Alice: Madness Returns

Alice is now showing up on Steam for those of you interested.

I was just coming here to post this. I almost sold my soul to Satan and bought the game off EA's stupid Origin service. Glad I waited. I'm also glad I cancelled my Duke pre-order on Steam. Now I can use those funds to buy Alice (which looks like it will be 100 times better game than Duke Nukem).

Damn I was waiting for this, but didn't see any news of it whatsoever. I caved a few days ago and ordered it off Amazon (PC copy). It came in today and the key doesn't work for Steam... go figure.. ugh.. stupid EA.

Looks great. Can't afford it atm but sure will get it when I can.

Thankful Steam got it. Too much $$ lost if they didn't put it on Steam is my guess.

Sigh looks like EA tries to reclaim their possition of biggest assholes in industry which Activision took from them.

all i hear is good things but yet most reviews say its like a 6.5. I'm confused!!! It looks wonferful!

Some of those reviewers don't know wtf they're talking about.

And all I gotta say is that the retail packaging for Alice: Madness is total CRAP. It came in a cheap ass flimsy dvd case, and no manual, just a two page slip with a cd key.

Least they could've put in is a black and white manual with a few pictures in it.. ugh.

Played through the first couple sections of the first level set tonight.

The game is STUNNING. The screenshots allready look pretty good, but they don't do the game full justice. In motion it just looks amazing with the PhysX effects on 'High'. From the way the hair moves, to the random particle effects.. It just looks really really good. The graphics are similar to Batman:AA. You can't appreciate it until you see the game in motion, and I must say, there is A LOT more stuff going on in this game compared to Batman:AA particle effects wise.

Enough with the graphics though. The gameplay itself has totally sucked me in. The combat is far better then Alice 1, and i'd equate it to Batman:AA/Zeno Clash in the fact that you can 'lock on' to certain enemies and there is 'real' combat involved. You don't just mindlessly shoot stuff, you have to dodge, attack at the right moments, and use the various weapons to keep the enemies at bay. The game is just as violent and gory as the first one. Sliced up enemies randomly loose limbs. Blood everywhere. Random bits, pools, and all sorts of doo-dads fly around during the combat portions with PhysX on high.

The level design is just as outstanding as the first game. I can't really say much more. Combined with the outstanding art direction and graphics.. Yeah. Outstanding.

I've heard the game is somewhere in the realm of 16 hours long. Thats pretty darn good length for a game like this if you ask me. Even more so when you consider the replay value of finding all the different hidden items throughout the game, and the initial wow factor of the outstanding design.

I really can't see how this game could be rated any lower then an 8. I'd personally rate it in the 85-90% range. For any game to get above a 90% requires something like HL2, or world in conflict. I seriously question rating this game anything lower then an 8/10. You'd be fucking insane to do so. The level/art direction alone propels this game high above the rest.

Some random screenshots from the very first portions of the game -

My now fairly ancient E8400/GTX470 system handles the game quite well with maxed out settings. On an off-topic note i've never had a system last as long. Three years later with nothing but a GPU upgrade and it is still running the latest games maxed out no problem. The game supports nvidia 3d vision or whatever it is called, and it is probably the first game i've played where I actually would love to see it with the 3D Vision. It would be a trip.

Stop tempting me you bastards. I really want to get a Nvidia card and run hacked PhysX drivers just for this game since I've been reading it causes problems since you can't disable PhysX for some retarded reason. :(

I remember when having a physical copy of a game was worth it. The Witcher 2 is the only physical game I've purchased in a long time because the goodies you get is worth it.

Ive got about 2 hours in and still on level 1..This game so far is a solid 8..Dont believe the reviews bashing it because it doesnt have a number in the title(although it is a sequel)..Breath of fresh air and a must play if you like platformers!

Does this game have saves you can give to another person? I am going to be making a PhysX comparison video and was wondering if anyone that has played through could give me some of their saves.

Don't really need a save. Just have the person play about 20-30 minutes up to the part where you encounter these like tea-cup hat wearing dudes for the first time. (The ones that controlled that robot in the first game) Hell, even when you jump in the game there are a bunch of particles that have physics attached to them.

I've never really thought PhysX was worth anything (Including in Batman:AA) but this game really looks a lot better with it. It's like the equivelant to the first Alice game and the particle effects present in it. Imagine playing through it without any of the cool particle effects that really made that game shine. Do the same with this game and you basically have the same gap.

Thanks for your review sir. I feel good about my $50 purchase. I haven't paid $50 for a game in a long time, so Alice was kind of a gamble for me. Your review set my mind at ease. I hope to play a bit after waking tomorrow (later today)

I had to pay $57 due to being stationed overseas and having to buy the game on shitty origin. Didn't know it was going to be released on steam. Even so, I still feel it was worth the money. Not to mention it came with a copy of Alice 1.

I would have bought the game off Origin when they were offering the original for free. I missed it though, because I was too busy paying attention to the Duke Nukem debacle and trying to get Steam to refund my Duke Pre-order :p. I have a physical copy of the first Alice game already, but would have liked to get in on the digital version for free. Maybe Steam will get it eventually and people will be able to pick up the original for $5 or $10.

Theres a noCD fix for the original. Just rip the ISO and store on HDD or dropbox etc. and it's pretty much the same. It's not like you're stealing the game, and you are allowed to keep backups of media :D It's what I use.

Man this game was awsome even my GF who's not a gamer can't stop watching me play. She was saying how beautiful the game was. The way she float and how the camera angle change to suit the fall was amazing. Physx really make the game more enjoyable. There is no doubt about that. They really did a great job on this one.

And again I really need to vent this;

The mainstream gaming media should ashamed of themselves for giving this game such poor reviews. If Black Ops gets a 90%, Crysis 2 gets 90% (Both of which were games I enjoyed, but were no where near 90%) then this game diserves equal. I cannot possibly fathom how one could rate this game below an 8/10.

Reading some of these 'professional' reviews really makes me question if they are even playing the same game.

"Unrefined Combat" .. Huh? NO.

"Feels Dated" ... WHAT?!

Did they load up Alice 1 and review it instead?

No, they suffer from the same thing that movie reviewers suffer from - which is why I generally don't listen to movie reviewers either. In becoming a "reviewer", they become so focused on evaluating everything - paying close attention to the graphics, trying to grade the gameplay, platforming, puzzles, etc. on some artificial numeric scale - that they've lost the ability to just sit back and ENJOY a game. Like their movie counterparts - I've watched many "bad" movies that I've REALLY enjoyed and have recommended to friends because they accomplished exactly what they set out to - they ENTERTAINED me and made me FORGET about RL stuff for a few hours. If I'm not checking my watch in the theater, or if I've "lost track of the time" playing a game, then it's worked - it's good. Professional reviewers have lost that in the details, and it's really sad.

Pretty eye catching disparity here in this thread from a lot of you playing this vs what I'm seeing abroad, especially from the review outlets.

I've warmed up to the idea of getting this game sooner rather than later largely thanks to the feedback in this thread.

There are no mainstream gaming journalists imho. Only paid marketers. Pay get an 8 out of 10 or higher, don't pay, get less than a 7 regardless of how good or bad the game is. Not even sure some reviewers play the games they "review". I sometimes think they base the entirety of their "reviews" off of screenshots and trailers.

It's good that it is back on Steam. I have no intention of ever using Origin. Not because I think Origin is bad or wrong or I have a hard on for Steam. Steam and GFWL is simply as much as I am willing to put up with. And they beat Origin to the party. Some days, GFWL can go suck big donkey as well. I am not going to have a half dozen different clients on my PC.
