Check your DNS servers. 9 times out of 10 - if you can connect to the network but can't join a domain, you DNS server is set incorrectly. This is an easy thing to overlook, especially if you're setting a static IP. Also, check event viewer, there should be some more detailed messages in there...
After much reading, it looks like there have been a lot of issues with the Intel Matrix Storage Driver 8.9 driver causing "random" failed drives, which appears to be my exact issue. Each time, the drive that fails is random, and is on a different port. I've already tested my drives, both before...
I'm back!
My RAID5 array on my ICH10R broke again today! Same deal, computer was left on for a day or two folding, then I come home from work today and the Intel Matrix Storage Manager reports a RAID volume is degraded. I only have 1 RAID volume on this machine. I had even aligned this...
I re-created my RAID5 array and it took 2.5 days for Windows to format the volume. It definitely didn't take this long before, so perhaps that was part of my issues? (then again, the drives were new at the time)
This time, I also tried aligning my partition. I opened up diskpart, and used the...
Cool, so it looks like you just took the latest BIOS ROM and dropped in a new version the Intel Matrix Storage ROM? Where did you find the newer Intel ROM from?
Now that I think of it, I probably have an *older* version of my BIOS. Perhaps I should try updating to the latest version first...
I ran Samsung's ESTOOLS against the drive last night, and did a full diagnostic scan, which took ~6-7 hours. It reported back no errors.
Under IMSM it also reports that the drive is now missing. Apparently after rebooting, it's been kicked out of the array. I opened up CrystalDiskInfo and I'm...
Hey all,
Long story short, I picked up (4) HD204UI's about 2-3 weeks ago. I set them up in a RAID5, which yielded me ~6TB of usable space. Yes, I know RAID5 isn't the best for performance, but this is mostly for data storage.
Yesterday for the first time since adding the new array, I fired...
I got ESXi up and running again without issue. I used the mkesxiaio script to create a bootable USB flash drive, which contained a custom oem.tgz for my Asus P5B-E's Atheros L1 Gigabit NIC.
Worked like a charm, and I've got my 2x1TB drives pooled together in the same datastore now using an...
Yes, I'm well aware of the Ubuntu/enterprise thing. I just wanted to test it out, since I'm a big fan of Ubunutu desktop/server for dev/coding/etc.
I already have backups of my desktop's RAID5 array on an external HDD. This would be a 2nd backup, which, I don't even really need. All of my...
Hey all,
I'm in the process of setting up a lab at home to tinker around with some VM's and learn a few things. I already use Server 2008 R2 w/ Hyper-V at work, and also use SCVMM to manage all of it. However, this is a very basic testing environment, and we don't really get into the advanced...
Do I need to worry about aligning my own partitions using the ICH10R onboard Intel RAID? With a single drive, Windows 7 x64 should take care of it - but what about using the ICH10R controller in RAID mode?
Just did some basic benchmarks. Both tests were done using a "quick format" on the volume in Windows 7 x64. I also enabled write-back caching in the Intel Matrix Storage Console. (for both tests)

Thoughts?
Just got back from MicroCenter. I swapped out my 2 HD203WI's and picked up 4 HD204UI's. Backing up important data now.
Now the question is - RAID5 or RAID10? Once I build this array, it would be nice to just "set it and forget it". I'm leaning towards RAID5 - so I have the extra space if ever...
Wow....
I just checked MicroCenter's site...the HD203WI isn't even listed anymore. Like I mentioned before, they had 1 left in stock when I went there on Saturday, but the stores in other states still had a few here and there.
I just checked their site again, and it seems they have HD204UI's...
Went to MicroCenter today and they only had 1 HD203WI in stock....ughhh. :(
They told me to check back on Monday since that is when they get deliveries. I checked their site before I left and it indicated 1 in stock, but I still went anyways since I needed to pick up a new switch for my ESXi...
Anymore input about RAID5 vs RAID10?
I'm pretty sure that I'm going to pick up 2 more HD203WI's this weekend. My local MicroCenter has them for $99 each now.
RAID10 = 4TB of usable space
RAID5 = 6TB of usable space
Performance isn't a huge concern. Like I said before, I'm backing up the...
Good call about the external drive! It definitely wouldn't hurt to have an extra scratch or temp disk.
I've created the RAID0 array on the new drives and performed some benchmark testing on them. I will post up the numbers later. I'm pretty certain that I'm going to move away from RAID0...
What would you say the pro's and con's of RAID10 vs. RAID0+1 are?
It sounds like RAID10 is faster - but does it provide true redundancy? My understanding from the simple usable capacity equations is that RAID10 would give me 4TB of usable space, whereas RAID5 would yield me 6TB.
With...
Ok, this is all great to know, thanks guys. I've read that RAID5 can be a great redundant storage array - but isn't very good for database use. This is why I asked about the HD stream(s).
I'm thinking about picking up two more Samsung drives, going RAID5, and having 6TB of usable capacity. Then...
Respectfully, I think my point is that I don't want to even have to worry about what you just summarized, regarding FlexRAID. Sometimes, I will keep the zip/tar file around - just in case my extracted working copy gets messed up. Often times these can be zipped/tarred VM's set to a specific...
I'm not sure if FlexRAID is such a great idea for my needs. In all honesty, I don't want to have to worry about modifying files and snapshots. Occasionally I will need to modify an existing file, or unzip/untar a file - creating 30GB in one shot.
I need to pick up an Intel 1000 NIC sometime...
I had seen FlexRAID mentioned in a few other threads - but I'm still trying to get a good grasp on exactly how it works. I've visited their site, but I'm still reading through it. Thanks for the recommendation.
I have all my data on my MyBook right now backed up. I think I'm going to unplug...
I am already running bigadv. :) (at least, I'm 99% sure that I am - it takes almost 2 full days to complete 100% for a WU)
What makes you so sure that I should be able to hit 28k PPD from just the CPU? I don't think I've receive any bonuses yet....do these factor into the PPD, or are they just...
Bump to this!
I've been folding off and on now. I can't remember where I found it, but I'm currently using a Linux FAH image that I found somewhere on the net. Honestly, I'm not sure if it's the Notfred one or not though. (the disk file name is Linux64_FAH.vmdk)
Anyways, with just the SMP...
Just ordered an Intel X25-M, on sale @ NewEgg for $219 shipped.

At this point I'm pretty much going to RMA the drive and then sell it. The Intel may have a lower write speed than the OCZ, but the read is a bit higher, and...
Hey all,
Long story short, my 60GB Vertex "disappeared" last night. I reboot my machine, and it simply does not show up. I've been all over the OCZ forums for quite some time, and I've literally tried almost every option known to mankind. (attempted reflashing, jumpers, etc)
At this point...
Hey guys,
I'm trying to hit a stable 4ghz on my i7 920 build. I'm running the following setup:
i7 920 D0 (MicroCenter batch)
Asus P6T (vanilla)
OCZ Gold 6GB 8-8-8-24
Antec 1200 Case
CoolerMaster V8 HSF
Current settings as follows:
Multi: 21
BCLK: 175
CPU VCore: 1.21875
PLL: Auto...
Hey all,
I have the following setup:
D0 i7 920
Asus P6T Mobo
6GB OCZ Gold 1600 RAM
BFG Tech 1GB GTX285
Any thoughts on some "safe" settings to start with? I'm used to Core2Duo overclocking with a FSB x multi.
Also, any good links to any i7 920 overclocking guides?
Thanks!
- Ace
46C is definitely too warm for a CM V8.
For reference, I have an Antec 1200 case with an i7 920 @ stock speeds. My idle temps are around 33-30-32-29. With all of my fans on max, they dip to 31-28-30-27.
At full load, I have never gone higher than 60. But I have hit 60c before...
I had some...
I ended up going with strategy #1. I'm not sure long it took exactly, because I set it and walked away. Although when I was copying items via eSATA, the drive is very fast. (70 MB/sec writes!)
Overall, for only $120 I highly recommend this setup to anyone looking for a nice backup solution. I...
Well I picked up a WD WDH1CS15000N 1.5TB External Drive...
I bought it on sale on black friday @ best buy for $120 out the door. I also picked up an e-SATA cable. I immediately reformatted it the drive to NTFS, and so far it's running great!
I plan to try out Windows 7 backup. Right now my...
Well, it's finally working now. All it took was some time...
I'm currently generating 6556.84 PPD with an i7 920 on stock settings. (no GPU folding, yet!)
What is the best way to shut down the VM? I'd hate to loose all my progress....(want to game in a bit)
Turns out VMware Player 3 final was automatically installed when I initially installed Workstation 7 a week ago. Duh!
I started with a new clean VM file (from the download) and I have the VM up and running now with 8 cores being utilized at pretty much 100% load.
Progress still remains at...
