    Screwed By Dell

You guys clearly don't normally order replacement parts from Dell (or HP) because this is perfectly normal. For the love of all that is holy, they actually put them all in the same box this time. I've seen tiny items packed, one each, into shipping boxes 2ft cubed. It's a shame I don't do...

Gawker Media Outs Apple's New Boss?

I honestly think the fact that they even mention that he is gay is a reminder of how far we still have to go. How is that even slightly relevant?

Facebook is NOT Shutting Down March 15

If Zuckerberg was really fed up, he's just sell Facebook. Shutting down just doesn't make any sense. I find it hard to believe than anyone would be stupid enough to believe this rumour.

Kinect Causing RRoD on Older Xbox 360s?

Truthfully, any 5-year old xbox 360 is living on borrowed time. Nearly all of the launch units have already died. My 360 is 2 years old now so I'm hoping they fixed the problem by the falcon generation but I have my doubts. Oh well, the 360 is only $200 anyway (sorry kiddies).

    Clean Up Your Damn Computer!

This doesn't look that bad, basically like my system right before I clean it. Most systems I work on for other people are much much worse.

    iPad Magazine Sales Drop

You can get the same calibre of content on the web for nothing and in most cases without ads. Magazines don't compete with websites on speed of content delivery (magazines are written months in advance), price, features, or accessibility. I expect that they will probably die out eventually but...

    Canada is Most Web-Addicted Nation

I used to have that exact same issue, then I switched to a 3rd-party ISP (Teksavvy) and how I have 15mbps/1mbps service (although I actually get higher speeds than advertised) for $54.95/month without a cap. It's worth looking into for any of you who are annoyed with Rogers/Bells shared...

    PhysX: a dying tech?

physx is now basically a physics engine that supports CUDA and the CPU. If they expand that to support OpenCL or DirectCompute I see it staying around for a long time. If they keep only supporting Nvidia cards I see physx as being hamstrung compared to the competition.

VGA Given 5 Years to Live

It was pretty short-sighted to buy LCDs with only VGA inputs a few years ago. Sometimes you pay the price for that sort of thing. VGA should have died with the CRT, there is no reason they ever should have put them on LCDs.

Groupon Turns Down Google’s Takeover Bid

Isn't Groupon's current gross market capitalization about 2B? They're preitty stupid to say no to $6B. I can't see the business model working long term, most businesses that have offered Groupons don't like the idea of doing it again. They attract the hated "devil" consumer.

    Flix on Stix

This sounds about like much more effort than streaming rentals. It's like taking a step backwards halfway back to the Blockbuster model. I certainly wouldn't invest in this company, it's a really bad idea. Also, how are they going to manage to convince the content owners to do this?

Non-Deal of the Day: $700 HDMI Cable

My HDMI Cable cost me $9.99, Because I believe in the goodness of my fellow man that means this cable must be 70x as good! We all must order 2 or 3 right away!

What Do You Want from Windows 8?

Anyone who said WinFS, the entire project was canned. We will never see WinFS, although they are working on something to replace it that may eventually be branded WinFS.

What Do You Want from Windows 8?

I want to see Microsoft embrace .NET and with it a more consistent design aesthetic (Via WPF). Relegating native code to a compatibility layer would do wonders for security and could really improve .NET performance. As you might have guess I'm a software developer and my speciality is .NET...

MS Crossing the Line by Pushing Security Essentials?

Any anti-virus that uses kernel hooking is an enormous security flaw, probably worse than not having AV installed. MSE is the only anti-virus I can think of that doesn't use kernel hooks so that what I'm using on all my systems.

    Macbook or Alienware

If you've narrowed it down to those two systems it seems your real choice is between performance, particularly in games, and being able to (legally) run OS X. Figure out which you want more. I would buy the Alienware myself.

Laptop: Alienware or the new XPS?

There hasn't been a laptop made that qualifies as a gaming rig. The best you can really hope for is adequate and that costs a mint. The biggest thing you have to remember is that notebook chips are criminally mis-labelled. A GTX460M is not equivalent to a GTX460 it's actually an underclocked...

    Teacher of the Year

That would have been good if he had managed to fill it with ... facts. But all in all that was a lot of wasted effort with nothing being taught. That's sad, not something to encourage. I'm all for this sort of stuff, as long as they sneak stuff in there that tricks the kids into learning.

Should I buy the Envy 14 Beats?

The Envy 14 is a very nice notebook, I would prefer it over the ASUS because it's thinner, lighter and aluminum. I would recommend against financing a computer over more than a year. If you do you'll quite soon end up owing more than it's worth which is a really dicey financial arrangement...

    Why SFF?

You can get pretty much anything you want into a MATX system, including SLI/Crossfire. The only problem I have with mine is working on it is a pain. To change anything I need to mostly disassemble the system. Here's a shot of the internals of my system (what you can't see is just as bad), this...

AMD Athlon XP kicks butt =D

Wow, you're all making me feel old. I still have a 485DX4 laptop on top of my bookshelf. Thinkpads never die, they just get so obsolete that you only turn them on as a sideshow. My old Athlon XP 2500+ is sitting on the corner, still overclocked to 2.4Ghz. Man, that was a good deal. How many...

    Q6600 Nowadays

I don't think it's worth bothering upgrading to a Q6600 now. You're better off saving up and buying something better next year. I have a 6600 that has been quite good to me save for overclocking (B3, BAD overclocker. I can get 2.8 if I do everything under the sun to it). But it's a waste of...

Apple Is No Longer Bundling Flash Player with Mac OS X

Maybe they're unbundle the rest of the OS next and we can finally just buy a computer from Apple and just install whatever OS we want. Kidding of course, the next Macs will probably have the Mach kernel burned into ROM chips so they can't run anything else.

    Hackers Have at Google TV

Depending on where you read it writing word macros is "hacking". Holding down a button to get to the service menu (of which most devices the instructions on how to do this are in the manual) doesn't even make it to that level.

What To Do During Tech Support Calls

For some reason I assumed that this would be a video of the people DOING the support. If it makes you feel any better I quite often have to walk around my desk, play with pens or surf the web while talking to customers about stupid problems that I can't possibly fix with software/hardware we...

Logitech G5 going out, what should I get?

Any new GTX 460 owners want to share their experiences and impressions?

I have a Palit Sonic GTX 460 1GB (not the platinum version) and it overclocks to 850/2000 at stock voltage. It uses the same custom PCB as the Sonic Platinum and Gainward Golden sample cards but was a whole lot cheaper. The side-mounted power connectors are very useful, this is the first video...

MSI N460GTX Hawk Edition Video Card Review @ [H]

I completely agree, factory overclocked cards are often a waste of money. I have the regular Palit card and it will hit 880Mhz with 4Ghz RAM clock without a voltage tweak. The best plan is to buy the cheapest card you can possibly find, then if it does overclock well you've got a great deal and...

Dell: Windows XP Rides Off into the Sunset

For the record, most of us software developers would like Windows XP to take a long walk off a short pier. That way we don't have to support 3 different versions of Windows at a time.

    Electric Vehicles Now Have Sounds

I want a totally silent electric car. They don't NEED to make noise just because people are currently used to engine noise. This is like building flat screens into huge cases like CRTs used to use or building a PC into a case as big as an entire room. We just need to adjust to it. Even at...

    PhysX card for ATI user.

I would get one of the lower end cards for the lower heat output and power usage. Physx doesn't require a powerful card, a 240 would be good, or even a 220. A good friend of mine is using his old 9500 GT with good results. Just make sure you're not running Windows Vista because it doesn't allow...

Nevada Candidate Suggests a Pay-To-Speed Law

Large differences in road speeds are the most dangerous circumstance. If they really wanted to increase road speeds to 90, that wouldn't be so bad but saying that some people can pay 24 hours to speed up to 90 is silly, that means they would have to zig-zag through traffic 25mph over the speed...

    Mother Necessity In Action?

The last converter is a USB->Mouse PS2 converter that only works with mice that support signaling in PS2 format through their USB port. The circuitry is in the mouse and it won't work with anything else. I don't even need to look any further, it can't possibly work.
