Hi all --
Starting to plan my next file server build, and I want to do something a bit more elaborate than my current setup (which is basically a mid-tower case with 3 of the 3 5.25" to 5-3.5" bay converters, giving me a total of 15 drives).
For the moment, I'm thinking of having a 4U...
Ran 4 x 256GB Samsung 840 Pros in RAID-0 in my main rig for a bit. Two 2TB WDs in RAID-1 for local storage, then Crashplan for backups of everything. It was blazingly fast, and thankfully never had an issue with stability. Without having a full backup I probably wouldn't have run those 4...
I hadn't, but the 7-pin data-only "option 2" looks like it may be the most compact option available. I'm ordering a couple of those to try, along with some hot glue to hopefully hold things in place. Thanks!
Good points.
Nenu - to be honest, I hadn't through about soldering directly to a SATA cable. This seems like the route I may go - and I'll likely wrap the cable & secure it to the drive somehow. The four wires are in tact and exposed on both drives.
Wizzard - I should have specified in my...
Long story short, we had a server in a rack that was built a year+ back, and it didn't have enough room to put the SSDs for boot & cache in the hot-swap bays, so they were velcro'd to the top of the case (inside). It worked great, until it was time to decom the server and we forgot about the...
I've been following this forum (and in particular the monitor porn thread) for years now, and have always liked the look of the multi-monitor setups with debezeled monitors.
My current setup consists of a bunch of DoubleSight monitors, both the DS-305W and DS-307W models. For those of you...
Based on posts in this thread, a couple additional pieces of info:
If you plan to use Plex, the Roku is the best non-PC solution I've seen. I love the build-it-yourself feeling of the Pi, but some channels (CBS, NBC, etc. etc.) do not work with RasPlex on the Pi, and the devs have not...
Came here to say that the non-K series doesn't get nearly the amount of love that it should. These processors perform great, and have the remote management and added virtualization features that have been stripped from the K's. The only downside is the lack of an unlocked multiplier, which...
If I hadn't already bought 8 256GB 840 Pro's prior to seeing this I would have been all about the 512GB drive. Couldn't be happier with the performance. Been replacing primary HD's for family with SSDs. If you aren't running at least your OS drive off of an SSD, take the plunge. The change...
In regards to the DP to DVI adapter... have you found any that work reliably? I bought some of the active ones from StarTech, but they aren't without their challenges. Where possible I just connect my 30's through DP directly, but a couple of them don't have DP available...
Just wanted to add a couple tidbits...
Assuming your TV has a free USB port, you can typically power the Pi from your TV's USB, causing the Pi to boot and shutdown with the TV power (not that it's a graceful shutdown, but a few hundred cycles in and things are still OK).
Also, if you haven't...

When you say faulty, what did it not do? We've got a couple of the newer Mamba's, and one of the older. The worst we've experienced was the occasional squeak on left-mouse-click.
The newer Mambas don't seem to be as nice on the battery as the old, but all last for us more than 5 hrs. I use...

What I want is a software-based KVM package (similar to Synergy+ or Multiplicity) with the added feature of being able to move windows across platforms (so, something like Synergy+ with VNC built in, but perhaps with some additional logic).
If memory serves, I've seen something like this in...
It doesn't really address the question of backups at work, but for my home system with TBs upon TBs of data, I use CrashPlan. We bought an "unlimited" four-year family plan and have successfully uploaded over 10TB collectively and, so far, no warnings about space.
Has anyone here tried...
Thanks for the heads up on this. It has run across my radar before, but it still just seems like a Synergy+ with a couple added features (encryption, file transfer).
Unfortunately, both it and Synergy+ lack the feature I really care about, which would be seamlessly moving windows from one...
Thanks for this. I've been considering adding a row of monitors above my 30's to hold reference material / monitoring for remote servers / whatever else I want to be able to see as I'm working / playing / whatevering on the main display.
Ultimately I'd want all of the displays to be powered...
I realize there has been additional commentary regarding this, but the more I'm exposed to additional screen real estate, the more I find it incredibly useful. Initially I had two 26" monitors, and that was great at first. Eventually the screens started filling up as I opened more and more...
I'm with you on the SSD.
Before we built a new AMD for the outlaws, we added an SSD and maxed out the RAM of their old E2160 (roughly a quarter of the speed of that Q9550 according to cpubenchmark.net). It felt incredibly snappy. Ended up giving that E2160 rig to another family member...
Wow... I may have to edit this as long-dormant brain cells awake over time.

What do you use and why? My current mouse of choice is the Razer Mamba. The goal was to have a mouse for gaming, that was:
Wireless,
Decently accurate,
Comfortable for long periods,
Usable for long periods of office work,
Able to work for an entire day without recharging, and
NOT LAGGY...
If you don't have any luck with the other methods, you can always try recreating the array from the command line as a last-ditch effort.
Something like:
mdadm -C /dev/md0 --chunk=512 -l6 -n5 -x0 /dev/sd[abedc]
Of course it helps to know:
a) the original drive order, and
b) the chunk...
Thanks for the info. Always a bummer to see tech unrealized that is otherwise exactly what is desired.
Understood, and thanks for the warning. That was my understanding as well. My plan is to toss in one of my existing graphics cards before buying anything specifically for the ViDock.
To add one thing to this, if purchasing a family account you basically have a license for 10 machines to back up to the CrashPlan cloud. There are varying levels of security that can be applied to the backed up data (again, all on the client side, so attacks against the security of your data...
