8800GT coolers....

I asked this on SilentPCReview, but nobody seems to have an answer.

How much room exists under the Artic Cooling Accelero S1 for RAM / IC heatsinks?

For example, would the 14mm Swiftech MC14 fit beneath the S1?

The Accelero S1 comes with its own ramsinks.
You might as well try them and if you feel they can be improved on, get some alternatives once you know the clearances for sure.
You can customise the main heatsink to accept taller ramsinks by nipping bits off the heatsink fins.
The cooler is that good, I doubt it would have a negative impact on any core overclock.

Worthy of note:
I hade to break up the Accelero S1's VRM heatsink into 2 parts and then shape the fins to fit over the VRMs on the GT as my Accelero S1 wasnt specced for an 8800GT.
They may sell 8800 versions now.
The 2 heatsinks I created for the VRMs have actual contact with the main Coolers fins once everything is locked in place. I'm happy about this as its an extra path for cooling and also pushes those 2 heatsink onto the VRMs more.

I have found that the gel glue on the original ramsinks doesnt stick at all well.
I used Ceramique paste on top of the Gel to get me going but my max memory overclock speed has reduced by approx 10% !! (originally ran over 1050, now at 940MHz)
Right, thats it, after posting this I'm removing them and boiling the gel off so I can finally know how good the ramsinks are :)
FYI

Will a 120mm fan fit the Thermalright HR-03 GT? I have a few extra and would like to save some money on buying a 92mm fan.

hey i was wondering if anyone had seen if a 7900gtx stock cooler could work on an 8800gt. i know the mounting holes are the same, and that most of the coolers that worked on the 7900gtx worked on the 8800gt. i read that the back of the card might have some thing that wouldnt be cooled, but i was wondering if its possible?

I installed the S1 cooler on the 8800GT and running it passively. I've lowered my idle tems 20C from the stock cooler and haven't gone over 45C with the case fan turned all the way up (fan nearest cooler). With the fan nearest on high, I the idle was 39C. I am conisdering attaching a something to the fan to direct more air to the cooler, but I don't think I'll need to. I will give ATI tool a try tonight and see how the cooler does. Overall, I am pretty happy!

I got tired of trying to get some heat sinks to stick to everything else, so I picked up some of the custom heat sinks and they work great.

I have a dumb question regarding about the installation of ram sinks. The sinks have thermal tape stuck on them, so does that mean I don't need to apply any thermal compound (like AS5) onto the memory? The thermal tape is essentially thermal compound, correct?

I'm noticing everyone using Ceramique for the heatsinks. Would AS5 work just as well? I still have tons of AS5 left and don't really want to buy another tube just for heatsinks =P

Got my BFG 8800GT in today and temps were as expected, 57C idle and high 80's low 90's load with the fan on 60%, it was stable though and running great.. i had been playing Crysis for about 30 mins giddy about how great it was running on high when the fan on the stock cooler kinda.. broke.

It started rattling and making noise and i thought my hard drive was dying so i checked and the fan was spinning intermittently and catching on something, i still have no idea what it looks completely unimpeded.

I had intended to order an S1 cooler since they are so cheap but luckily i have a case of TR HR-03 GT's sitting here so i put one of those on and now im getting 40C idle and about 57C load with only an 80mm 5v fan on it, im currently running 700mhz core and 1000mhz ram successfully too.

This card is really impressive coming from a 7900GT, it runs better than i expected even after reading a lot of reviews.

Ok, finally finished installing the Accelero!
It took me a long time as it wouldnt fit in my case because my 3D Mercury case has built in water cooling and the pre installed gear was in the way preventing the accelero from fitting. I had to remove 4 fins plus both plastic black covers to make it fit ( In needed to remove the black plastic cover next to the sata connectors of my DFI NF4 ultra d as it wouldnt allow me to use on the satas!
Well, even without 4 fins my load temps are 49C compared to my 63C with the stock cooler....the catch is, to get 63C with the stock cooler I was running at 100% fan and getting cold air from the window using an air duct (temp outside at about 30F when I tested the last time).
With the Accelero I am getting 49C load with a room temp of 61F...if I were to use the air duct it would be much lower.
Also, while overclocking higher wasnt my main concern I was able to go from 753/1836 to 771/1890 with a much more silent setup.....THUMBS UP!!!! :D

Accelero is that passive one right? That one is pretty cheap? I think im gonna need one, not sure what to get. Links. :)

What are the best and cheapest coolers for the 8800GT.

Can someone tell me what the difference between the accelero S1 and S2 are as well please.

I just can't believe some of you don't mind running an 8800GT with the fan speed at 75 or 100%. I have 2 fans in my case, the CPU fan and the PSU fan and even at 40% I can definitely hear the GPU fan over anything else. At 75% it's just loud as hell...unless I have earphones on with really loud music or am playing a playing a loud game, I really hear the GPU fan.

Luckily my temp is around 75% only when playing games with the fan at 40%, but if it starts heating up a lot, setting the fan to 100% is just not an option. I love the card, but I'm really glad NVIDIA noticed that the cooling wasn't too great and is releasing a new version of the 8800GT.

The difference between S1 and S2 is price and compatibility.

I now for a fact that the S1 fits the 8800GT and it's what artic cooling says is compatible, but I heard that people were ablt to fit the S2 on the GT.

The S2 is cheaper though.

I'd stick with the S1 because for one, I have it and know that it fit. Also, the heat sink on the S1 is LARGER than the S2.

S1 = 140(L) x 215(W) x 32(H) mm
S2 = 140(L) x 188(W) x 32(H) mm

From www.artic-cooling.com

When I have my GT OC'd to 725/1760/2000, my idle/load (ati tool) = 37C-46C (ambient room temp 23C)

That seems amazing to me a passive heatsink works that well on a top end video card. That sounds great. I do have a vf900 right now but I think I need to sell it with my 7900GT

A big difference between the S1 and S2 (besides their size) is that the S1 has 4 heatpipes, whle the S2 only has 2.

Oh wow, I didn't even notice the 2hp v 4hp. They are the same diameter too.

I don't run mine passive though. I use a Azenx Bliztorm slot fans.

What coolers does anyone recommend for me ? I went through the whole thread and couldn't find a great response.

I picked my baby up yesterday .

What do you mean? Everyone recommends the Accelero S1...its pretty much the people's choice...

I'm in the same boat. My 7900GTO is in my 2nd computer right now and I'd like to know if one can do a clean swap.

I just installed my old KuFormula VF1+ and so far only tested Ati Tool's artifact test, but the temps are down to 49C on low fan speed setting.

I took JohnleMVP's lead and installed my old Sytrin KuFormula VF1+ on my 8800GT as well. At 738/1836/1950 it's idling at 39C and according to the RivaTuner log I'm only going up to 52C during COD4 @ 1600 x 1200 with all options cranked. This cooler was awesome on my 7900GT and X1900XT and now it's awesome again. Great value.

Yeah, that KuFormula VF1+ is an awesome cooler. I remember when it was by far the best cooler for my X1900XTX last year shortly after it was released. That thick, heavy copper base and thick heatpipe kept the temps lower than many Zalman heatsinks from for Pentium4/AthlonXP! I've experimented with quite a few CPU heatsinks on my video cards.. it was fun!

Hey, you guys might want to check out my thread that has a list of the top 9 best air coolers with some additional info:

I know about the 14mm restriction. Haven't been able to find the dimensions of these things anywhere though and thought that maybe someone here may have tried them with a S1.

Right, good point. :p

How are those custom RAM and MOSFET sinks working for you?

They seem to be working well... I haven't had any problems, so I'd say they're doing their job. I like how they fit more than anything.:)

If I didn't get the custom ones, I was looking at the Thermalright ones in the pictures.

I still don't get how AC manages to sell their, really, high quality products for so little. They list the msrp at $28.95.

My Cooler 7 CPU cooler was like $20.00 and has a high quality fan, and a sheethed fan cable. (And has my Q6600, OCed to 3.0ghz, idling in the mid 30s)

I guess they just want to make money on quantity and not bend us over like everyone else.

Just got mine from the Egg today. I wonder what these modifications to the heatpipes are in v2. It also mentions new mounting hardware. I'm guessing these are specifically for the new Radeons since the existing Accelero mounts perfectly on the 8800GT.

Hasn't v2 been up on AC's site for awhile now?
http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=147

I read of one guy who put an Accelero on a 3870 and he said it was easy. Is the 3850 different? The Arctic Cooling site lists 3870 as compatible but I dont see 3850. In any event, the bottom of article I linked said revised unit would not be available until Feb 08.

Odd...

Since the S1 already fits the 3850/3870 and 8800GT I wonder why they are even modifying the mounting system. Probably marketing.

I plan on getting the Accelero S1 and attaching a Yate Loon 120mm fan. Should I also apply ramsinks and/or mofset sinks? If so, what is the best commercial set(s) to get that will allow me to cool all of them?

I saw the Thermalright set ... but it only comes with 4 sinks, which appear to be for the mofsets. Do they make a ramsink set as well? I couldn't find one anywhere.

I have done the following to my EVGA KO:

  • Accelero S1
  • Zalman Blue RAMSinks (these stick great as the AC ones don't!)
  • Coolermaster DDR RAMSinks (TSOP style sinks) on MOSFETS
  • Nexus 120mm fan

With this setup in my LL V1000 and all fans at 5 or 7v I am getting idling in the low 30s and load in the mid to high 40s. I am yet to break 50c! This is at 720/1800/990
