Alienware m11x

My main concern with this computer is playing at lower resolutions. I am a competitive Counter-Strike Source player and I play at 640x480. I know at that low of a resolution, the hardware is limited by the CPU. So I am hoping the 1.3/1.6~ C2D will do. Maybe once one of you guys on this forum would be nice enough to benchmark it when you get yours?

this laptop most definitely will play source with flying colors... don't need intensive machine to run source. they state that it can run modern warefare 2 on full with this laptop.. so what does that say about source? 1+1=2

Considering Source-engine games ran fine on 4-year old hardware... (single core A64s w/GF 6800s, etc.) I doubt you'd have cause for concern. You could always take your current proc and down-clock it to 1.7GHz and it'd simulate the speed at which this laptop's CULV processor runs tho. :p 'Course it'd be harder to simulate the GPU unless you have an older video card from last gen lying around (I'm not sure what the desktop equivalent for the GT 335M would be... a 9800 GT? better?).

The problem with Source is it is pretty much 80%~ processor dependent. My computer now only gets like 100-180FPS at 640x480.

Intel Q9400
Nvidia 9800GS
4GB Ram

The only problem is I need 100+ FPS for it to be a good machine. The best registration for servers is to match the tickrate, which is 100. So if this little machine can achieve 100+FPS at any resolution with my FPS config, then I will have no problem shelling out the cash.

For retrospect, I can't under clock my CPU because I have an HP Firebird. However, with my Q9400, 9800GS, and 4GB or memory I get anywhere from 100-180~FPS at 640x480 with high settings. If I use my FPS config, I get anywhere from 200-400FPS. Source also only utilizes one core, so I would get a massive improvement with the 1.6~Ghz overclock.

I will more than likely end up buying this laptop, I am pretty confident that I can get 100FPS. I used to use my parents computer, which has an E2100, 9400GT, 1GB Ram and I achieved around 100FPS with my FPS config.

Also, now that CSP (Counter-Strike ProMod) is moving forward, it will be a little easier to get better FPS than with Source.

So many people were hating on this thing from the start. Yeah it might cost 1000$ to have one properly equipped, but its a tiny netbook that has the gameability of a larger, cheaper one.

I think it sounds like an amazingly awesome tiny laptop at a price point that I would fully expect, maybe even a little cheaper.

This thing is a WINNER..

and I think both processors OC, so if your really do not need the VT, then you could just stick with the original processor and save 100 bucks on the upgrade. It will still overclock to 1.73.

I love everything about this computer sans the design. If Dell would stick this in a design I could bring to work, id buy it in a heartbeat.

To address CPU concerns, it runs Empire total war on medium @ 1280x720 no overclock running at 1.3ghz.

I'm really thinking about selling my black MacBook and picking one of these up.

I'm thinking about selling my MBP and buying it.
Wanting to switch to Win7 and this may be the way I do it.
Need something tiny for grad school.

Lol I just did the same thing :)

I'm selling my 13" MacBok for one of these.

Is the CPU upgrade worth $100? According to CPU Benchmark the SU7300 is only a slight upgrade from the SU4100.

Thinking of buying one but don't want to wait until March. An eBay seller offers this laptop shipped within 15 days but the price is $1,050 with the same specs as Xaijin's.... umm...

Can't wait to get one of these. Hell, the price is low enough and the battery life is long enough that I might be able to convince work to buy one.

I don't think so, take a look at Anand's recent article on CULV procs (he discusses the differences between the various CULV models).

Considering buying this to take to work on night shift. my Hateway FX is wee heavy and the GF been using it to install lot of bs stuff lately. Got mine config atm for 2G's =/. SSD probally did it.

C2D Su7300
3year warranty
4gig ram
256SSD
ext CD/DVD rom
WNDR3700 Wireless - N router
Razer mamba mouse *its 9bucks cheaper on here than newegg...

When I try the EPP it limits the configuration, so it ends up being more expensive.

When I go to the regular site and configure it like this:
C2D SU7300 +$100
4GB Ram +$50
1 YR Warranty
default Harddrive (I'd rather upgrade it myself)
= $950

EPP is something like
C2D SU7300
4GB Ram
1 YR Warranty
500GB HD
= ~$1188 - $119 = $1,069

How do I get the other EPP discounts?

Cosmic black
win 7 home
C2D Su7300
4GB 800MHz ram
320GB 7200RPM HDD
3 year basic plan warranty.
Total : $1,223.00

now if i can find a discount for spending over a grand and save some more money i'll order it right away.

yea i thought the same plus the price tag sky rocketed with it, so change it to a simple 320gb hdd. going to wait few weeks before i make purchase till i can find a discount coupon

omg you're spending 2 g's on that?

you're insane bro lol

The new vaio z looks like it will blow it out of the water. It has a weaker gpu, but the cpu more than makes up for it. Could get one for 2g's, and comes standard with ssd.

I literally just opened mine a few minutes ago. It's definitely not an ugly laptop. The pictures online don't do it justice. It was a little hard taking pictures of it.. but here ya go for reference. I still have it charging so haven't loaded up my steam games yet. I plan on formatting it and dual booting ubuntu and windows 7.

Hey you mind if I link those pictures to notebookreviewforums? They literally get a hard on for any pictures they can get their hands on.

Also any problems with the 1.73 OC? Some people are reporting crashes with it on.

that's cool.. if it bogs my server down.. I may change the links so if you could update your post on notebookreview if that happens that would be great. I can take better pics if they want some more.. I can use one of my other cameras.
I haven't OC'd yet.. about to format it in a bit.

I just linked the single post. Keep us up to date.

People are literally thinking the world just blew up when one person said "it's not stable with OC on" over at the notebookreviewforums.

Mine is scheduled to be shipped March 3rd, thanks for the beautiful pictures, they are the best ones I've seen yet.

here's without any flash to try and get the keyboard. just cranked the aperature.

Anyone know of any coupons for Dell laptops right now? Even with the epp discount I'm still looking at 1.3k. :(

Going to call and cancel mine tommorow, turns out a huge disappointment for me :/ It's gonna cost more but i'd rather have the Sony Z. 7500-8000ish or better 3dmark06 scores vs 6100ish for the 11x overclocked and this was the real dealbreaker PCMark Vantage for the Z is 10,000ish where as the 11x only scores 2800ish.

I don't think the 11x is terrible but I do think it's a case of you get what you pay for and with the 11x you are paying for a very large netbook that can play games whereas with the Z you are paying for a full package computer that does everything and configured with SSD's the prices are really not that much different.

The 3dMark scores are heavily influenced by CPU performance and so the Z will look a lot better, but actual in game performance will favor the M11X

And I don't think anyone should get this computer if they want to do heavy CPU intense stuff... this is meant as a gaming ultraportable, and compared to the Acer 1410 or 1810 or the Asus UL80's, this is damn well priced
