Thanks guys. I do remember I have a SAS internal to external bracket left over from my hardware (desktop) days.
I'll probably end up going that route and building a new pool in an old external SAS box (... have to find drive tray keys!) and migrating then moving the disks back into the...
I just want some confirmation that this is not a big deal. I understand I'll see a performance penalty since the pool doesn't have the correct ashift, but other than that is there any big issues?
I'm just hesitant since I'm going to spend close to 2K on replacing 11 drives. Ideally I'd rather...
I think "need" is relative. Without looking at the fragmentation level of any particular file system, the need to defrag can be questionable.
Without understanding how a working dataset is used, even fragmented, you can't really say what is "needed". What if we're talking about a 4GB dataset...
mirrored raidz? So you're introducing hardware raid?
Go 2x3-way mirror if you're concerned about failure. Cuts your available space down a bit, but meh that's always going to be the trade-off in any type of "RAID" system. Keep a hot spare if you can, if not keep some cold spares around.
This. If I was going to run all my apps on one OS I might as well not virtualize.
I mean I could also run Sickbeard and Sabnzbd together too, but I decided against it. Makes it cleaner and easier to use and if I need to, I can move the VM to another server.
... Now all I need is vCenter :D
I'm running ESXi All-in-One with OI as a VM+various VMs performing different tasks.
One of them is a Windows VM that runs Sabnzbd. It downloads to a CIFS share on OI, specifically for holding temporary downloads so something else can organize it. I have mapped network drives, but for Sab, I...
I tried searching, but does anyone know of a cheap LSI SAS2008-based HBA? It doesn't matter if its an OEM that I have re-flash (ala IBM M1015).
Of course I can use adapters, but I'd rather not take up the space in my chassis.
Thanks for any help
(PS I'm looking at the LSI 9200-8E right...
Box running ESXi 5.0
VMs:
OpenIndiana 151a2 running as NAS(CIFS)+iSCSI
2 DCs
1 WSUS Server
1 Windows 7 for ShadowProtect ImageManager (verifying backups for physical machines)
1 Windows 7 running FTP+Sabnzbd
1 Windows 7 running Sickbeard
1 Windows 7 running Plex Media Server
1 Ubuntu Guest for...
Cool, leave it up to Nex7
I was also questioning what the potential benefit would be having multiple mirrored vdevs as the point is data has to be committed, so it would be as slow as the slowest vdev and in turn the vdev would be as slow as the slowest disk
As Nex said, the only way it...
I don't have a zil since a have no space to put it, but there's a question that popped into my head this morning that I can't seem to find an answer on. Some Oracle blogs suggest its possible but I don't know if they are doing it on the hardware level. I would try this in a VM but I'm at work...
:D No prob, it was a long shot, I just had to ask.
Yeah, I'm trying to hold off as long as I can and see if someone will put out some 3TB SAS. I might just add 3-way mirrors to my existing zpool (currently using raidz2). That will take some of the sting out when I add a vdev.
He's trumpeting a solution that works to a problem he's seen. Geez.
You can rail all you want against what you see as the problem, but if we don't have your solution in hand, you think its a smart idea for companies or anyone that wants a production-level set up to risk using a setup that...
No. It's a kernel-level service.
You can run Samba, but in the past, I've heard it has very iffy performance on OS. I've never looked into on OI, the built-in stuff works for my purposes (ACLs/Previous versions is all I really care about when it comes to CIFS)
Cool, its a little daunting at first. I think Oracle still has the zfs administration docs available, so it might be helpful to read that. That's how I learned, and OpenSolaris was my real first *nix-based system too.
Quick and dirty, ZFS.
ZFS "starts" with zpools
zpools are made up for...
By the way, you can't change the mapping of your storage zpool zfs' filesystems to the actual folders (maybe mountpoints but it defeats the purpose of the kind of management I'm suggesting).
My (our) suggestions is to create segregated filesystems with auto-snapshots. This helps with space...
This.
I would also recommend using different filesystems (eg zfs create pool/MYIMPORTANTRIPS :D) for any data that has obvious delineation. And then set up automatic snapshots for that file system.
Of course, that also means this would be a separate CIFS Share (or NFS Mount).
Sucks...
I don't know why I can't find this, but if I already have an existing OI server serving out CIFS in Domain mode, iSCSI (with Auth), Time-Slider, etc do I need to do anything special to install Napp-It?
Should I at least disable Time-Slider (redundant?) or will Napp-it do it for me?
I'm sorry, but I don't get why Garbage collection is a big deal for an L2arc. Once its warmed the majority of the IO is going to be read. If its not already in the l2arc (or the arc) wouldn't zfs just call it up from the zpool's vdevs. I'm pretty positive when a miss occurs on the arc and...
Oh I know its technically possible, its just not really feasible/justified for myself.. .at least right now.
I find myself spending a lot of time on my laptop lately and not my workstation. I have work/play offloaded to VMs on my All-in-One. I could justify another CPU or another server...
Hmm Seems like a job for FC lol.
Can you put Steam games to a network drive? I think you're pushing your luck, I wouldn't expect great performance out of GigE. iSCSI seems more of your use-case, but that's your call.
I dream of a day that I will one day be able to do 10GbE and iSCSI (or...
To see its current status, yes
If necessary svcs -x to see why it offlined.
What OS did you go with? Ever since OpenSolaris b134b (which, IIRC is the only publically available build of OS now) I've had issues with using concurrent connections using DNS aliases. Are you doing that? When...
Old cables should be fine http://www.serialata.org/documents/SATA-6-Gbs-The-Path-from-3gbs-to-6gbs.pdf
I believe the only revision to the original SATA cable spec were the clips, no? *shrug*
F-it, they need to put to market just to put it to market. The tech is good enough at this point, and there's always rich douchebags that will buy something just because its the most expensive.
Economies of scale kick in, prices get lower, more people consume, R&D continues, new generation...
Pictures!
I'd be really interested how you get it done. Inifiniband (or FC) is stuff I can only dream of doing with OI(@home)
I've read a little of this.
http://www.zfsbuild.com/category/infiniband/
Is destroying the zpool and rebuilding (zfs send it out and receive it back in if that's at all possible) a viable option? If not seems like ZIL+L2ARC would be the only reasonable "tweak". Should fix some of your random IO issues.. I guess it really depends on your IO profile (read or write...
IPMI has been a very very useful tool, even in a home environment. For enterprise/data center... its a necessity (ok ok, IP KVM, whatever).
Maybe I'm just lazy, but, for example, last week I did my ESXi 5.0 upgrade without having to drag my ass across the house where my server is and sit in...
