OK, that turned out to be the problem. Because I was storing the System and User Temp files on a RAM drive, the update couldn't install because the path to the Temp files was wrong. I disabled using the RAM drive for storing the above Temp files and the update installed without incident...
Thanks for the reply and the link. It actually isn't that relative to my problem except for one important paragraph:
I'm using a RAM drive to store System and User Temp files and also IE and Firefox caches. I think the problem might be that the install for this update is trying to load files...
Thanks for the reply but I don't think our issues are related. I'm just unable to install the update at all. The post below yours had a link that might have identified my problem. See my response to it.
I have a new build using Windows 7 HP SP1 64-bit which has been up and running for about a month. MS updates for 11/14/12 included the Kernel-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11 for Win 7. This update failed to install (several times), even when done alone. First time since building system where...
Here is the original AS SSD benchmark I ran after finishing my build. I had run it on 10/17/12 after installing Win 7, updating MB drivers, doing all the MS updates for Win 7 and applying most of the tweaks for optimizing Win 7/SSD. I had posted the result screenshot to another forum. I received...
Thanks for the previous info. I had pretty much did the sequence as you laid out. Installing Win 7 from a flash drive was great, took about 10 minutes. I had one problem with a Unknown Device in Device Manager after installing all the drivers I had listed in yellow in my OP. Tracked it down by...
I just got a ASRock Z77 Pro4-M micro ATX MB and I will be starting my new build tomorrow. First time using a ASRock MB. I have downloaded all the supposedly latest drivers, utilities and BIOS zipped files from the ASRock website. The list contains everything available for this MB other than the...
OK, thanks to all for their replies and opinions. I think I'll stick with the 3570K for this build. I'd like to save the $30 but I think I'll be better off down the road. Of course, if I run into problems with the 3570k I'll be blaming all here who recommended it. JUST KIDDING!:D
I've never purchased a used CPU before. Seems like I might be taking a chance on someone off-loading a bad chip or some other problem with it. Of course, that's not to say that a new one might not have the same risk but I think I'll stick with purchasing new.
Need some advice pretty quickly. I'm building a new system and had pretty much decided on the 3750k. That goes for $230. There is a special, today only, on the 2500k for $200. Both of the above include shipping and no tax.
This will be a non gaming build and I had planned to use the 3750k's...
Thanks for the pic. This appears that you used the Format option rather than the New option when setting up the drive for the install, therefore there is no 100MB partition. Is that correct? Also looks like you have about 10% unallocated space to be used for over-provisioning?
Thanks to all...
@manofthem - Many thanks for the pictorial! Just what I thought it would be. Only thing I noticed is that you didn't mention clicking on Advanced Options in pic #2 which is what takes you to the screen you have shown in pic #3. Is that correct? From there on it is very clear.
I did know about...
OK, it sounds like I would choose the Format option at that point rather than the New option and then choose the full size and hit apply. That would format the SSD but not create the 100MB partition, correct?
If I chose New instead of Format, the above process would then create the 100MB...
Thanks for the reply. Is the 100 MB partition necessary? That is only created if I don't select the Custom option, correct?
As to over-provisioning, that's something else that is hard to get a definitive answer on. Supposedly the Samsung 830 SSD ships with a built in 7% over-provisioning...
OK, I'm a little confused. As I understand it if I'm installing to a brand new, un-formatted SSD, the Win 7 installation disc will ask what drive to install into. The new SSD should be visible right? All I have to do is select it and go to Next and Win 7 install disc will do the necessary setup...
Thanks for the reply. Just curious, why do you say not to partition the SSD? Does partitioning affect SSD performance?
Also, I was aware of not plugging in the HDD until after Windows installation but any other suggestions?
My process was to be:
Set AHCI in BIOS.
Use Win 7 installation...
First build using an SSD instead of a mechanical HDD. Drive is a Samsung 830 256GB SSD as the OS and programs drive. Is there any benefit to partition the drive for each of the above and if so how large should the OS partition be? OS will be Win 7 HP 64-bit. I'll have a WD Caviar Black 500GB...
Pulled the trigger this time! 3 hour sale on Newegg. Samsung 830 256GB SSD (bare drive only) for $170. Works out to about $0.66 US per GB. This exceeded my budget by about $50 but will now have a 256 GB vs a 128 GB drive. Hope all the good reviews about this drive prove to be accurate. Thanks to...
Yeah, I missed a Newegg 24 hour special on the 830 128GB a week or so ago that had it at $80 US. Have to learn how to pull the trigger a little faster.:(
Thanks for the reply. I would really like a 256GB drive, especially since it seems that the higher capacity the SSD is the better the performance. Just have to try and justify the cost difference. My video editing is very limited, mostly home movies.
Thanks for the reply. From reviews I've just read the Plextor M5 Pro seems great. It does have a new generation Marvel controller. I think the Samsung 830 has it's own proprietary controller and the Crucial M4 also has a Marvel controller. Other than size my main concern about switching to a SSD...
About to build a new system. I'm looking at using one of the two SSDs listed below. They are very close in price. The Samsung appears to have higher sequential read and write speeds and higher IOPS speeds.
Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC
SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC128B/WW 2.5"...
Thanks, appreciate the information. Looking forward to this build as I've admired this case for a long time. Going to be a bit of a challenge for cable management because the Corsair VX 550 isn't modular and has extra long cables but I'll poke around here a bit and hopefully come up with some...
Thanks for the reply. Would you mount the fans on the rack so that they blow down into the case or up towards the top? Either way would move the air wouldn't it? The advantage (I think) to the Antec fan is that it would suck the air out.
Looking at putting a system together with an AO5NB.
ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 AM3 MB
AMD Phenom II X4 810 Deneb 2.6GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 4MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor

Thanks to all for the replies. Found the ACK-I7751 at several vendors. As usual, shipping costs more than item!
As an alternative would the Dark Knight S1283V work well with my MB/CPU setup? It appears to offer similar performance. It's about $9 more than the S1283 but has a backplate...
Looking at this Xigmatek HSF for installation on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3R MB and a E8400 Core2 Duo CPU.
I would like to use a backplate mounting system rather then the supplied pushpins but I'm finding a lot of conflicting information on the correct kit to get. Some say that this Crossbow kit...
Thanks for the clarification. I've never modded a case before. Is there a guide or tutorial available that anyone can recommend on how to create the top blowhole(s)?
Thanks for the reply. Not sure what a TRUE 120 is:confused: Do I need two fans on the top or can I get by with one? Should the top fan be pulling air out? That seems to make sense to me.
Thanks for the reply and you're right, I missed placing the MB overlay by 1 slot (since corrected) so it appears there would be no difficulty with the video card.
Noobie here,1st post. About to build a system (my second build, 1st was for a friend). I really like the Lian A05 NB case, mainly for it's size but also for Lian's quality. I'm looking for opinions about whether I will have any problems with the components I plan on using fitting properly. Main...
