Android Based Video Game Console Kickstarter

Seems like they are basically trying to make an EVO2

The EVO2DX is a neat win7/Android box, and comes with the EVO2DX Pocket tablet too, although it's certainly priced for a different market than the plain android boxes.

Except it is aimed at a home console market. It has to compete or it is destined to go the same way as all the other "niche" gaming devices.
.

True, but this thing is getting a lot of support from top indie devs and game studios - so I doubt it'd be extremely niche. We'll see though. I'm just excited because of the endless, crazy shit you can do with this thing. It's open source too :D Like using an Android tablet as a controller, idk. lol You're right, the hardware is crummy but sometimes limitations inspires more creativity!

Hardware is crappy, yes. But, for some of us that made games on the C64 and early PC's, it looks like a great thing to play with. I found some nice tut's on making NES homebrew games, and that's some crappy hardware compared to today. But, I'm learning a lot.

Oh yeah? And what has Microsoft brought to the table that is worth a damn in the past 5 years?......If it weren't for Direct X and Xbox Microsoft would be out of business in a heartbeat.

lol are you really that dense or is this a troll post

i honestly can't imagine anyone being that dense...

xbox and directx are probably .00000000001% of microsoft's bottom line... desktop os (how about like 90% of every PC sold), server os, office, exchange, mssql.... that's where the money is....

More than enough if you have any decent amount of experience with console controllers.
If you say so. I'll reserve judgment until I've actually held the thing, though.

What's wrong with the Tegra 3?
The GPU is underwhelming compared to other current offerings. If you're producing a console that supports 1080p output, you really want something at least comparable to the iPad's SGX 543MP4. It seems PowerVR also has an octo-core variant of the SGX 543, which would have been a fantastic choice for this thing.

You're not very bright are you? The XBOX Division was losing money until a couple of years ago...

I completely with ya there. :) I've been considering getting into some indie game devving myself as a hobby. This would be perfect!

Past 5 five years? Hmm.. can't think of any. Windows 7? lol But Microsoft has does the world a favor in making PCs accessible around the world with their software. I know the big 'ol M$ is teH evil with their bad business practices, but you've got to give credit where's due.

Windows 7 doesn't count, its simply an updated version of Vista.

Let's make it not count if it doesn't support your argument. Selective introduction of only favorable facts is a good idea when you're trolling.

I'm in as a $99 supporter. Could be killer. it will be funded today no doubt which means it will move up the date at least a month to use getting our console.

I'm supporting this to simply show Microsoft and EA they could lose their spot if they are not careful and do not take it's customers serious. The NEW WORLD ORDER could possibly replace them both.

CONSOLE POWER! /angry fist

*nods* I gotcha. Perhaps they're using the Tegra 3 for ease of development? I knew about the graphics being more powerful in the iPad's latest SOC, but just thought they'd go with defacto hardware that's a commodity in most Android platforms.

I do agree though, in benchmarks, the Tegra 3 is less powerful. Game developers may have to work harder on the storytelling and gameplay aspects instead of relying on eye candy.

For everything that is included with Microsofts OS , there is a cheaper alternative that can achieve the same and sometimes better result.

Problem is not a lot of people are informed about it. Just look at the new Raspberry Pi's for example. If you need to do office work 42 dollars will get you and entire PC and the OS is free.

Tegra 3s graphics performance is completely abysmal. I still backed one anyways, could be a cool toy once it gets hacked.

There is a difference in telling the truth and trolling. Go read up.

Yeah I'm praying to god that I can play SNES / AMIGA / NEO GEO. etc on this puppy

You will be able to. I can play SNES and N64 titles on my Android phone. I see no reason you shouldn't be able to on this.

What's up with the name though? Why "Ouya"? "Ouya" sounds like a Polynesian fruit or something.

In for one. I don't expect it to be some miracle console that solves all the issues in the current market nor to bring forward some new graphics revolution. But I feel it's a step in the right direction to putting some power back in the customer's hands; not being locked in to proprietary mechanisms. Modern day consoles will always have their place.

Seems to be going up quickly. It was under a $200k when I jumped in and now it seems to be going up at about $100 per second.

They probably owe Steve a thank you letter and a novelty keychain or something.

Yeah it's lunchtime on the east coast. Currently it's about $10,000 every 5 mins. I'm assuming it will only increase over the next 6 - 8 hours untill it peaks, whenever that happens is anyone's guess. I wonder if the big news outlets will carry this story. I wonder if this is a record for Kickstarter.

This kinda of attention scares me actually. Anything and everything is for sale. This is the kinda shit that gets everyones attention. Last thing I want is EA buying Kickstarter 0_o

So this is basically a nexus 7 - screen + gamepad + tv out.

If you think about it. This console has the ability to really up end the whole console scene. Think about it. Cheap hardware, downloadable content. It cut's all the excess red tape from creating a game. Developers could really stand to benefit a vast amount and line their own pockets instead of fat ass's like Bobby K and others.

This console represents what Nintendo has been about for a long time. Cheap hardware and simple yet very fun games.

I would be a little concerned if I were Nintendo and others. This is actually a pretty big deal and crosses paths with a lot of the big names.

True.

Maybe there'll be a Kickstarter for a bluetooth or USB gamepad next that will turn the Nexus 7 into a gaming console. :p

There are already gamepads that work on the nexus7, too bad it doesn't have hdmi output

This is going up like mad. Seems like I refresh every 10 seconds and it goes up 1-2k. They are clearly going to have no problem meeting and hugely surpassing their goal.... and I'm all about it. This could make a really sweet emulator machine or something.

Man, I bet the people at Google wish they would have thought of this instead of that stupid ass Google Q

If I were one of their devs i'd add multi-tv support for some serious multiplayer fun. Imagine 12 players across three TVs... oh man.

This console is something Google should've done with their Chrome box or whatever. It would've had a lot more initial traction.

Wow, this thing is going nuts. When I posted the first time in this thread it was around 300k or so...now upwards of 600k.

I just read a huge article on "Android Fragmentation" and it's not nearly as bad as it sounds for the simple fact that Android and the phones it's on is constantly evolving every single day. The arguments that were made by developers early on who coined the phrase, those phones are now exiting the market at an extremely fast rate as where ICS and Jelly Bean are closing the gap hugely.
