7970 Purchasing Thread

Happy birthday present to myself...MSI 7970 ordered. I was about to pull the trigger on the XFX model, but got pulled away from my desk for work, and when I came back, it was OOS.

Two 5850s will be for sale here shortly. :D

The pull to get one of these now is difficult to resist.

I think what I'm going to do is wait until the custom cooler versions are in stock (I'd prefer a Asus DirectCU III or MSI Lightning model) then sell my two 6970's.

Then over time, when I find that I need it, I may spring for 7970 number 2.

Ordered a Sapphire last night. Newegg shipped it today and I keep hitting refresh on the tracking number, just so I can see with my own eyes that it's coming :) Super excited to retire my crossfired 5770s.

I sold my two 6970 5 weeks ago and I just received my new HIS 7970 from NCIX.
Let's now see if it is up to the task!

Sapphire in stock at Amazon for $599. Great for CA, no tax, free ship if prime. Yes it's $50 more than MSRP, but I couldn't wait! I ordered one.

Just ordered the Gigabyte OC Winforce edition to replace my XFX BEDD since that's going back to NCIX due to rattling fans. The BEDD is a really nice card, but it really isn't quiet, nor does it cool amazingly.
The Windforce looks like it'll do a much better job at cooling and hopefully it won't be as noisy as the BEDD.

Wow, thats going to be a huge jump from 5770's to a 7970! You'll be stoked!! My Sapphire from Newegg is coming from California, should be here in FL by Friday :)

I am as well excited...... well, sort of until I read the Crossfire article on the front page.......ugh..........more AMD Bullshizzle.

I ordered an MSI on Monday, and couldn't stand only having one......so I decided to bite the bullet, ordered the second one last night.

One from CA, one from NJ.............both arrive Today!!:D

Where? Where did you purchase the windfirce from? I would love one!

Sold my 2 5850's and expect my 7970 here tomorrow. Got $240 for them so I didn't kill the bank account to badly.

i've never bought from buy.com. i'd bet that the product description is just a place holder for when the cards are available, and someone goofed and used it for the standard MSI 7970. that or it is for the TFIII card and when you checkout you'll get an email saying your product should ship in 1-6 months.

edit: i see you've solved it above, nice job.

It's actually not from buy.com. If you read the text, it's actually TigerDirect selling through buy.com. I'm not sure how that makes sense for either company, but well, there it is...

Actually, this is sketchy. I don't think its actually a Twin Frozor III. If you copy the part number from the buy.com page and search for it you wind up here:

http://www.msi.com/product/vga/R7970-2PMD3GD5.html

It's a regular 7970...

And that is the only 7970 MSI has listed on their webpage...

yeah i think it's gonna be, at the very least, another month before we get an MSI-tweaked card :(

oh well, gives me time to save and gets me closer to ivy bridge hehe

just ordered the visiontek 7970 from tigerdirect.com, for 559, a few mins later, it was unavailable, lets hope i got the last one, and it really will be here tomorrow (I next day aired it)

Why not Direct CU III?

I have two of the DirectCU II 6970 boards.

The cooler is great and very effective.

Downside is that the 6970's don't overclock very well at stock volts, and the custom VRM's mean that MSI's Afterburner doesn't work to change voltages. (I don't like Asus' overclocking tool)

The outputs are great (though I would have preferred 3 DVI's, definitely doable with all that real estate back there).

If you are considering this, keep in mind that 3 slots take up a lot of space. It becomes difficult to find a motherboard that has slots laid out so that you can have two of these bad boys both at x16. if I wanted to go to tri-fire I couldn't without putting the third in one of the X4 slots, and even at that, it wouldn't fit in my case, and I would have nowhere to put my Titanium H soundcard.

My Setup:

This is why I want to go with two slot custom cooler next time. I'm hoping for an MSI Twin Frozr or Lightning or something like that.

don't forget that Direct CU cards won't work well with vertical orientations, compared to MSI lightning cards, because the heatpipes run the length of the card.

Just got my Sapphire 7970, waiting for the new drivers to install (looking at a 640x480 screen right now while I wait). Oh man, I'm so excited. I haven't had the top of the line of a video card since the Diamond Monster 3D (Before Canopus came out with the 6MB Pure 3d). Drivers done, time to game! Goign to from 5770s in crossfire, so I'm guessing it's going to be something special :)

I too got my Sapphire 7970 tonight, and I've been messing around with drivers. It's finally up and running. Time to run through some games and benches and see how this thing runs compared to my 6950's.

Managed to order a Gigabyte 7970 a few minutes ago from newegg (they also had the Diamond back in stock for a few minutes). I hope my order doesn't get backordered though, it went out of stock right after I ordered.

I never thought of that, looking at them though, you are correct.

I haven't had huge issues with that though. They would probably run cooler in a horizontal orientation, but they still run pretty cool.

I'm holding off for the Twin Frozr / Lightening cards I think. I'm hoping they won't take too long.

Me too. Although I dont know how much longer I want to hold off.

I'm pretty happy with my current performance. I don't really NEED a 7970 today. I feel like I will appreciate having two of them in the future, but right now, it doesn't make much of a difference for what I play.

My concern is the second hand value of my 6970's is dropping every day I don't sell them.

I also don't want to rush and get a stock design I will be unhappy with...

Got my Sapphire 7970 and it's installed and wonderful. Can finally crank up the AA, etc.

I am noticing, however, that I get an occasional screen flicker on my main monitor (two-monitor setup) in SWTOR when I'm running in windowed mode. When I switch to fullscreen, no flicker. I wonder if it's some sort of timing issue. Using the HDMI to DVI cable and the DVI output to the main monitor.
