Chipset and video card cross-vendor compatibility question

Much though I like my video card, I'm starting to find it irksome that several things I've been getting interested in don't support my combination of OS and AMD/ATI video. So I'm trying to figure something out... My motherboard is a GA-MA790X-DS4, so it has a 790X chipset from AMD. Would I...

A basic cooling question - when?

When does it become useful to add cooling facilities for RAM? Is a need for this action dictated by ambient case temperature, RAM frequency or other circumstances? Is it, perhaps, only worth worrying about if overvaulting the RAM?

do i need to back up linux swap partition

No. The Swap partition is like an extension of RAM, it is overwritten all the time and does not need to retain data between sessions.

What would you recommend to fix a scratch or chip in plastic?

Until it sets Milliput is water soluble, which makes it easy to get a completely smooth finish and to wash away any excess. Once its set, however, its completely impervious to water. If you know anything about pottery you might be interested to learn that you can make Milliput "slip".

What would you recommend to fix a scratch or chip in plastic?

A minuscule amount of black Milliput might do it.

What gadget/s can't you currently leave your home without and why ?

Palm Tungsten E2. It fits in my pocket, plays multimedia files and allows me to make notes, lists, spreadsheets etc and do a bit of creative writing in a nice little word processor. Plus it's smaller and easier to carry than my laptop and is acceptably capable; I'm considering trying Linux on it.

That would be an excellent machine for my LFS project!

    Post your retro hardware.

P4 counts as retro now? Geez, and it's my most up-to-date desktop right now :\ Good thing I'm getting a Phenom soon. Anyway, if I can find them I have some old stuff lying around... 486, Amiga, C64.. I'll see if they turn up :)

Project "Wind Tunnel" - TJ07 internal ducting modification [lots of pics]

Nicely done! Not a million miles from something I'm considering incorporating into my case build when I do it, to make better use of my fans. Although I'm not sure I'd want to get involved with sheet aluminium! btw, great litter-box mod, too ;)

    Humbaba - new case design

I considered putting this in the Worklog or Gallery sections, but since I haven't started building yet and these are concept drawings I wasn't sure they belonged in either place. At some point, if there is interest, I'll probably do a colour/texture version and another with labels. In...

    Total power consumption....Going Green!

Turning it off is always good (unless you'll turn it on again so fast that the power spike would null the down time). If you have a secondary drive that you rarely access, consider spinning it down. Frequent spin up/downs can cause damage, but if it's seldom used there's no need to keep it...

Another thread asking for help choosing wattage...

I've really tried to do this without help, but there are factors I'm not sure of. So I'm going to list my planned hardware for you in the hopes that someone will be willing to tell me how much power it's going to draw. I'm not expecting the whole forum to rush to my aide or anything, but...

    On-case analogue temperature guage?

I'm not sure where to start, so I'll start with bullet points! I am buying a mobo with onboard temperature detection I have a Musketeer which has its own temperature gauge I want to display, in analogue, the output from the onboard sensors The motherboard has several sensors, which...

    Project Ideas and Inspirations

I've seen a mod where the meters were connected up with wires, along with new LEDs, which is what I plan. However I must admit that I have started re-examining the possibility of other meters. If it's not too much to ask, any tips on meter acquisition would be welcome.

    Project Ideas and Inspirations

Nice :) In fact, I would like to do likewise, but I'm not sure about the outlay for the meters. Also I know that a Musketeer can be desoldered for use and I'm fairly confident that I can do it :) Since I already have a Musketeer (serving in my boring beige box) I might as well use that. So...

    Project Ideas and Inspirations

^ that is a thing of sheer beauty. If I did have one I'm not sure I could part with it. Some of the things you posted I've come across in my own researches, elements of which (along with others) I'm distilling into my new design. For instance the ornate speaker grilles have inspired my...

    1938 Zenith PC

Impressive stuff, slipperyskip. It would never have occurred to me to construct a microphone style PC case. Looking at your site I find I've admired one of your cases - the Decomatic - for a while now. It gives one of the effects I'm going for, which is to create something new that could...

    1938 Zenith PC

Hope no one minds me ressing this old thread, but I had to express my admiration. That is a beautiful mod! I'm in the design stage of my own art deco mod right now, so I couldn't resist seeing what others have done. I considered basing my design on a radio, too, but decided to design from...

    Airtight case

I think it should be possible to build an airtight yet air cooled case, but it will be tricky... I can see a couple of ways of doing this, though. 1: Run ducts between the intake fans and exhaust fans, isolating that airflow from the system. Meanwhile, within the airtight case, use other...
