Can most 8800gts's be overclocked to EVGA's superclocked or BFG branded OC speeds?
I just picked up an EVGA 8800gts 640mb 500mhz core 1600mhz mem card and would like to go at least to 575 core, 1700 mem. it seems from what I have seen that many many people have these cards running much faster, hardly anybody leaves em at stock. Please post with your experiences :)

Typically pretty darn easily :). I have mine in a modded small-form-factor case (X-Qpack) that takes ATX boards instead of the normal microATX ones, and am able to run it at 620/2000 (core/mem) stable/artifact-free (to manual examination). I've taken it higher, but heat limits me due to the constraints of my modded case. I'll be modding it further shortly to decrease temps some :D.

My BFG 320MB is pretty happy at 671/850, although the fan has to stay at 100%, so it's a loud bugger.

wow 671!! nice o/c

That is a 320MB not 640MB.
Should be similar though.

What is the best way to stress your video card and make sure there is no artifacting and that the OC is stable?
I've heard different stories so thats why I'm asking.

Right now i have 651core and 1650mem using nTune for overclocking and i use Rivatuner for my fan control....My biggest issue is i cant get the mem past 1700 with the ntune test ..with out artifacts...but the CpU will pass at 670 with 1600mem ....should i just use Rivatuner to tune and forget Ntune?

you could try Atitool to stress it just let it runs its test....

BFG 8800GTS 640MB here at 600 core and 1800 ram and its perfectly happy
i like even numbers :p

I'm using ATI Tool 0.27beta to OC my GTS. Very easy to use.

Yeah thats kinda what i thought too...just needed more input ....I know these cards clock fast when properly cooled ..The nTune thing was iffy when i noticed no fan control...I will use Rivatuner for now on...thanxs for info "James"

Yep, most GTS's will run the OC speeds easily. I have mine BIOS flashed to 600/1850 on stock cooling. Using the DX10 Lost Planet Demo as a "loading" tool for the gpu, I am getting a max load of 86c and it has been at this temp for ~3 hours now. That's with the fan on stock parameters, by using Rivatuner to force fan speed to 80% the max temps hit only 79c, and at 100% it only sees 75c.

At a LAN party I just leave it 100%, at home where it is quiet I leave it at 80%.

wow 671!! nice o/c

I should add that's not without some artifacts in ATiTool, although it's after quite some time, and I don't notice it in my games otherwise.

Just curious, what's the difference between overclocking by flashing the BIOS and using ATiTool/RivaTuner? By that I mean, is there any advantage to using one way or another?

yes , youll no longer have to use a Oc tool after you find your optimal clock and flash your Bios...Just make shure when you flash you flash a lil under Oc so you know 100%it will work right....Cuz when a flash is to high Oc can wreak havoc on your Vidcard:eek:

i got my 8800 640 Mb card to 621/1 Ghz (2 Ghz). Also, my card locked up after upping my gpu to 635....

Also, i just found out that my puter just bottleneck'd.... I see no fps change when i was @ 621/950 and upped the ram to 1000. I ran hl2 lost coast, css stress test, fear, and few other benchmarks @ the resolution of 1680x1050 and very high quality. The fps in all benchmarks that I tested my card with were the same as it was @ 950 mhz ram speed. 0.o

got mine to 650 stable, stock cooling..unsure on memory, haven't pushed it yet.

I must have got a good one, or something....I'm running 660/1004. Stock Cooling. Never above 72C under full load (60+ min in stalker.....) No artifacts in ATI tool after 60 min.

Wow.

i just got mine yesterday but im running at 669/951 stable atm. anything higher on the memory i get artifacts. the core seems to want more tho.

I let ATI Tool find the max OC and mine was up around 670, but then it froze. I'll probably run mine at 625 or so. Still working on the memory. This is a non-superclocked eVGA. I don't think my memory is a very good OCer.

Wow, you folks have made me quite excited about my GTS (640) that's "Out for delivery" as I type...the anticipation is starting to build. So, let's see how the heat goes, and if the air fails, maybe it would be worth my dollars to go ahead and pick up the WC parts I had planned for the 2900XT or 8800GTX, with a different block of course. :D

Glad I have the security of taking off work for days like this and not worrying one little bit.

w00t, 5 minutes later it's hear! Just like the devil.. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D +1!

dot_zen, im jealous, last shipping update my 8800gts 640 was a few hundred miles from my house in a sorting center. it will definately be here tomorrow though :) i can't wait to get started on this card.

I am rocking a 684/1107 24/7 clock.

I can take it up to 702/1136 for benching, but it isn't completely stable there after about a half an hour.

It is an eVGA GTS 640, and it is Swiftech water cooled. I also pencil modded the memory voltage from 1.85v to 1.95v to get from 999MHZ to 1107MHZ.

Volt mod on the core is coming soon

it doesn't look like some of you know about how these cards OC. Check out this bit of info for more on what I mean: Link

Well, here's to wishing you an early 'tommorrow'. :D

I'm installed, no hitches (using the trusty safe mode is always best!). Idle temps are right at 44-47 C mid day in the ATL == Hot & Humid. Ran AtiTool for artifacts for nearly 1 1/2 hours without a hitch and got the temps to just @ 61C-63C. Just installed the Dx10 Demo for Lost planet, which looks way cool, even on default settings it blows away --graphically-- any other game I own (Oblivion, FEAR, Stalker, CoH (though, if CoH was a FPS, it would probably do well)). Well, blown away as in the snow constantly blowing, the smoke, the recoils, the explosions all just looked so damn smooth.

More testing, a few demos, then I may start to overclock this baby a bit.

Don't mean to steal your thread or hang a carrot in front of your face, but we'll both being going through the motions around the same time. iIt always makes me even happier to know someone else is having a blast with a product I'll be getting. :D

Do the GTS and GTX have the same chip? I thought they did but Im not sure.

Not exactly. The GTX has 128 stream processors instead of 96 on the GTS, a slightly different core, as well as 24 ROP's instead of 20, and 8 (I think) TMU's instead of 7. So, it does have some good advantages other than clock speeds.

Well, I OC'd 'em last night, just to give you an idea of the performer you may be getting as well. ;)

640mhz on the core and 1000mhz(2kmhz DDR) on memory stable. No artifacting. I've run all the demos available.:D

I pushed it to 675 on the core and 1100 on the mem, but it had a conit-fit. So, I choked it back some to about 673 and 1100, it was stable, but gave a little artifacting in the Lost Planet Demo. So, I'm very satisfied with my 8800GTS 640(mb)/640/2000.

Nice overclocks. I have an Inno3d 8800gts 640. Atitool artifact free at 612/1512/936. A nice performance boost from stock 513/1188/792.

dot_Zen, its on the truck for delivery right now. do you have bf2142? any issues so far? i read about a lot of ctd and odd textures w/ 8800 series cards and this game. Hopefully my card works flawlessly. :) looking forward to o/c'ing the beast.

I run mine at 625 Core and 1020 memory on stock cooling. No problems yet, I havent tried taking it any higher than this yet but i will when I get a case with better cooling. currently It idles at 68 and goes to 75 at load.

575/1700 is EASY.

On air, I was able to get 650/2000 stable.
:)

I can tell you that I have an evga 640MB version, and even with completely stock speeds I get weird memory errors and CTD's at every map change (thankfully not every round end). I still play though, its just hard when playing with a friend who doesn't crash and trying to stay on the same team. :)

Of course this could very well have something to do with my running Vista (32-bit). So don't worry, hopefully they'll patch soon to fix some things

<in reference to BF2142>

i got it today around 2pm and installed it w/ 158.22 drivers. i was able to o/c to 600/1800, i didn't try to go higher as this alone is overkill. i love this card! runs cool in my p182se too!

I'm at 690/1500/1950 with Swiftech liquid cooling. No volt mods (they make me nervous with a $400 card).

Call me a skeptic about some of the claimed clocks here, but, I'm always wondering just what exactly everyone assumes is "stable". Personally I use ATI Tool because it's the only test I know that mathematically scans for artifacts. But it seems like a lot of folks just try to look for artifacts visually, in which case the card may not be as stable as you think. For example, I've gone as high as 2080 memory, but after about five minutes in ATI Tool I start getting frequent errors. 975 is as high as I could go without issues.

I'm going to try bumping the shader clock up tonight. I had trouble at 1600, but I'm going to give 1550 or so a try.

Quik Q on a 8800320 Bfgtech...I know its not a 640 but my Gpu is @651mhz=648mhz and my shader is @1512mhz but my mem will only do 828mhz. Is it me or the memory should be able to go higher....?i was curiouse because i hit the Volt limit for Gpu when it steps too675mhz and dont want to volt mod...But the memory dosnt move much ,factory is like 792mhz..Just wondering.:p
