5770 pentium D

maybe. probably wouldnt be too bad as plenty of people ran pentium Ds with 8800GTs (myself included)which are roughly equivalent, but i would suggest upgrading as that is a brand new DX11 card with eyefinity blah blah blah and the pentium D is ancient and was never really a great architecture to begin with.

You didn't read the chart. :( It would take 2 8800gt cards to come close to a HD5770. Or roughtly one 9800GX2 (which I disagree upon, my 9800GX2 couldn't do much past 1600x900, while my HD5770 can still manage 1080p).

lol, i thought that didnt seem right! actually i saw the 5770 mobility and the 8800gt next to each other. hahaha. yeah youre right, a pentium d will definitely bottleneck your 5770. wow epic fail.

a 5770 is about 50% faster than an 8800gt.

anyway, yes a Pentium D would kill the performance of a 5770. even a Pentium D at 3.8 would be slower than my E8500 lowered to 1.8.

The Pentium D Netbust architecture is the worst in terms of gaming. The only Pentium D that was worth it was the Pentium 955 and 965 which had Hyper Threading and was able to trade blows against the stock Core 2 Duo E6400 in everything, so a Pentium D which has no Hyper Theading should be slower than even a Celeron Ex00 dual core in terms of gaming performance. (God I fixed a PC with a Pentium D 820 and I almost killed myself :) )

mine has hyperthreadhing. its a 950. i kinda figure it will still be a bottleneck though. what is the test to see if it is cpu limited

the kind of hyperthreading on the Pentium D is not going to help worth a poo in most gaming cases. in fact there is just as likely to be a negative effect in games. just to be clear the HT used on the cpus back then is not the same as on i7 cpus.

and the 950 does not even have HT according to the Intel database. http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=27521

and you can get an idea of just how poor the Pentium D is in games from this review. they used a Pentium D 840 EE which has HT and you can see most games are not even playable at all with that cpu. http://techreport.com/articles.x/20188/6

Yes. By a pretty good amount.

+1

The Pentium D is the slowest dual-core in existence (aside from Atom processors) and is 6 years old. It is literally two Pentium 4 CPUs stuck together, so anything beyond that of an 8800GT would be severely bottlenecked. I'd say stick with a lower end graphics card, or upgrade the system overall.

Even if you get the HD5770, you will be held back by a minimum of 60% or greater.

its not just that it will severally hold back the 5770 but many games will not even be playable at the settings you would try to run with a 5770. many people think cranking the settings only impacts the gpu but many settings have an impact on the overall system including the cpu. and a Pentium D will even struggle with low settings in the more cpu intensive game.

ah, I'm sorry for being a bit of a jerk, earlier.

That being said, my friend had a Pentium D (the dual die kind) with a HD4670... guess where this story ends? Upgrade to a Phenom II 955, it made the world of difference in every game he had (primarily GTA4, but that's a hellishly unfair comparison), even a game as unassuming as Star Wars Empire at War felt smoother, especially in cutscenes (he has a 1920x1200 display... hope he doesn't mind me using his story :D). I later got him a HD5850 for Christmas to finish the upgrade path :p

The pentium D will be a bottleneck in most modern games as it's really slow. I'd invest in a CPU upgrade pretty soon tbh if you want good games performance.

Usually modern CPU's are not the bottleneck, video card are.

That being said, this is not a modern CPU.

My guess would be that if you turn all the graphics settings way up, you will not be CPU limited, but you might not like the frame rates if you do that :p

Even a modern low end Core i3 would be a significant upgrade over that Pentium D...

this is not an upgrade path i was planning lol, the rig in my sig died so i am trying to see what i can throw together with the parts i have layin around. i suppose i should try to find a newer processor.

i have a wtb thread and i have been looking for a q9xxx

The slightly faster Pentium D 955 (1066MHz FSB + 60MHz faster than D 950) holds back the old X1900XT. :p http://www.madshrimps.be/articles/a...Performance-Overclocking-Power-Usage-Review/4

I wouldn't bother with the HD 5770 on that system.

Those charts are pointless.

Note how they are set to 800x600. This pretty much eliminates the video card from the equation. Even a modern Core i7 would be held back at those resolutions.

My guess would be that at 1920x1080 / 1920x1200 the differences will be MUCH smaller and with a 5770 you are more likely to be video card limited.

You could always just get the 5770, and then upgrade the CPU later if you feel it's necessary.

What happened to your sigrig? Is nothing on it salvageable?

the rig in my sig died
The 1090T? All of that would still be under warranty I would have thought (And more to the point it'll be faster than a Q9xxx CPU to fit the old Pentium D system anyway). I'm confused as to what you're after here, a second gaming system?

did you even look at the review I linked to? the Pentium D 840 EE did not even provide 30 fps in modern games. and again cranking the settings in a game also impacts the cpu which be pretty clear as in many of those games the Pentium D could not even provide 20 fps even with a high end video card. trying to create a gpu bottleneck on purpose is silly when your cpu cannot even provide playable framerates. 20-25 fps with 8x AA at 1920 is no more enjoyable than 20-25 fps with no AA at 800x600 as neither is playable.

Regarding GPU bottlenecking it intentionally, that was a joke :p

I didn't see that link until after you mentioned it.

The only thing I will comment on is that the games they used in their test suite are outliers.

BFBC2, F1 2010, Civ 5 and Starcraft 2 (surprisingly) are all unusually CPU dependent games, and as such they represent an absolute worst case. If the OP doesn't play any of these he may be able to get away short term with an overclocked Pentium D, with the understanding that performance will be limited until he gets something else.

um you do realize the Pentium D sucked in Metro 2033 and F1 too? again it was not plyable in a single game they tested not to mention there are also plenty of other more cpu intensive games that were not even tested. so no the games you picked out were not outliers. the Pentium D does not even meet the minimum requirements for the vast majority of games made in the last 2 years. bottom line is that the Pentium D will in most newer games not provide a decent playable experience.

Pentium D are terrible performers which got smoked by an Athlon X2 6400+ in everything including games, and yet that Athlon can be a bottleneck in many games today. The Pentium D isn't even a native dual core solution, it is based on two Pentium 4 with Hyper Threading disabled and glued together with some Crazy Glue noname brand. I recommend you to move to a better CPU, even a Phenom II X3 or Athlon II X4 will do the trick nicely, and are very cheap!

PS: That link showed the Pentium D 955 Presler core whicn indeed has Hyper Threading and is faster than the OP Pentium D 950, yet is inadequate for gaming.

lol even the 3.73 965 EE with HT, the fastest Pentium D ever made, easily gets beat by the entry level 1.86 E6300 Core 2.

The Pentium Ds (I forget if this was the 800 or 900 series) would at 3.2Ghz compete with AMD's baseline X2 3800+. The fastest 3.6Ghz model could taken on the 4200+ but would struggle against the 4400+.
The weakest of all the Core 2-based chips, the Pentium Dual Core E2140, could keep up with the 3800+, so you can imagine how slow the Pentium Ds were in comparison. You'd have needed a 4.4Ghz Pentium D to keep up with even the older Core 2 Duo E6600, let alone the newer E8600, which would be more like a 7Ghz equivalent. And then there were overclocks...

I think everyone here doesn't understand that this CPU is 6 years old. It was meant to be paired with a 6800GT or an X800, not a HD5770.

Back in 2005, I remember the Pentium D's getting their clocks cleaned by Athlon X2 processors running at 2GHz on socket 939.

Bottom line, the Pentium D will work with a HD5770, but it will be bottlenecked by at least 60% or more. Also, considering the age of the processor, it may not even be able to physically run any modern games in the last 3 years properly, if at all.

OP, you can use the system as a spare for now, but for gaming, you need to seriously consider an upgrade. I hope you find that Q9xxx processor soon. ;)
