$5M In Pirated Software On A HDD = Art?

I'm not sure how $5 million in pirated software on one hard drive is considered "art." I can just see the RIAA / MPAA asking the courts for $5 million per 1TB hard drive. :(

A new exhibit at the Art 404 gallery, 5 Million Dollars, 1 Terabyte, blurs the boundaries of between sculpture and skullduggery, conspicuously displaying a hard drive with $5 million of stolen property. “5 Million Dollars 1 Terrabyte” (2011) is a sculpture consisting of a 1 TB Black External Hard Drive containing $5,000,000 worth of illegally downloaded files.

Anyway. This is why nobody likes postmodern art other than people who want to seem like they are "cultured" or some shit. No effort goes into it. I bet it is seagate too. :(
 
I don't see the illegal files. All I see is an external hard drive. Sorry, nothing to see here.

It's totally Art, it just might not be good Art. It was done to be unique, be progressive, and to invite discussion. I think it succeeded in those goals.

Yes, this is Art. This is creative and it is unique. Also, I would like to see your qualifications as an authority of what is and is not Art. I think you're talking out of personal preference instead of facts.
Anything can be Art. This piece was made by an Artist and presented as Art. It was made to be considered by an audience and critiqued. Calling it "hipster" is a weak critique, to say the least. Quit being so pretentious about Art, you're projecting yourselves.

See this is trolling as an artform!

why can't effort be taken while making a statement? Why can't something of beauty and aesthetic standards be made at the same time? Is it aimed squarely at people so simple-minded that it has to be so...filtered out and...simple? Isn't art supposed to engadge more people rather than not? Isn't it supposed to show ability rather than be stuff that 99.9% of people could do but not care to? This junk is pretty lazy. 2/10 for the blue light/shiny black. You can tell that this "artist" went to art college :D

If I were to put an identical HDD next to it, but empty, it would look EXACTLY the same. Art is something unique. Why is this unique. You can't use ANY of your 5 senses with it to make it unique.
 
So this means I can go get a drive.. make sure it is wiped completely, and call it art? It would be the complete opposite of this piece of "art".

I could make millions selling a few clean drives. :p

There is precedent for this kind of work in the Art world. It is no more "lazy" than it is "bad". You hold a certain image of Art in your mind that is just not true of all Art. Yes, there is so much beauty to be found in Art, but that is not what this piece is about. This is not an Artwork about ability, it is a concept piece about Ideas. If you don't like it then move on to another gallery.
Also, don't knock Art College until you check it out.

If you intend to invite discussion on your piece and you can get a gallery to host it then go for it!

this isn't a painting or a sculpture and you shouldn't hold it to the same qualifications. This is a piece about ideas.

Not really true when all the art galleries now are full to the brim with multimillion dollar pieces that are all the same "conceptual statement junk. Maybe the avant garde of this stuff might have been vaguely unique, at the time. But that was a long long time ago and it's pretty pathetic that they even bother with this stuff now. It's not progressive, it's really just the same, and then the same, and then the same. "today I made a statement with flour. now i'm totally not going to make a statement while making a statement with orange peel". There are so so so many "concept about ideas" things now and have been for so so long. Anyone not bored of them has amnesia or something. Why does something have to have a "statement". If something was just say...another picture of a naked woman with fruit or something people would just laud it's stupidity. But somehow doing the same thing with non fruit is different? The "art" world is just full of morons like this, which is why it just pays ass service to a tiny elitist subset of the community.

My experience of art tuition was art forgery and having to go to shitty galleries to see another "statement" from some jackass who's entire effort and "artistic" ability went to making a samey statement to the other 3435067 articles in the gallery while people commented using big words and work out how they could change it slightly into "their own" take on this stuff that the great unwashed "didn't get" while circle jerking over each other how this made them enlightened, while I thought they were all circle jerking cock rubbers who just copied others because they couldn't do any better. When I was invited to an art college and saw it saw 4 more years of that I stayed far far far away :D

Understand that your opinion is born from ignorance and thus marginally important. In fact, if this inspires you, why don't you make an Art piece about it?
Also, I'm sorry that your subjective experiences did not match mine. I have enjoyed every minute of my Art education and I have been surrounded by the most intelligent and thoughtful people.
