Best drives for RAIDZ (TLER, URE, cost, etc.)

I would consider 512n sectors desirable for any FS. WD RED and Seagate NAS are 512e. http://wiki.illumos.org/display/illumos/ZFS+and+Advanced+Format+disks

    > My biggest worry would be the hermetic seal. well, if the pressure is the same inside and out there isn't much "push" to get out other than He is lighter than air (78% nitrogen + 21% nasty oxidizing agent) so its low risk, but I won't be buying any used 6T drives from a Denver datacenter :-)...

    Touchscreen Solaris NAS

Not trying to hijack this thread, or dampin enthusiasm, but a headless solaris box with apache <--> ipad interface is a cool easy idea, but I'm not sure it would cover enough problems to be "useful". perhaps a slight change of focus to no touch keyboard and mouse and work on a program that...

Question About Which Chassis to Buy

Don't we love peer pressure? so the debate is 4216 vs 4224 and I second hotzen's vote for the 4216. 1) its $50 cheaper. 2) The cost in compute power to support the extra disks is huge and not needed at home 3) The cost in noise (cooling) to support the extra disks isn't good for the home 4)...

Can a Norco be made quiet enough for home use?

I sit next to 11disks with 5 1200rpm 120mm fans. The fans are silent, but the air moving through the case isn't. There is a sucking sound that isn't unpleasant, but when the machine is off, one notices the lack of noise. I've plugged the 5 fans into the MB, so its BIOS slows the fans by another...

    Storage Watts

rprade's outstanding description of his new server included its wattage load: which motivated me to look at mine which was recently rebooted. (long story) looking at the WattUp's min/max rather than the graph, the resting load of my mac pro and Q6600 PC is 240 watts. So that...

Moving from WHSv1 to ZFS - New Build 40TB

buying 2+8 disks for one vdev to copy your old stuff, then add the old drives plus one new one for a second 2+8 vdev does get you going cheaply, but all the new writes will be going to the second vdev so its not exactly balanced going forward. perhaps a stripe of 10 disks, copy old...

The Treadboard: ATX power control for JBODs and Expanders

If your target market is inside a Norco case, chances are there is already a MB in there, but I bet the PS has an unused video card PCIe 12v plug with lots of switched power. A few rectifiers would yeald +- 3.3v but I bet the HP SAS Expander doesn't even need that. (tape will tell, a job for...

ZFS and SAS expanders with SATA drives a toxic combo?

ZFS and SAS expanders with SATA drives a toxic combo?

Like others have said, perhaps ZFS doesn't lead to the toxicity Garrett refers to, it identifies bugs present in all expanders tunneling sata because it exercises issues more than anything else. netapp uses an interpret card at each sata disk for their sas shelf. Perhaps someone can think of a...

We agree deltaP is a big deal in a restrictive case like the 4224. Most high deltaP fans are centrifugal or operate fully turbulent. Once cavitation starts, the noise goes out of control. My goal is to keep the air attached via large holes. Might be imposable, we will see. It takes 7h32m to...
