartphone developers on board. Which does actually make sense since there is a metric fuckton of free games already that will work on this, albeit very LOW resolution. Tegra3 was stated today by one of the developers as not being a locked in device. I'm sure if this gets any type of increase in hype Nvidia could be tempted to give them an early exclusivity to Tegra4 which supposedly (rumored) takes a new stance from Nvidia on their ARM platform.

ARM processors are very cheap. The most expensive components in a phone or a tablet are the screen, the battery and the amount of included flash memory.
