8800GT coolers....

Silenx ripping off Zalman much? Perhaps they're just having Zalman's contracted factory making their cooler for them as well - not exactly the same but very similar to the vf700 al/cu.

IMHO (not having either an 8800 [yet] or competing coolers), the S1 is better, and assuming you can fit one if will outperform all but maybe an actively cooled HR-03. It's certainly got price on it's side ($17.75 @ Ewiz). Lots of surface area, cools quite well passively (assuming good case cooling to start), cools better with a decent low-speed 120mm [or two - no need really for high-speed fans btw]. The only real drawback is the already noted crappy TIM on the ramsinks - easily enough to remedy as noted a few places. When I installed my cooler on the soon to be retired 7900, at most 1/2 actually stuck - but then again I didn't properly CLEAN the memory ICs before hand w/ 91% [?] Rubbing Alkyhol - in other words DO IT; may make a BIG difference! Besides, you'll need at least 10-12 (right?) to properly cover the 8800GT, and it only is supplied w/ 8, so more a-shopping you will go - ~$13 for the copper Enzotech's @ Petra's seems like a good deal.

The S1 looks cool, but, according to reviews, you have to add a fan or two to it for it to be competitive with other active cooling solutions like the VF900 and such.

I did almost buy an S1 or S2, though.

Yes, it's easy. No, you don't have to reinstall with a driver update (unlike the old coolbits hack) although you may have to reapply your settings within RT. There are two settings areas within RT, hardware-level and driver-level. Fan speed control is the second tab under driver-level settings (the second customize button on the main screen), and lets you set the fan speed independently for all three performance categories (2D, 3D, and 3D Performance--the last is the one you're in when running games). Monitoring temps is done with the Hardware Monitoring button under the hardware-level settings (the first customize button on the main screen).

Thanks. Does RT have to be set to run at start up?

So, the HR-03 Rev A will fit the 8800gt, but does it require any modding? Also, will I need to buy some extra ramsinks or will it come with enough to cover everything? One last thing, do you guys think the hr-03 is worth the $55+ (with a good fan +shipping) compared to the VF-900?

Wow... You have to tie fans on it for it to cool better...

The S1 completly wipes the floor for price and performance on air cooling.

I was just saying that a quality, quiet fan (or two) increases the price significantly, that's all. Calm down :p

It cost me $35 to strap a S1 to my 8800 and its quiet and I can't hear it at all and its a good investment.

That's precisely the reason I went for the Zalman knockoff by Silenx.

$10 cheaper and it's still way better than the stock fan and I can't hear it.

Different strokes ;)

You have any temps for that? I'm tempted to get the S1 + fan instead of the stock cooler on my 8800GT.

yea i put my HR03 on last night

although i don't know if you'll need them, but i put 4 extra heatsinks on the 4 other cooled components (as per the original thermal padson the stock HS)..

you can see my HR03 mounted Here

Only reason I don't like the HR-03 is the sheer thickness of it after you add a fan!

I have an S1 w/o a fan and it is holding my temps at 36C idle, 47C load (the AS Ceramique is starting to drop temps, I reported 1C higher yesterday). The intake fan on my PC, however, is only about 2 inches from the front of the accelero. The beauty is that it is so huge but only has 32 fins - enough for dissipating heat w/o the need to force air into really close fins (like the HR-03 PLUS I had on my 8800 GTS). Minimal airflow can easily move through the S1 without much interruption, making it quiet and efficient. Oh, and it's $20...

Man I really want to get a S1 but I don't know if it will fit in my case. The dimensions state 140x215x32. How exactly do they measure the length? Do they start against the motherboard and measure till the farthest point or do they start against the PCI-E slot? Measuring from the PCI-E slot to the side door I have about 140mm so I am getting really close, man that thing is a beast. Anyone happen to use the S1 in a Praetorian?

 So still no word on a dualslot cooler for the 8800gt I guess ? Really annoying ! This shouldn't be to hard to do now "they" know this thing runs bl**dy hot ??

I think you require memory heatsinks. Fortunately many aftermarket heatsinks include them. Check out the SilenX IXG-80CA at NewEgg for a good, quiet, inexpensive one.

I think he's looking for an air cooler that covers the full range of items that need to be cooled: GPU core, RAM chips, and MOSFETs. Hopefully someone will release one soon =)

I got my card (Evga KO version) in today and stock it idles at 59C, Ati Tool's artifact test gets it to ~71C, 1 hour of TF2 gets it to about 91C.

I just installed my old KuFormula VF1+ and so far only tested Ati Tool's artifact test, but the temps are down to 49C on low fan speed setting.

I've got a question though, I noticed the stock cooler cools these red circled areas, but my KuFormula doesn't. I was wondering if anyone else is cooling those areas with a after market cooler or if I should even worry about it? I was going to put some extra ram sinks on them.

8800gtkuformula.jpg

Wait, is the KuFormula VF1+ passive? I can't see where you would attach a fan!!!

Anyone know a way I could make some DIY heatsinks to put on the circled circuitry above? Anything is better than bare :)

As long as you have adequate cooling those circled areas are fine by themselves, I have nothing on them and my card isn't even hot there.

Ok...so I've read this thread and am I correct in that if you are NOT going to OC a card over what it's factory set then you shouldn't need to buy an after-market cooler? I was looking at getting a KO when they're available again and I've got all my questions answered except for this one. Thanks for any enlightenment :D

Lok,

It is my feeling that even if you are not going to overclock, it is a good idea to get a cooler for these cards.

They run HOT.

For the record, I just bought two Accelero S1 coolers with the Turbo Modules.

If you are not going to OC, you *COULD* run the default cooler at high speed, but it makes a noise that I don't like.

If you get a KO card, it is even more important to get an aftermarket cooler, because they do not upgrade it, so it is *as if* you were overclocking a default card.

All you need to do is download Rivatuner and change the driver level settings of the fan to the highest you can stand. I was able to go to 40+ before I could even hear it and at 50% it was like half a decibal louder than the system. Under load my cpu fan speeds up and cancels it out anyway.

Regardless of overclocking or not to get the best performance a aftermarket cooler is a good idea.

Thanks for the input lordsegan rhagz :D I'll definitely keep both options in mind.

Of course these little cards have a ton of headroom, so a good cooler and some overclocking is practically begging you to do it.

Those shoudlnt increase in heat if I overclock and/or overvolt will they?

Exsqueeze me?!?!?!:D

Last I checked - EVERYTHING increased in heat when overclocked/overvolted.

More energy in then more energy out - for electronics of all kinds, that means more heat output.

Try it with an incandesant bulb on a dimmer switch.
Dim light = cool bulb
Bright Light = OUCH!!!

I meant to the point of which it could damage the components without use of a cooler on them.

It's all a guessing game. You can run without good cooling for years and be OK. Or you can push it too far and blow it out in a month. Hard to say. I go with better cooling personally.

As I assumed, so I'll repeat my question, anyone know a way I could make some DIY heatsinks to put on them?

Getting them to stay stuck on seems to be the hardest part, and that makes it dangerous to OC if they might fall off. And not everyone wants to get sticky with epoxy and stuff. Kinda scary if you aren't sure what you're installing is going to perform well. It's all a bit off-putting. Would rather wait for someone to release a proper cooler made for teh GT that covers all the important stuff.

I just ordered the S1 from newegg and some

Arctic Silver AATA-5G Thermal Compound

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835100013

for attaching the supplied heat syncs for the ram.

I just wish i had some step by step instructions on the installation of this thing.

This is my first after market GPU cooling solution. Ive done cpu after market cooling all the time but never GPU.

BTW my KO comes Friday from EVGA... YIPPEEE... am going to test it without a fan and with a fan on the S1
