A friend's EYEFINITY 9 setup

lol that was sweet. i think you should get three more monitors and do a 12x1 setup. then title the thread "my set up kicks your A** and you should just give up on the computer building thing cause i win" and see how many people you can upset.

even more awesome would be 3x3 playing supreme commander 2. feel like your a frekin general.

LOL or he could just line up all 12 vertically and make a thread: "my 1x12 eyefinity setup, because fuck you"

Nice setup. I think it will be useful in many ways except for gaming(unless they release bezelless monitors)

Say... at what point can you just stop adding monitors? IIRC, adding eyefinity widens the camera FOV to accommodate the extra viewing angle, but you can't go beyond 180 degrees, so what's going to happen at beyond 180? Nothing?

Its never ending as long as they are willing to keep going there will be a dev somewhere willing to accommodate. Would be cool to have a game be totally 360 degrees.

That, and I can think of a lot of uses for 9+ monitors.

Stock market. Doctor (full body x-ray/CAT scan spanning all monitors), coding, photoshop, 3D Max, etcetc... Sounds incredibly useful. Those who bashed on this are thinking too narrow -- you see the game and say ohno, that's not good. That's not the point.

9+ monitors? Yes. 9x1 configuration? No.

softTH can operate max 3 monitors (virtually) = 3 monitor groups so for run 12 monitors I will need 3x HD5870 e6 and only one (each can operate 4 monitor group in landscape or portrait)

anyway one more thing

7 monitors 7350x1680 - high detail 25-30fps
9 monitors and (lower resolution) - scaled - 7200x1280 - 7200x1280 - low detail - 17-18fps

I know SoftTH kills a performance of cards but dunno why on more monitors even with lower res i have worse performance, maybe pci-e bandwitch or sth going bad in drivers

thanks again

I don't afraid about critical words but constructive critics will be better than "hate critics" ;)

People do impractical stuff all the time just for kicks.

Like overclock their expensive watercooled system to the max just to get an extra 2% of performance. I thought HOCP was a place where it was expected that people would do the expensive and impractical just for kicks.

If you don't like it, fine. Just why all the hate?

Could pick up a used impreza for that kinda cash. And have better framerates :)

And you're right, we do. But this really should be a 3x3 setup.

I think the whole on the floor + crap framerates does it in for me.

Mint, in a gen or so that would be very playable too, although I wonder if monitors or space will ever become cheap enough for me to afford even 3 screens.

find me pls impreza for 1000-1200eur :D I WANT lol :D

anyway, as someone says before, this is concept, I just tweaked system a little and got 30 fps @ medium details in max resolution so better mobo, ram, cpu + overclocked gpu and you got a 2x better performace than me

some boring day today so I made 3x3 system

I don't think I would use it, but the geek in me is in love. It looks very cool for something "just to do".

This is a cool setup and very neat to know how SoftTH works. If you and mrnoob don't like it, don't post.

I wouldn't mind trying this out though, b/c that setup is really neat!

+1 to the OP!

The issue is games are rendered as assuming one fixed point camera. In order to do a 360 degree setup or technically anyone where the monitors arn't perfectly flat would require changing the way the game is rendered to have each screen be rendered by a camera pointed at a slightly different angle.

I love that 3x3 setup you got there. If you do bezel management (in CCC) for the top middle and bottom right screens, it would look absolutely perfect.

good for a day or two, but for everyday gaming I don't think it is practical. I am not here to thread crap but I think anything over three monitors is just waste because you have to literally scale down all the settings to get playable framerates when you go higher. Nice video though it looked like a one day project rather then a 24/7 setup.

BEZELS OVERWHELMING!

Just kidding (mostly...). It is neat to see that crazy of a setup actually work though. Neat stuff to see, though Bezelfinity is not for me. Any videos of other games on it?

I want to see a 360 degree setup where i could look behind me and see the cars / enemies, that would be amazing.

http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/02-products/product-how-TrackIR-works.html

I'd like to know how TrackIR's 6DOF would work with that though. Just have yaw turned off?

And yes the TrackIR's still useful for sims in that config if you need to look up/down at instruments or for enemies. Not certain having yaw off would allow you to see instruments as desired though.

Game devs need to start making a proper wrap around FOV. At the moment you couldn't have a wrap around set up because the majority of games assume you have a single flat display, so stretch the side screen content to accomodate a high FOV.

When game devs start doing that I might consider dropping money on a 6 wide Eyefinity set up for some crazy race/flight sim goodness. TrackIR is a nice idea, but I want to actually be able to turn my head to see my rear view mirrors and see opponent's coming up out of my peripheral vision ;)

I liked the video. If not anything else it was interesting. Pretty obvious that this was done for a few laughs, "just because I can".

Thanks for sharing!

How many times do people have to ask this useless question before they get it? A single 30" monitor doesn't let you see any more than a 22" monitor. Hell, a 16:9 20" will show you more game world than a 30".

In a landscape setup the bezels are moot. Even with them, you still see far more of the world than with a 30". Landscape Eyefinity is like wearing glasses - there are some frames, but you can still see the world. A single monitor 16:9 or 16:10 monitor (regardless of its physical size) is like wearing blinders. You don't see shit.

Chill bro. No need to flame the guy or call his setup a "turd". Its a cool concept. Practical? No. Interesting to see? Absolutely. And if you don't like it, why do you keep coming back to this thread to call it a turd? Great, you don't like it, move the fuck on. Do you have a personal vendetta against the OP or some shit? This child-like behavior of yours is pathetic.

I was surprised no one has replied to this one yet.

How is a 22" @ 1680x1050 going to show you more gaming world than a 30" @ 2560x1600? Unless you're talking about the highly unlikely case where the person using a 30" is going to intentionally limit themselves by not opening up their FOV or using the 30" at a non-native resolution.

I think some of you are little whiny brats. This was obviously done for the fun of it, and I think it was awesome. I mean - OBVIOUSLY they weren't trying to one-up everyone because, uh, the damned setup was on the floor, for fuck's sake.

Quit crying because you don't have a 9 monitor setup and just enjoy the damned concept.

He is most likely assuming they have the same resolution. I have made a similar case at my job. the monitoring center has three 22" monitors that run 1680x1050 each. One of the tech managers suggested a pair of 30" monitors that ran a ta similar resolution and tried to say they would get more screen space. I had to explain resolutions to him and actually do the math to show him pixel counts for each setup. two monitors with the same res will give you the same desktop real estate regardless of the diagonal measurement, just one has huge icons and text.

A 30" is still 16:10. FOV is based off of aspect ratio, not resolution. A higher resolution at the same AR won't show you more game world. Since proper widescreen support is generally defined as hor+, the wider the view the more you'll see. The only assumption I made is that everyone will run their display at native resolution or at least at native AR. You could run a game on the 30" at 2560x533 (gives you the same AR as 3x 16:10 landscape eyefinity), but nobody does that.

16:9 is wider than 16:10, thus in a hor+ game 16:9 will see more game world. Not much more, but more. Landscape eyefinity, on the other hand, is 48:10. You see a *lot* more than 16:10.

Also, I didn't say that a 22" 16:10 monitor will show you more game world than a 30", and it won't. It will show you the exact same amount of game world. Both will have the exact same FOV.

He is most likely assuming they have the same resolution.

Nope :)

I see the fun in trying this just for kicks.. but it's not a good usable gaming station IMO, well, unless you take over a room and get some more horse power behind it.. but just for the sake of trying it out pretty cool. but wow, that's a lot of bezels..

Fuck the practicality of it. This is [H]ardOCP, not SoftOCP. This site is about pushing boundaries which this succeeds at. It may not work 100%, but kudos to the guy for even trying it in the first place. I doubt any of the flamers here would dare try to do it in the first place. I still wouldn't use it as a day to day solution, but that's beside the point.

Honestly, I'm surprised he even got it to work. I'm impressed.

+1

I'm glad that the tech and horse power are there for this kind of thing... but I think I prefer my three 30's.

Thanks for sharing anyway.
