7970 coming down to $449 ?

Now that nVidia has showed off their latest high end VideoCard, the GTX-680, and it seems to be approx 12% faster on average compared to the ATI-7970, and nVidia is pricing it competitively at $499. To me then the 7970 definitely needs a price reduction to like $449 now. That $550 pricing is insane.

Will this happen soon ?

Probably not for a while. The 680s are sold out pretty much everywhere.

That's not going to stop people from waiting on 680s though. I'd assume the sales of the 7900 series just fell off a cliff, and will remain that way until prices are adjusted properly.

Tigerdirect had them in stock all day and still does right now if anyone wants one.

AMD will lower prices for sure. As it stands. 7950 pricing = GTX680 pricing while the GTX680>7970.

Makes sense? No? Not to anybody else either except AMD fanboys.

$400ish sounds right for a 7970.

wish i had never clicked this thread. I thought maybe someone had heard something official. Hell, this isn't even a rumor.

In terms of street prices, NCIX here in Canada has a HIS 7950 for $400 this week (no rebate).

I'm not sure where you get 12% Most sites put at 4-7% when you add it all up depending on resolution.

And basically the same speed at eyefinity/surround resolutions. AMD really just needs to lower to ~$500. If they do drop to $450 that would be awesome - no complaints here :)

I honestly don't see AMD dropping the 7970 to $450. Isn't that card more expensive to manufacture as well?

They would be cutting deep into their profits if they reduce it to $450. I think $500 is more likely.

Be careful, I ordered from TD earlier today and turns out they were actually out of stock even though it was listed as in stock on their website... Thankfully was able to cancel and order from the Egg.

I've heard about TD not keeping active stock. Its a really good chance that they are out and they are just selling the next wave.

I don't think its any more expensive to manufacture than a 7950. Its basically the exact same chip, except that the 7950 has a few things disabled. I think the way it works is that they make all 7970 chips - and inevitably there will be some where some parts don't come out right or dont work. They then disable these parts and brand it a 7950. So no, I don't think it costs more to manufacture - but they will charge you more when everything comes out right.

AMD would be stupid to drop their prices to $500 like someone above suggested. Why pay the same amount for a video card with less performance than a gtx 680? Right now there's pretty much no reason to go with a 7970 at that price point. For AMD to stay relevant sales wise they'd need to bump the price of the 7970 down to around the $475 mark, perhaps even lower to $450. Personally, If I'm already paying $400+ for a video card, a $25 price difference for a 7-10% performance increase is not going to deter me from buying the gtx 680. Now if the price difference was say $50 with the 7970 priced at $450, then AMD would have a better argument for their case.

Drop the reference versions of the 7970 to $475 and let the aftermarket versions with better cooling and such go for $500. That's fair based on the benchmark data thats out there. I guess it ultimately depends on what profit margin AMD is currently working with now on those cards. My guess is they'll adjust the pricing models once the 7990s are ready to be sold.

Instead of AMD dropping prices, they should concentrate on optimizing the efficiency of their drivers especially at mainstream resolutions.

The differences overall are so small, optimizing should easily be able to make up the difference.

Default power tune sliders to max and such...

Even if they make up the difference its still $50 more and the amount of time that takes could be months.

This, I don't see them cutting it down to 450 at all. 500? Maybe. Possibly even a little lower, but I don't think they're in any hurry or panicking by any means. Neither company is in a hurry to get into a price war, that I can guarantee, especially considering all the manufacturing problems right now.

I would expect to see a slight increase in performance for the GTX 680 after it has been out a month or two and the drivers have been fine tuned. Let's say it averages out to 10% better performance than the 7970. $450 would be the smart way to price it from the consumer perspective (110% performance/price would be $495).

They should drop it to at least $399, maybe even $350 as a 660 or 670 will be along soon and increase price pressure. Hell it could be $299 in just a few months.

now talk about some BS right there..........

AMD had to make some extra cash somehow. Now it'll come back to a more reasonable level. Lack of compitition does not lend well to consumers.

If I can get a 7970 for $350 then I would upgrade in a heatbeat. With current prices, my unlocked 6950 just has too much value still. I think AMD's mistake was pricing it's new products relative to the price and performance of their previous generation. Trouble is they've given me no compelling reason to upgrade within my respective price point.

If the myth is true then a Tahiti chip with all shaders enabled may come out to replace the $500 tier and drive down costs of the other cards.

Edit: whoops meant to post this in the thread where there was the debate about better 2D quality on AMD cards

I've run countless nVidia and ATi cards over the past decade and a half. In the days when VGA ports were the standard ATi did have better 2D quality than nVidia. But ever since the switch DVI & HDMI, I have not been able to tell the difference. It's digital now, so it is pretty difficult to have quality differences unless one is completely losing some of the ones and zeros.

I laugh at people who buy gold plated monster cables in the age of digital.

at first it was more expensive to produce, but the fact that AMD isn't the only one using that manufacturing process from TSMC its not as bad since Nvidia is using a completely different process i'd expect manufacturing to cost a bit more on their end which is probably why they went with 256bit instead of 384/512bit. AMD will probably wait to see where Nvidia's prices level out at before they decide to drop prices. but more then likely the 7970 will drop to match the GTX 680 prices and the 7950 will drop to $420-425. either way the high end market is niche so don't expect those prices to really change all that much. what matters to both companies is the mid range 7870/50/7770 and nvidia doesn't have a kepler card in that area so those prices won't change at all.

Don't forget the HUGE price drop that happened on the GTX-280 a few years ago. That thing at launch was MSRP of $649, it was not even two months later down to $449, due to the new ATI 4800 series that was competitive at a cheaper price. I remember that, was one of those guys that jumped on the 280 after the big price drop, it was MAJOR news at the time, just shocking how much the price came down, and so fast after release.

Another price drop for Nvidia GeForce GTX 280
http://www.bit-tech.net/custompc/ne...p-for-nvidia-geforce-gtx-280-and-gtx-260.html
Nvidia confirmed to us today that the GeForce GTX 280 has been further reduced from $499US to $449US, meaning Nvidia’s flagship graphics card has seen $200 slashed off its original $649 price in its first month.

So AMD can do the same thing on the 7970.

7970 should be 479.99 stock cooling and 489.99-499.99 for aftermarket cooling units imho.

The 7970 and 680GTX are within a frame or two difference in Battlefield 3 (The only PC game that matters ;)), and the AMD 7970 does have that nicer 3GB frame buffer on THEIR cards which does enhance, and help its position for current and future PC game titles. ;) Especially for Triple screen users it's a must to have more GPU Ram than you think you need imho.

Nvidia should have simply gone harder with it's 680GTX specs, instead they wussed out.

THE 256 BIT BUS ON A SO-CALLED NVIDIA FLAGSHIP GPU TELLS ALL! THIS 680GTX AIN'T IT!!

Nvidia got themselves the benchmark crown (just barely eeked the performance crown and backed off. (If you play BF3 online they didn't do shit above what AMD did 3-4 months ago with Taihiti.) It's almost meaningless imho what Nvidia just did with their high end which = Nvidia tailor made the 680GTX so very slightly above AMD's best efforts. Ah well it's still an improvement over the 580GTX (which is what they really needed), like the 580 was over the 480 maybe this is how the GPU giants want to play their game now.

We all know companies in any buisness are in it to maximizing profits. In the GPU market it's off of BF3 gamers and the triple-screen users, the 120Hz peeps the performance die-hards. It's no dang coincidence what just happened. Fooled just enough to not get angered imho, still dissappointing.

Instead of lowering prices, they should be increasing the default clock. 1.1 ghz sounds nice. :p

My point is, if nVidia could lower their GTX-280 from $649 to $449 in a month or so back in 2008, then AMD can lower the 7970 to $499 or lower.

Heh if you want a 7970 right now head over to the for sale forum. Ppl are dropping them left and right. I have seen them for $440 and less. Kinda wish I'd of waited till now to buy one, lol. I'd buy a 7970 for $440 over a 680 for $499

AMD will only drop the price by $100 if nVidia can keep a supply. If there's such huge demand and a severe shortage (i.e., next batch of a few thousand in another month) means that there's going to be a long waiting game between shipments. I imagine that the 7970 may drop to $479 soon.

Anxious gamers aren't going to wait for a virtual paper-launch one time supply card to come back in stock. On the other hand, if production is good and the cards are flying off the shelves, then AMD may be compelled to drop the price $100.

I noticed that...kinda funny, really. The 680 isn't THAT much faster.

Maybe they're sick of driver issues. :p

The GTX-680 @ $499 is just slightly faster than the 7970, so the 7970 should at least come down to like $474.99 that would be fair adjusted pricing per performance.
