7970 HD3D Eyefinity Musings

Does the 7970 have the same restrictions as the 5000 and 6000 series regarding needing to use one of the native DP outputs (with an active adapter) for an all HDMI Eyefinity group?

My hope/plan was that both of the mini-DP links would support DP++ (dual mode DisplayPort) and I'd therefore be able to use passive DP to HDMI adapters on them. This would allow HDMI 1.4a signalling on 3 output ports from the 7970 thus enabling a stereoscopic 3D Eyefinity setup using 3 Optoma GT750E projectors.

The next best thing would be an adapter that supports HDMI 1.4a to perform the necessary frame packing but I foresee difficulty in getting the proper timing between the links/projectors/emitter to allow for 3D. (And I don't think a DP -> HDMI 1.4a adapter exists yet)

Is there any way to create an HD3D Eyefinity group with a 7970 yet? If HD3D Eyefinity requires DP monitors and there are only 2 mini-DP ports on the card (and no hubs yet) then how the hell is this supposed to work?

Thanks,
M.

From the 7970's footnote page:

"To enable more than two displays, additional panels with native DisplayPort™ connectors, and/or DisplayPort™ compliant active adapters to convert your monitor’s native input to your cards DisplayPort™ or Mini-DisplayPort™ connector(s), are required."

I guess that means no native 3xHDMI 1.4a connectivity from a 7970. And DP->HDMI 1.4a converters don't exist. So stupid.

Also, I've read that HD3D Eyefinity requires DP displays. With only 2 mini-DP outputs on a reference 7970 that means that a Multi-Stream Transport hub is required. These don't currently exist either. Only date that I've found for MST hubs was 2011, that's come and gone and so the next date mentioned is Summer 2012.

It's like AMD is selling you a time machine without the flux capacitor ... but claiming that the flux capacitor is available from its 3rd party partners.

Looks like Kepler for 3D Surround using projectors.

I am also curious on how to solve this conundrum… Have anyone successfully implemented hd3d eyefinity ?

Exactly. It is a huge mistake to include a HDMI output and not a third DP. Eyefinity users are screwed with the 7970 if they don't have a third monitor that can do DVI-D.

7970 supports hdmi 1.4a specs, but not 1.4a natively fully. they have "overclocked" hdmi 1.3 to get 4k resolution possible

It’s this higher transmission speed that AMD is adding support for in Southern Islands. AMD calls this Fast HDMI technology, which as near as we can tell is not any kind of HDMI trademark but simply AMD’s branding for high speed HDMI. With Fast HDMI AMD will be able to drive 4K x 2K displays over HDMI – which looks like it will be the common connector for TVs at those high resolutions – along with being able to support 1080P S3D at higher framerates with next-generation TVs. Currently AMD’s cards and TVs alike can only handle 1080P frame packed S3D at up to 48fps (24Hz/eye), or with a bit of hacking up to 60fps (30Hz/eye), which is fine for 24fps movies but much too low for gaming. As next-generation TVs add support for 1080P frame packed S3D at 120fps (60Hz/eye) Southern Islands products will be the first AMD products able to drive them over HDMI through the use of Fast HDMI..

The 4K resolution is only at 24Hz. HDMI 1.4a cannot even do 1080P 120Hz, how sad is that!

Wait i thought Display port supported daisy chaining.

AMD's paper (http://www.amd.com/us/Documents/AMD_Radeon_Display_Technologies_WP.pdf) shows that the 6k series support Display Port 1.2 which supports daisy chaining

AMD said:
DisplayPort 1.2, a new display interface, boasts features such as higher bandwidth and daisy-chaining capabilities. Combined, these features complement the AMD Eyefinity1 multi-display technology very well.

Daisy chaining is a marketing myth! AMD has promised daisy chaining since Eyefinity was released. There hasn't been a single component brought to market that allows daisy chaining and the MST DP "hubs" that were suppose to come out over a year ago have fallen off the face of the Earth.

Yup. Also sad the HDMI spec is allowed to be implemented in parts and pieces.

Therein lies the problem with 'partner-dependent' specifications, not everyone that uses your spec is going to follow it 100% (like with USB1.0 and HTML5), usually because of either cost-to-implement or time-to-market issues (we have to have it out before they do).

Now, specifications that evolve faster than hardware, that is an even worse situation.

Well, it's mostly due to partner issues. IIRC, the Anandtech HD7970 article covers this somewhat.

At any rate, Apple has went ahead and done it (though Thunderbolt only for the first display, and limited to two displays, iirc).

Something of a newb question here - would I be able to use the mini-DP ports from both cards in a 2-way Crossfire setup to allow me to run HD3D to 3 DP-compatible monitors?

nope, you use the inputs only off the 1st card. unfortunately both amd and nvidia don't have great solutions here - nvidia forces you to more than 1 card for more than 2 inputs, amd limits you to the first card but gives you more inputs per card.

Looks like its just down to greed, more money out of are pockets :(. The samsung 750d only has Dp but its big brother has both Dp & Dvi-D been more money and you cant really use the 950 for eyefinity as 3 look a bit stupid, so all we can do is wait for a 7960 eyefinity edition if they make one and how much or the 7990? :(

I have heard of people using the Atlona Dual link DVI -> mini DP converter with limited sucess for three screen eyefinity @ 120hz on DP-only monitors, has anyone here done it? I can't seem to get past 60hz with the adaptor on my Samsung S27A750D!
