Alice: Madness Returns

Sorry for derailing it a bit about the PhysX.

CAn anyone confirm if the retail version (IE at a brick/mortar store) uses Origin to install or what?

Requires a one time activation from Origin. Which doesn't require Installing Origin. Origin is also not required to run the game like Steam games. I honestly don't know why people bitch about Origin.

They PAY developers to use physX in their games. Of course they say they don't pay them to use it, rather Nvidia' pays for "business relations."

Nvidia DOES gimp it on the CPU:
http://www.realworldtech.com/page.cfm?ArticleID=RWT070510142143

The bare point is that It's a way for Nvidia to try and get more cards sold, they don't want people with ATI using it even WITH an nvidia card (Whcih you could do, til Nvidia blocked it and cuts it out if it detects an ATI card in your system), then they gimp the CPU version so it runs like ass, basically either forcing you to turn it off to play the game or to switch to an nvidia card to get actual decent frames.

oh you mean that biased and misinformed and outdated article that butthurt ati users keep passing around among themselves, and anyone else who doesn't know what they're looking at, where the author cites a bunch of source code that he never bothered to recompile. you know some such other stupid argument was started in the alice forum on steam, where people will also try and explain this concept to those who are not capable of understanding the subject. I'll link to that instead of continuing to crap on this thread, there you can find more info and real sources.

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1936414&page=3

just think about the economics of paying devs to use your code, instead of the other way around. you really think nvidia would sell enough cards to recoup and profit on this expense? what is the payment structure here? wads of cash exchanged in a back alley, for each and every game that uses physx? or could there possibly be some mutually beneficial advantage, to using well established and maintained code free of charge.

You seem to be taking this discussion personally. Keep these clearly biased posts about video card companies to the vid card section, since I no longer read that because of the bias.

Anyways, game looks really cool. Is the combat as fun as it looks?

I find the game really fun although some of the jumps are more tricky than I care for. The artwork in this game is amazing.

Completed it in 13.5 hours. Great game, I'd say it should have gotten 8's from the critics. There are some occasional frustrating issues with the combat/camera, overly tight timing of a couple platform puzzles and mediocre pacing due to the length of the chapters - but overall the good far outweighed the bad.

This title is now the best example for demonstrating physx, the physx particle effects in some areas are quite awesome even on medium - however I dislike and hate that it is a proprietary technology which nVidia bribes devs/publishers to use. Game devs should use tech which is available to everyone regardless of their platform but I can see how it can be not their decision.

The art design is amazing, very few high end titles can be so artistically expressive due to publishers not wanting to take risks. The art design is the strongest attribute of this game, but some of that credit needs to go to American McGee as the first Alice heavily influenced this one. Pity EA didn't put more marketing muscle behind this game, it's the sort of breath of fresh air that many games would welcome but they never will hear of the game at all.

Those camera problems exist in like every game. Even Zelda OoT had it which is probably the highest rated game ever.

I'm playing the first Alice now (never finished it when it came out). Anyone else find all weapons except the electricity/ball staff useless?

Knife is only good for throwing when out of mana because after you swing it, you can't swing for another second or two, plus you have to be in melee range
Cards do almost no damage yet take the most mana of any weapon to use. It takes at least 70% mana to kill someone with them
Staff usually kills in 2-3 hits of shooting the ball and takes very little mana
Dice gargoyles or whatever die too quick and don't seem to do much of any damage at all
Jack in the box is OK but very few chances to use it because there's VERY rarely more than 2-3 enemies on screen at a time and they're never bunched together to warranty its use
Ice wand is pretty good but takes a lot of mana, which can be compensated if you take the pick ups from dead enemies but they don't always drop them so you might be out of mana

Those are all the weapons I got so far. Haven't played with each long enough because the staff feels so OP but I did experiment a bit to try to see if certain enemies might be more vulnerable to certain weapons than others but that didn't see to be the case

got the game last night and put it on my mahcine and then found out about all the graphical problems lol (low FPS due to cap and vsync, problems with eyefinity setups etc).

I didn't dare try to turn physx up but would love to try it out. I know on Batman AA, I liked they physx and it added to the enviroment of the game quite a bit. But in this system I have 2x 6970s so can;t do the GPU accelerated PhysX stuff :( just wondering if it will bring my framerate down ridiculously like it did Batman (cpu is 2600k @ 4.8GHz)

so far really enjoying it! just wish eyefinity was fully supported.

Hopefully they patch Vsync option in the options. But you can disable it in the AliceEngine.ini

The jacks are the best weapon taking into account power usage...I forget where you get them, it's been a while since I've beat the game.

Since I was at my fiance's last night I got to spend some time with a PC I brought over there to use as a HTPC / Gaming rig, and installed Alice on it.

The first system I had set it up on was my desktop at home:
Coolermaster HAF 922
MSI P67A-GD65
i7-2600k @ 4.8GHz
Noctua NH-D14
8GB corsair vengance
2x ATI 6970 in crossfire
3x OCZ Vertex 120GB in RAID 0
1x WD Black 1TB for storage
LG Blu-ray Writer
Windows 7 Enterprise
3x Acer 23" Monitors
Pioneer SA-3000 stereo amp
JBL 2500 bookshelf speakers
Logitech G110 Keyboard
Razer DeathAdder mouse

Alice settings 1920x1080 everything to high with exception of physX set to low

On this system playing alice fresh install ran like crap, had to play around with settings in the ini, and then it was somewhat ok. I still have framerate issues I feel, seems liek it still does not run smooth. Even though others have posted pics of eyefinity and I tried many different settings I still can not get it to work in eyefinity.

Ok so the HTPC at my fiance's

Silverstone GD04
Gigabyte 880GM-UDH2
Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
8 GB Corsair
NVIDIA GTX 470
2x WD Black 1TB (seperate one for OS one for TV and storage)
Lite on DVD-R
hoooked to my Philips 52" 1080p 120Hz set

on this system, out of the box install 1920x1080 all settings to high and physX to high THE GAME RUNS SMOOTH AS SILK, even without messing with the ini. Not stuttering or dropped frames or hitching or whatever you would like to call it. Just nice smooth consistent framerate. This was playing through right up to where I have to start looking for the Hatters parts.

I cant believe my lowerspeced HTPC seems to blow away my higher end desktop computer in this game!!! I might use fraps to see if I can record some sort of framerate chart on both systems. and BTW I love physX in this game! for those who argue against it, you just havent played with a system capable. it does add to the game, it's all the little details that come together to form the full experience. (not that I am trying to rehash the PhysX and NVIDIA are EVIL debate, because I am all for someone writing a physx emulator to run on my Radeon cards lmao)

Do you have same issues if you disable crossfire and eyefinity ?

My bet would be on shitty crossfire drivers.

Disabled eyefinity but not corssfire yet, will be back at my house tonight since I have my kids and will play around then. Also going to turn physx to high to see how bad it hits performance wise lol

My best friend gifted me this game on Steam last night. How awesome is that?

Glad to hear it is running so well on your 470. I can't wait to try it this afternoon with my new 570. I really missed PhysX when I had my 5850!

Awesome game and a breath of fresh air with creativity..Hopefully the PC community supports this one with well deserved sales..Let devs know its time for something different..The original Alice was a hit on PC,hopefully this will be also.

I spent about an hour playing this afternoon. My impression so far is a resounding 'fuck yeah'. I made some ini changes, but one thing is still bothering me. I turned off mouse smoothing in the aliceinput ini file. It still feels floaty in game. Did I miss something?

Hayden over at widescreen gaming forums made a tool to enable surround and the ability to modify fov. http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=23645&start=30

Works great for me.

Hi guys! I too picked up Alice, and was wondering did anyone or EA fix the umbrella bug? I cannot pass the next level without it. I tried mucking with my ini file to no avail.. If anyone has any help please PM me or post here... Thanks!;)

Use a x360 pad.
- Target mode (LT)
- Press A when a projectile is near you
- ???
- Profit. :D

If unsuccessful esc-restart- :)

Just got the game today and I'm loving it so far, best Art style in a game in a loooooong time imo. Going from the drag mostly gray/brown city to the bursting with colours vibrant wonderland is great.

I got it on the pc to muck about with all the DLC dresses, etc. Any thoughts on the one sto use?

I like the rabbit dress, but it seems like some o fthem could unbalance the game eaisily with the double weapon dmg, not losing health (teeth instead), etc.

Not a chance, unless you use it at the end, when all the weapons are already upgraded.
Keep in mind also that one hit takes from 30 (normal enemy) to 300 (last boss) teeth, so they will end pretty fast. :D

incredible game but I have the same binding issue as you.

let me know if this works for you as I have not tried this. from EA forums:

To fix umbrella glitch and use it in Alice: Madness Returns, you shoud do as following steps:
fix Alice: Madness Returns umbrella glitch step 1 to 3 :
1--Go into your default config file found by
Program files -> Origin Games -> Alice Madness Returns - The Complete Collection -> Game -> Alice2 -> AliceGame -> Config -> Default Input

2 : Find the line that says
+Bindings=(Name="E",Command="TriggerBlock true | OnRelease TriggerBlock false"
and change the E to whichever letter you want to be block; in my case I wanted G to be block so I changed it to: +Bindings=+Bindings=(Name="G",Command="TriggerBlock true | OnRelease TriggerBlock false"

3 : Save your changes and close out of the config file

fix Alice: Madness Returns umbrella glitch step 4 to 6 :

4 : Start Alice: Madness Returns game; go to the configure controls option in game; reset controls to default

5 : Since default for block is now the key you assigned in the config the default controls will reflect it

6 :you can now change the remaining controls to your preference

I am considering this game but I have 2 questions. First will my rig run Alice OK? I can live without everything maxed....

Intel Q9550| ASUS-P5K
4 GB-DDR2 800-Crucial BallistixTracerRed
|XFX HD-5850-XXX Edition|
CREATIVE X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS

Second, are the PC controls OK? I don't want to get a pad and I am a bit anal about control in games.

1. Yes, if you keep the PhysX on low and overclock your cpu a little bit.
2. They are acceptable, but I warmly suggest you to get a pad. This is a platform game, so it's specifically built to be played with a pad.

kache, thanks! Considering the controls, I think I'll pass....

mkb works great, as long as you get rid of mouse smoothing, acceleration, dead zone, axis rates, vsync, etc. just more of the same fucking around with engine configs, like any other halfassed ue3 port.

Is it just me or is Alice an absolute fox? I think I have my first videogame crush.

Just bought it, is downloading.

Hoping being UE based this game is in some ways moddable. I've seen a few dress texture mods already.

Can you post some info on what all you tweaked? I turned off mouse smoothing and acceleration but it's still a little floaty.

Yes, and the mod is easily installed, by simply dropping the dress in the Character folder. :D
