Hmm...

I was hoping for more improvements for Red Orchestra 2 :(

Even with two CAP updates addressing RO2, a single GPU still performs better than two in Crossfire for me :(

Sucks that they are forced to waste time fixing terrible games... I dont think I need to add the titles of said games either ;)

Ehhhh ..... TERRIBLE timing imho.

Rage which is a sub-par sell-out shovelware crap game destined for the $10 dollar bargain bin is distracting AMD from giving us performance improvements for a real game, BF3.

FUCK ........

Haha so true. Who gives a flying **** about Rage. AMD/Nvidia should be working 100% on BF3 drivers.

Best post of the year. AMD should only put their attention to one game because its obvious everyone only plays BF3 and nothing else.

Is it just me or is there just something wrong with the drivers these days. I thought a game was suppose to work out of the box with minimum graphic driver issues. Seems now we have to have a driver update for every game that comes out? Are the developers really going outside the specs for the API's that it's causing this much of a headache? They need to come up with one API that everyone uses and call it good. I'd say OpenGL. Microsoft just needs to can DirectX/

Which game are you referring to? Remember that BF3 is not even released yet. I don't think beta drivers for a beta game is really that much of a stretch.

You also have to remember that the WHQL process is stupid slow. By the time WHQL drivers are released for download, they were probably submitted more than 2 weeks prior. The only way for developers to get drivers to customers faster is to release non-WHQL driver aka beta drivers.

As far as rage, I wouldn't read too much into it. Terrible game is terrible.

It's "ALWAYS" been like this. I can recall countless times of playing driver roulette with both Nvidia and ATI (and Matrox/S3 for that matter) To get games to play at all, or sometimes just optimally. Especially when a game is first released. I was trying to think of the earliest time I can recall having driver fun. Quake 1 is the first one that comes to mind but I am sure there were others before it.

Back in the day, a lot of games shared the same engine and were not so heavily (and variation in) coded. There also weren't a mass of console ports *sigh*. So things are worse, but it is nothing new.

Tried these three days ago, and they work great in Rage, and BC2. But Adobe Premiere Pro will not work. When the system first boots up, gives me an error by the clock saying my system has recovered from a video driver error. When I try to load up Premiere, system hangs for a second, then gives me the error again and I have to end task Premiere.

I need Premiere to work... and have games play better. Premiere works fine with the last official drivers. But 11.10 Preview 2 and 3 does the same thing. So as of now, Im having to reinstall the older drivers to edit, and newer ones to play Rage. Ive tried uninstalling several times, running driver cleaner, not running it, installing over the drivers, etc. To the point where I had a driver cocktail going on. Ugh!

these drivers break my system, drivers crash at windows startup and make it so some programs wont run or install.

uninstalled them and going back to 11.10 preview 2 works fine tho.

Why keep OpenGL? 95% of the games on the market are done in DirectX, and you want to throw it away and keep OpenGL? Seems to me that the game with the most issues right now is built with....OpenGL.

Outside API spec..? Rage's engine was made for Nvidia cards. Carmack isn't the god of PC game engine coding any longer. He's Godfather 3 now. Forgettable, regrettable.

If you want a game engine that shows you how it's supposed to be done, look at Source. Hell, look at Frostbite 2. How that didn't make my 5770 chop chop chug in 1080p (running at lowest of course) was outright surprising. Pop in Source and it's go-time on most machines, pop in Frostbite 2 and you might have to adjust, and have a minimum of a quad core with L3 (avoid the cheaper Athlon X4s?) and it's like when you first saw the huge scenes in Unreal 1 thinking "wow, this would never work in the Quake engines".

Rage should look as pretty as those PR shots, but those turned out to be Id making 4k x 3k in-engine renders, something they've been doing since.. I forget.

11.10 previews 1 through 3 break OpenGL for every program but Rage, basically. So no Minecraft, no hardware acceleration in Photoshop/Premiere, etc.

Good to know thanks. Guess Ill be just installing/uninstalling all the time until they fix it then. Trying to beat Rage before BF3 comes out, because then Ill just drop it I know.

11.10 preview suck hard. Enabling eyefinity crashes and reboots my machine.

Agreed. I get a BSOD everytime I load up a Black ops map.

I also get random BSOD while playing warcraft.

Back to Preview V2

I haven't had any problems with the V2 drivers at all.

I changed to V3 last night + CAP 9.3 so everything will be a go for BF3.

I noticed that I got less performance in Rage, not so much texture problems but lower FPS.
With V2 I had a flat 60 FPS, now with V3 my FPS looks alot like the Hard Rage Performance Review.

Does it matter, no. I finished Rage for what it's worth. Pretty good game over all, but the crappy textures killed it for me. The ending was also very lackluster, it was like id just had to put an ending on the game so it could be shipped out.

Will see how BF3 does, I guess I'll finally be able to use Crossfire again in a game......pretty weak AMD, no CF in Dead Island or Rage.....

Since I am forced back to 11.9 w/ cap 3 since the preview drivers keep crashing on Eyefinity, I wonder how much performance I will be losing for BF3 versus 11.10 V3.

Yeah but there's still no SLI in Rage either, so I'm not blaming AMD for that one. The Dead Island issue is very disappointing, that is bad to be fair.

Man, what happened to that gargantuan Tri-SLi system you had?
But, I don't know why your system crashes, mine is fine.....but I don't think V3 is so hot....we'll see.

I'm not sure what to make of the Rage situation....as I said, I finished the game and was just comparing driver versions while treading water waiting for BF3 and Batman. V3 just isn't as good on my computer. I may go back to V2 and use the CAP3.:p

So if the 11.10 official drivers are coming out on the 31st, which driver is the one to have for BF3? I currently have 11.10 preview (1). Cause i didnt get rage i didnt need to update to preview (2). Now theres a 3rd CAPS for 11.9, and a preview (3) 11.10....so which do i want for BF3?

All CAPs are at this stage, as 11.10 hasn't officially been released.

Are you recommending 11.10 preview 2 with CAPs 3 cause you think they are the best? Cause wouldnt the newest be 11.10 preview 3 with CAPs 3? And is it safe to put CAPs on a preview that it isnt meant for?

I'm confused. What exactly is CAPS? I download the 11.10 drivers that's it. What is CAPS?

They are like small additions/fixes. So a final driver comes out (lets say 11.10) on Oct 31st. A week or 2 later a CAP comes out, it provides addition improvements to games etc, you install them one at a time though. So if you have CAP's 1 installed and 2 comes out, you uninstall 1 and install 2. You dont stack them.

Me too, well hopefully we get it on the 31st, I know they said they were working on some fixes.

Twitter by CatalystCreator:

Single AMD GPU just needs 11.10 V3 preview, but if you're running CF, then grab 11.9 CAP 3 as well.

That was regarding BF3.

Thank you. If i install 11.10 V3, will it uninstall V1 during the install process? Just double checking. I know in the directions it says all newer drivers installed will uninstall old drivers but i havent deal with going from a preview to another preview before.

No you need to uninstall V1 via uninstall manager.

I do the same thing EVERYTIME I change AMD drivers:

uninstall manager via control panel in W7
reboot to safe mode and run drivercleaner
reboot and install new drivers
reboot and install new CAP if necessary

:D

Remember a preview is merely a beta driver, a complete driver set with a few tweaks or additions, so it's just a full feagured as a WHQL release.

Catalyst Application Profiles

These are game profiles that tell the drivers what to do or how to run a particular game.
generally they are in place for games or fixes that come out between monthly Catalyst WHQL driver releases, with the intention that AMD can give you a driver for a game that might come out mid month and not otherwise work with that month's driver or past drivers.

Each WHQL release INCLUDES PAST CAPs.

The CAP is primarily Crossfire profiles, but according to AMD can improve single card performance in a game as well.

Don't they have access to the BF3 retail? Nvidia had access

As big as this game is, they've had access to it throughout development just like Nvidia. Dice has com out on the record saying that they've been working with bot h of the IHVs as close as possible, even if they haven't listened(AMD's lack of multi-threaded rendering is still a head scratcher).
