8800GT coolers....

What's wrong with the thermal tape that comes on the RAM sinks?

I've never had one fall off. I've used RAM sinks to help cool an electrical component on my motorcycle that gets much hotter than any memory chips on a graphics card and the tape holds fine.

well i read a couple of reviews and some forum posts (from this and others) and it appears the thermal tape that comes with the S1 is really shoddy at best.

I just ordered the S1 from newegg and some

Arctic Silver AATA-5G Thermal Compound

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835100013

for attaching the supplied heat syncs for the ram.

I just wish i had some step by step instructions on the installation of this thing.

This is my first after market GPU cooling solution. Ive done cpu after market cooling all the time but never GPU.

BTW my KO comes Friday from EVGA... YIPPEEE... am going to test it without a fan and with a fan on the S1

The S1 is pretty easy to install and comes with step-by-step instructions. However, if you can't wait, you can find a copy here:

Thank you :), was just hopein some one posted a step by step instructions for a 8800gt w/pics on the web.

But this works.

From an S1 cooler or other brand?

I let them sit for 20 minutes and had a book on them. I flipped it upside down and 3 fell off, I gave it a slight shake and 4 more fell off, tapped the last one because I was pissed.

Hell I even help a lighter to the RAMsinks to try and get them to "thermally active", but no go.

For those having troubles with the heatsinks on the 8800 GT make sure you REALLLLLLLY clean the 8800 GT well as the thermal tape is extremely "wet" not sure how else to say it.

And when applying the heatsinks just put a bit of AS5 on the bottom and seat them its all I did and they are perfectly fine.

Has anyone tried a DuOrb on a 8800gt? Theoretically it should work, but I'm wondering if there are any clearance issues.

I have a question, how could I mount the stock fan of my intel E6750 cpu on the accelero S1? does the S1 have mounting holes for fans or not?

No mounting holes, if you snip off 2/4 plastic "gripper/holders" it should fit on the fins.

That looks great too bad it's water cooling and not air. Water is more expensive and extra stuff to have to maintain. Bleh. Not interested.

Just someone make a coppper aircooler that covers all the items properly like that, and pair it with a nice quiet 80mm or bigger fan. Sold.

Speak for yourself. That's exactly what I've been waiting for. I have two of them for my sli 7900gt's and love 'em.

Now I just gotta wait for west coast custom computers to carry them.

That's good news for you, but not for those of us waiting for a proper air-cooled heatsink/fan combo.

It's really not hard to ask that these resellers (eVGA, BFG, XFX, etc) offer a model with a copper heatsink on it that actually covers all the important items like the stock one, only cools it more effectively for better overclocking and comes with a larger, cooler and quieter fan setup.

Accelero S1 with fan. Temps are MAGIFICENT.

Air temp is 23C. Case temp is 36C. GPU temp is 45 after 10 minutes running ATI artifacter. (I had been playing Crysis before).

YES~!

I don't know if I should get the accelero plus more ramchips, a fan and artic silver adhesive or wait for a full 8800gt combo

Edit oh and what was the ratio for artic silver adhesive with normal artic silver for ramsinks to be removed without problems?

Blah svc is out of stock on accelero for 18.99, directron has it for 21 but no artic silver, would pay more with shipping different sites anyways

Hello,

I have just ordered my pc with the following specs. The order includes a EVGA KO Video Card PCI-e (nV) 8800GT 512MB. Now, I have been reading here that these cards can climb quite high. Just wondering if the general consensus would be to already commit and pre-order a Thermalright HR-03 GT or wait and see what the runs like? And...if so, how do I go about installing the cooler? I spoke to a computer store and they mentioned that it's advisable to run the card for a bit then pull it out of the machine whilst it's still quite warm then perform the cooler installation then...is there any sort of guide for installing vga coolers? (note: I don't intend on overclocking my pc and I do intend on building a clean pc setup ie. not having a messy case and having cables all tied down, installing extra fans to improve air-flow)

Thanks In Advance

Iam suprised you actually got quite intelligent advice from a computer store. When you heat up the card abit, the thermal paste becomes warm and the heatsinks comes off easier. Also you might consider to loosen the heatsink screws in a proper order. Other than that there really is not much rules when it comes to heatsink changes, except that take your time and do not make any sudden moves :p

Think there will be more coolers coming out? The s1 is too massive for my taste.

They will all be massive, get a DuORB if you want smaller, or go water.

Honestly, though the S1 is pretty thin. It's only 4mm taller than a DuORB

Yeah but then once you add the 120mm fan on top of that, its HUGE . I might just get the vf900 and call it a day. But Im not gaming too much these days so I can also wait it out to see if anything new comes out.

Alright more temp goodness for the 8800GT. I purchased myself an Accelero S1 passive heatpipe cooler and slapped it on.

8800GT clocks = 685/1690/985 (I shall push further!)

Load was measured after 4 loops of Crysis GPU benchie .bat file. Idle was measured 15 minutes after boot up at the desktop.

Stock default fan idle: 62C Stock default fan load: 95C
Stock 43% fan idle: 56C Stock 43% fan load: 85C
S1 passive idle: 48C S1 passive load: 68C

Dudes these are PASSIVE numbers for the S1. I'm totally blown away that this thing would drop the load numbers that much without a fan directly attached to the S1. Unfortunately I do believe that now 4 ram sinks have fallen off... Grrrrr I'll have to attach those with something stickier than the cheap 3M tape they shipped with. I cleaned off the S1 of its factory applied paste and put on a drop of Arctic Silver 5.

In my AeroCool Extreme Engine 3T case I've got a 14cm front intake fan at low, 25cm side intake fan at low and 12cm exhaust fan set at high. (those Yate Loon fans are creepy silent I tell you) My PSU has a 12cm exhaust fan and my CPU has a Zalman 7700AlCu cooler with its 12cm fan set to low.

I've yet to play like 3 hours of Crysis so that's the next test. I'll post pack to see how a short marathon of Crysis works out. With the stock cooler it would lock up after about 2 hours of Crysis play.

Ninja EDIT: Whilst typing this post yet another ram sink has fallen off... lol

UPDATE: I played 2 hours straight and no lock-ups. I also found a new load temp - 68C. Still very happy! :)

They are secure like that? one tap to the case and they might fall

I am thinking of the Zalman VF1000 & RHS88 combo.

Looks like the RHS88 will cover the whole card, including all the memory modules.

:D

Yeah the RAMsinks and 3M crap tape is really that bad. I took no chances and used superglue on mine. Grats on your passive HS.

Super glue? So if/when I want to do my EVGA step-up how would one go about getting the ram sinks off if they were attached with super glue?

So I guess, erm, what are some alternatives to superglue to keeping ram sinks on by any chance...? :|
