980 Ti

i don't care what they call it, but i do know my f5 button is gonna hate me again.

Pressing F5 is so refreshing.

IMO it would make sense to release this card sooner rather than later. AMD will most likely release their cards this summer, so it would be bad to wait after summer to release the 980TI.

If Nvidia knows what AMD is planning to do, then they can choose to release whenever they want. Sooner rather than later would work in their favor.

Not if it cuts into their higher margin Titan X. For crying out loud this $999 card is flying off the shelves everywhere and stock is still hard to find. If this magical 6GB Titan X aka 980 Ti released in 3 weeks it would pretty much put an end to Titan X sales. Why make less money when you can make more, especially when your competition won't have anything out until late June earliest?

I stubbornly refuse to believe that a *full* GM200 would drop between May 16-26, no way Jose. Cut down GM200 15% slower than Titan X (at least) and with half the vram for $700? Yeah ok maybe.

I would love to see the card have 8GB. At 6gb I would still need to get it.

My 680 is awesome, however, it just isnt able to keep up anymore. I get close to filling the 4GB frame buffer as it is.

I think a Vram wall is coming. A new process or technique. It will look awesome and eat Vram like candy.

I suspect with DX12 things will change. As always it will take a year or two. New games will come out with Uber Deluxe super high res models and/or textures.

Maybe I need to go play some more Keno. (ya right)

Why do people keep saying the card is out of stock? It hasn't once went out of stock on the Nvidia store and they have a 2 per customer limit.

It seems like retailers got a very small amount of cards and NV decided to sell most of them direct, maybe to prevent gouging on prices.

Pretty sure nVidia store had stock issues during launch week, but regardless what I said about May release of 980 Ti still stands.

Could mean AMD's new cards coming out are very competitive and NV wants to launch before then - May is a big month for them after all with Witcher 3 coming out.

I personally don't think a $699 980 Ti that is just as fast would kill sales of the Titan. A lot of people gaming at 4K+ want that extra VRAM, even if it is overklll right now.

nV doesn't need to preemptively launch anything -- remember how 780 Ti launched 2 weeks after 290X in response to AMD providing Titan level performance for almost half the price? Besides Lisa Su confirmed herself that there won't be anything coming until end of June at the very earliest.

This is how I see it: if you wanted more than 980 performance now, you have to shell out for a Titan X, whether you're actually doing 4K gaming or not. Titan X is the only card faster than 980, so you either pony up the cash, or keep waiting for something cheaper.

Now if said 980 Ti was released, it presents a cheaper and much better value proposition (I'm using the term "value" loosely here) than the Titan X, so those doing 120Hz 1080p gaming or 1440p gaming have a much better alternative. Then the only people still buying the Titan X would be those doing (surround) 4K gaming and "future proofers", and in both cases they likely would've gotten the Titan X over the 980 Ti anyway.

So by releasing the 980 Ti prematurely, nVidia would just be hurting its own margins.

Or 144Hz ...

I don't know how people can still use 60hz monitors for games. I bought one just for GTA5.

Well for 4k you're stuck at 60Hz since there are no 120/144Hz 4k displays out right now. Besides there some games out there that have a frame rate limiter to 60fps such as Assassins Creed 4, Dark Souls 2, and Metal Gear Solid 5 so a 144Hz display is practically useless for such games and you might as well play at 4k 60fps.

Well even on the desktop, 144Hz makes moving the mouse/dragging the windows around feel much smoother compared to 60Hz. 144Hz just makes all movements feel smoother period, which is why I can never go back to a 60Hz panel.

i was set on the 980 ti. but due to certain % discounts i'm comparing somewhere around $640 (based on 700ish estimated) for 980 ti vs $850 dollars for the titan x. So around 200 dollar difference. Worth getting titan X then? Also feel like titan x will hold value over time much better in case I want to sell for the next card due to the vram size.

We really know nothing about the 980 ti, it's just speculations at this point. May release is just a rumour as far as I know, I haven't read any official word.
But $850 for a Titan X is pretty good regardless, if you don't want to wait.

Titan has too much vram, 980 has not enough vram. I think it will be a Titan X with 6GB of vram $750 price point. My speculation.

$$$$<----this. ;)

Uh, no. 1440p ain't enough real estate.

If *GOOD* 4K 144hz monitors and all of the supporting high-bandwidth cabling and interfaces required to run it come out, I'll jump.

4K @ 60hz / 60FPS 4:4:4 is lovely in the meantime..

This forum sometimes... *sigh*

120+ Hz monitor: Big bucks.
GPU capable of maintaining 60-120fps: Big bucks.

Extra smoothness in GTA 5 is most certainly worth plunging myself into credit card debt.

//edit: Just realized this is the NVIDIA section. That explains the abundance of big bucks. Also inb4 "HardForum not SoftForum".

Where are you getting a Titan X for $850?

i got 20 dollar gift card for the 970 memory fiasco, 5% cashback with discover, and 10% off for new customers with tigerdirect. evga titan x is 1020 or 1030 for sc yestaurday. I went and got store credit for my other 970 with newegg so I just need to sell the current 970. since the store credit doesn't expire I'll probably buy some stuff like watercooling kit, hard drives, etc from newegg anyway.

[Corsair] Corsair Adds 980 Ti to PSU Finder

http://www.overclock.net/t/1553149/corsair-corsair-adds-980-ti-to-psu-finder

Speculation: Nvidia originally planned the 980 Ti for ~September to potentially dethrone the 390X, depending on how it placed against the Titan X, being a full GM200 with higher clocks.
But through the grapevine they have discovered the 390X is actually more disappointing than originally anticipated, somewhere below the Titan X.

So Nvidia is now releasing the 980 Ti ahead of schedule as a cut-down GM200 part to fall somewhere between the 980 and Titan X, to compete with or soundly defeat the 390X.

I am hoping for the rumored May release. If that happens I will be able to put the EVGA Step Up program to good use.

What a goddamn joke of a thread. If you actually take more than 30 seconds to scroll through the list, you'll see a couple obvious errors and omissions:

AMD:
- Missing R7 250, 260, 265; and R9 270, 280, 285
- 295X2 misnamed 290X2

nVidia:
- Missing GTX 660 Ti, Titan X
- 780 and 780 Ti have 2 entries each (listed as nVidia GeForce 780 (Ti) and then later GeForce GTX 780 (Ti)

So there's no Titan X, but there's a 980 Ti. Yeah me thinks someone just wasn't paying attention.

Isn't there an actual 290x2 card though? i do vaguely remember seeing such a card, alongside 295x2 where it is simply an OC'ed 295x2

I hope this GTX 980 TI will come with non reference coolers at launch and I'll be happy, was never a fan of reference designs because they usually run too hot and too loud.

And also, is 9GB possible on a 384 bit memory bus? Because I think 6GB isn't going to be enough at 4K.

No because that would be mismatched memory amounts. It has to be 1.5, 3, 6, 12 and so on with a 384 bit bus.

It would be 970-gate all over again. ;)

Just 6 please... Not 6+1.5 or whatever crazy math Nvidia does these days.
Regular, boring 6 GB.

I recognize those fans.
All the money in the world still doesn't teach people how to properly optimize airflow.
