So the GDDR5 doesn't help the 4870 at all ... why did they use it then? It has to be at least part of the reason the 4870 is faster than the 4850.
The design teams will know what to optimise for and the products will be limited by the designs.
for example, if your design team is told they can have DDR5 they will optimise for higher memory bandwidth.
NVidia will have optimised for GDDR3 and ATI 's 4870 is optimised for GDDR5.
Its not sensible to suggest that NVidia will benefit as much as ATI's designs from using GDDR5 when their hardware isnt designed to make best use of it.
