Long story short.. I'm surprise up upgrading my kid's Minecraft setup, which now has a old Nvidia 660ti.

I have a chance to locally purchase a EVGA 980ti for $250.

This is a pretty good deal, correct?

From a few searches I've done I see the 980ti is better than the 1060, RX 580 and when overclocked it's better than the 1070 in some cases.

Input on this?.. Thx in advance!

That's a damned fine deal, do it.
It's pretty much a more power hungry 1070 (kinda).

You could get used 1070s for close to this quite some time back,
but the miners ruined things for everyone.

Not complaining though as I got a nearly free upgrade from a pair of R9 390Xs
to a pair for 1080s. Perfect timing before the mining craze started to spread to
nVIDIA cards :)

I could find 980tis for ~$300 when I was looking a week or so ago. I would say $250 is a good deal but not so amazing you have to rush out the door.

A 980ti is close to a 1070 is most cases.

That said if this is just for minecraft and other kids games a 660ti is plenty. Seems like a waste of money to me.

The shader packs and mods has really started taxing the frame rate from the what I've seen

Wow, that's crazy. I guess i have been away from minecraft for a longtime tho lol

1070 performance for $250 is hard to beat if you really think he needs the power.

^ Yup, that's exactly the way I see it.
No way you're getting 1070 performance for anywhere close to $250 otherwise thanks to miners.

Oddly enough, I just helped a colleague's son pickup a used 980Ti for $240, and a 1kW "new" (unused but older model) PSU for $25 this evening.
He was ecstatic :)

damn miners, making folks pick prev gen top tier cards that perform in the ballpark of top tier current gen cards for half the price. Cheeky bastards, those miners.

You can thank us later.

;)

Indeed.

Right now 980 Ti's are a better deal pound for pound than 1070's. Overclocked some beat 1080's. 980 Ti's are more power hungry as another mentioned, but I believe they're a better deal currently.

I've been having trouble with my 980 Ti lately and am a bit bummed I'm going to have to likely give it up for a 1080. But, tis' what it is. I've been thinking about moving to more of a workstation based system anyways

Before you jump on it, make sure you have a good enough power supply, I'd say 650W or above. As said they are more power hungry so best to have a PSU that can keep up.

The 980 Ti is still a great card. I can max or near max (just dropping AA to FXAA/SMAA) most new games still at 1440p and get good framerates.

Got one for $200 back in March. If you tried to sell one on here, you'd try to list it at 325 and most would lowball you at 200-250.

Great buy at $250 and will easily handle Minecraft with every mod you care to roll into it. I used to run two of them waterblocked and massively overclocked and they'd run pretty close to the 1080 SLI crowd as to performance levels. Other than being a bit more power hungry, a 980ti is easily the equivalent of a 1070 as to performance.

Stock it's close to a 1070, overclocked it can compete with a 1080. Go for it for sure.
No no no no. No way its close to a GTX1080 not even on LN2.

Its close to a GTX1070 at stock, more so in DX11 games. In DX12 and vulkan games the 1070 takes the lead, but not by much.

????

No no no no.

If it's close to a 1070 at stock how is it not close to a 1080 when it's overclocked? The 1080 is ~15-20% faster than the 1070. The 980ti is overclocks VERY well.

It competes very well with the 1080 gaming x...which is an overclocked 1080....

gg no re.

Well overclocked, a 980Ti can pretty much match and sometimes even beat a 1080 @ stock speeds. Been there, done that:

I think it's a decent deal, but I generally like to go with newer tech and lower power consumption, if you pay the power bill is always a determining factor. I also have noticed the top video cards of their time tend to die quicker than the mid range models. Some food for thought.

The 1080 can overclock too.

Who said it couldn't!?

The point being made was that an overclocked 980Ti can perform close to that of a 1080 @ stock. Was just refuting this "No no no no no" nonsense is all. :D

And granted there are advantaged with going for later gen GPU tech for less heat/noise/etc.... but a new 1080 starts at around $540, so the 980Ti at $250 isnt's that bad of a deal if you don't want to spend so much. It's pretty much equivalent to a GTX 1070.

Here, let me help you ask this question the correct way.

"Should I buy a GTX 1070 for for $250?" Answer, hell fcking yes.

980 ti is a killer card even for today's games.

I keep buying 980 ti's any chance I get. I just bought a pair for $250 to add to the other 2 I already have.

As soon as the new nVidia card is announced with availability being within 90 days if that's possible. I'm selling my 1080 ti for the best money I can get and dropping in a 980 ti for a few months,

????

No no no no.

While not inaccurate this is always kind of a silly argument.... Yes, a 980ti performs on par with a 1070. Yes, an overclocked 1070 performs on par with a 1080. Yep, overclocked 980ti also performs on par with a 1080. At the end of the day you're still just saying a 980ti performs on par with a 1070 lol.

One could argue a max overclocked 1080 out performs both. So while peak 980ti and 1070 performance can reach normal 1080 levels they wont likely match peak 1080 level making them not similar in performance to a 1080.

As per usual it's all in how you spin the data lol.

^^^^ Ummm, you seem to be entirely missing the real point of what's being discussed here. It's not an epeen contest, it's one of value. Which is to say, you can purchase a GTX 1070 equivalent for $250. Point us towards a GTX 1070 for that price and you may have a point as well.

It's not a silly argument at all. One of the merits of overclocking is being able to hit the performance of higher tier products, at least that has always been the goal for me.

when you get the 1080, i might trade you a 980 ti, I have 2 and a friend has 1

Umm, No I'm not. I already posted that exact point 2 days before you joined the thread.......

Good job on actually missing the point of my last post tho. :ROFLMAO:

It is a silly argument because the fact that an overclocked 1070 and an overclocked 980ti perform on par with a stock 1080 is still just saying the 1070 and 980ti are comparable while adding a whole lot more words lol. I'm just pointing out Stoly wasn't as far off base as you believe if you just try to understand what he's trying to say.

1/2 the members of this forum are so defensive and closed minded. I'm sorry for whatever happened in your lives to make you guys this way.

Pretty far off and defensive. Not even sure what you're trying to argue at this point.

The link takes you to post #5 in this thread which is....

Great considering several are listing their reference 980tis for 350 on this very board.
