well considering even a 4850 is probably 3 times faster than an x1900xt I bet it would too.I play TF2 at 1920x1200 with AA on with everything maxed, L4D I play at about 70% max settings with 2xAA at 1440x900. It's not half bad really.
I want to get a 1GB card for my 24" monitor though. I bet a 5850 would let me play L4D maxed out at 1920x1200. That's going to be my benchmark (so to speak).
Oh, Maybe I should install my BF2 and BFVietnam on windows 7 today! lol.

even a 1950xt is 30-50% slower than a 3850 so a 4850 would certainly be close to 3 times as fast a 1900xt.well a 1900xt is on par with a 3850, a 4850 is what, twice as fast as a 3850? or more?![]()

well if the new cards are at reasonable prices then why not go with the much faster DX11 cards. I would certainly pick a 5850 over a 4890.1680x1050 with Oblivion + high res textures + HDR. And I haven't yet tried it with my "new" *cough* CPU. I know I'm a dinosaur, but is higher AA a bit overrated?
Anyways, when this card comes out, I might go cheap and get the 4890.... but since I tend to hold onto hardware for long years, maybe I'll want DX11. What do you think?
so when you act like this are you not trolling?Since you are not Cannonfodder you are cool

I'm hoping this card will be ATI's new 9700 Pro.
based on reviews yes the 4850 would certainly be around 3 times faster. a 4850 is a little faster than a 9800gtx+ which is already about 20% faster than your 8800gts512. of course it would depend on the individual game and settings but yeah that is about right. probably closer to 2.5 on average though. No one shall mock the X1900XT.
Tho yea, when I jumped to my 8800GTS 512(a 9800GTX basically) I saw at least double fps gains all around.
Saying a 4850 is 3 times faster is a bit stretching it but Its probably the next best thing if you already don't have a 8800/9600/3800 or above which are certainly not a slouch if you dont demand too much.
Inb4 the lock.
Im guessing 1600 shaders + 384bit memory bus + 1000Mhz GDDR5 stock for HD 5870.
Should put it ahead of GTX 285 easily. From there its all just an issue of clock speeds.
The 5850/70 is slated to have 1GB of memory. So I am thinking they stuck with a 256 bit memory bus and just increased the shaders/rops/core clocks. One neat thing is that it appears to support 3 monitors right out of the box. So you can have immersive 3 monitor setup with just one video card! Or 6 monitors with 2 video cards, etc.

"ATI Eyefinity technology with support for up to three displays"
I am pretty sure that memory bandwidth has nothing to do with calculating flops.I'm betting it's a 384-bit bus. To get anywhere near the purported 2.1 TFlops the bus will need to be expanded, even with screaming memory speed.
Agreed 3-monitor support is a win. Another two 30"s are on my shopping list next month![]()

well the 5870 is meant to compete with what Nvidia comes out with for their next gen in that price range. if they priced cards based on how they competed with the competitions last gen the we would be paying about $5000 for a video card by now.I thought they'd price the 5870 above the GTX 285 quite honestly, cos it's gonna be a faster card. I guess Nvidia will have to cut prices on their 285 to compete until they can roll out their 300 series. And THAT will likely trigger price cuts on 4890/4870s to deal with the cheaper gtx 285. Market competition = good!
A 384 bit bus isn't really in line with AMD's previous strategy. I would be very surprised if the card was anything but a 256 bit bus.
GDDR5 in the current gen of video cards routinely overclocks to 4.5GHz, and I think I remember reading a press release that one of the memory vendors had got GDDR5 up to 6GHz.
I'm totally just guessing, but I would not be surprised if the 5870 came with 4.8GHz GDDR5, 5.0 or even higher.
Since you are not Cannonfodder you are cool
That's still more than enough to feed the GPU.Higher clocked GDDR5 to compensate for 256bit bus would mean more power consumption and more heat generated.
Besides even if ATI used 5Ghz GDDR5 chips that would put the mem bandwith slightly ahead of stock GTX 285, 160Gb/s vs 159Gb/s.
Current leaked specs showthere being 1GB on the card; it looks like they'regoing with 256-bit.Despite the 40nM manufacturing process RV8xx cypress reported die size actually is bigger then either rv770 or rv790 chips, disassembled cypress heatsink back shots show a die imprint thats somewhere inbetween 310mm^2 ~ 320mm^2. The probability that rv8xx cypress chip uses 384bit mem bus is a lot higher then 256bit.
The big uncertainty about the shader count is how much space dx11 features took up on the chip.
Am I the only one who has considered the possibility the 5870 might not be able to compete with the GTX 380 if they are pricing it at 300?
Whats reasonable? same improvement 4870 made over the 9800gtx?
20-50% more in 19x12 and more at 25x16?
Which would be the improvement over the gtx285?
how is this the lower price point? there will be a 5780x2 that will be their high end card so $299 for the 5870 makes perfect sense. My point is just that they usually don't launch a card at the lower price point unless they have to for some reason. Of course, the plan could be to move a ton of cards before NVIDIA can catch up, but I doubt the card will exceed the performance of a GTX295 at $300.
its not the top end card. its in the same slot the 4870 was at launch. the 5870 for $299 makes perfect sense and the 5870x2 will probably be $549 or so just like the 4870x2 was. does this really need to be explained over and over? What alternative reality do you guys live in where $300 is a top end video card? I don't think it has been that way since the 9700 PRO.
I will end this right now, regarding how a "cheap" $299 can be a powerful and top dog VideoCard.
Remember in 2006 when the new Corvette Z06 came outBefore that the Corvettes were cool, but never really taken seriously in the high end sports car world in Europe etc...But in 2006 Gm changes everyone's mind set on Corvettes.
Everyone said no way a $70k sports car can compete with the Porsche Turbos and Lambos etc... that are twice that price. Well the Z06 did compete and actually beat most those cars for half their price.
So lets look at the new AMD 5870 as the Z06 of the VideoCard world![]()
