    Optical drive failure?

Neither work when set as Master and the other is disconnected. I just breezed through the startup, forgot to check, Guinness fog... I guess I could also try a different IDE cable as well.

    Optical drive failure?

I have two DVD-RW drives on IDE cables in my primary system. One is Master, one is Slave. everything was working fine for a while, then nothing. I can't read or write to or from either... Any thoughts?

Asus mobo SATA RAID 0 suggestions

The SE supports RAID on the board, but I think I may change my plan. I am going to keep my current boot drive. I have a NAS that is a complete pain to work with. It has two WDC 500Gb drives, so I am going to install them in the tower as RAID 1 and share the contents on my local network. Now I...

WD My Book World Edition II 1Tb NAS

I picked up a NAS WD My Book World Edition II (WDG2NC10000N). It seemed like a good idea at the time. It comes with two 500Gb SATA drives and the ability to set them in RAID 0 or RAID 1 (I went with RAID 1). It took a while to get it configured, but still seems to be giving me trouble setting up...

Asus mobo SATA RAID 0 suggestions

I have an Asus P4P800Se mobo, using IDE HDs. I have a pair of 80Gb SATA drives that I am thinking about using in the system under RAID 0. I back up my OS, so a failed drive would be a recoverable situation. Does anyone have any suggestions on this route? Mostly, I would like to get a bit faster...

    Home network, wired/wireless, Mac/Windows advice

My home network has been set up by trial and error. I've just gone with what works for so long now that I'm sure I've blown right by best practices. I think I need to get down to business and clean up my mess, but need to know where to begin. I have a former-Vista wireless laptop running XP...

    FAT32 external drive capacity issue

In hindsight, that's a great idea, and I thought of it myself. But I would have to recreate the backup with the new parameters... I'm just a bit impatient at times, and I'll sometimes spend more time looking for an easy way than it would take to do it properly...

    FAT32 external drive capacity issue

I have a 230Gb Maxtor external drive that shows 188Gb free and 45Gb used. I am trying to copy a few 4.5Gb backup images created with Acronis TrueImage. Each time, I get an error that says there is not enough free space. I have the drive in FAT32 so I can use it on Mac and Windows systems...

Or you could set up a Mac server. I did it with a Craigslist G4 special. :)

Quark & OSX - File extensions gone? WTF?

Sounds like the Windows server is separating the resource fork (which defines file type and creator) and the data fork (the file data). Moving files to the Windows server from the Mac is not an issue, but moving them back to the Mac strips off the resource fork. This is why you are able to...

Quark & OSX - File extensions gone? WTF?

Designers generally are a PITA. They have enough computer knowledge to turn the box on and do what they have to, with little motivation to do much more. Are the files being created or modified on a Windows box somewhere else or are they end-to-end on her Mac alone? Are there other Macs in her...

Quark & OSX - File extensions gone? WTF?

Its odd that I've never tried to use Automator, but have used AS in numerous workflows. I've not had consistent luck with Folder Actions in Tiger, but that is a possibility. Try this in Script Editor, save as an app.

Quark & OSX - File extensions gone? WTF?

Same specs as my work groups. Head over to MacScripter, get registered and ask the extension question in the OS X forum. MacScripter Add Extension searches Script Editor comes with OS X, so its just a matter of copying the code into a new window and saving as an application. Don't...

Quark & OSX - File extensions gone? WTF?

What version of Quark is she using? What platform are the files being worked on? In my workflows, the files are only touched on OS X, so extensions are no big deal. You could use AppleScript to add the ".qxd" to the end of a batch of files.

HELP: Linksys Wireless Router, wired and wireless networking

I have a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router, model WRT54G. I have a PC and a Mac hard-wired to the router, with a desktop and laptop PC wirelessly connected. Until this week, all has been well. My hard-wired computers are having no issues. My wireless laptop PC is doing fine as well. My...

    Socket 478 cooling solutions

I plan on changing out the IDE cables soon, I know it will help. If I wanted to upgrade my memory, I would have to remove the fan from the heatsink to get to two of the chips! The inconsistency between the two software apps is my only concern right now...

Well, I got it installed today. It still seems a bit hot, though. I think I will add the 130mm fan to either the side or the top panel. There is not quite enough room under the existing rear fan for another... At lease I can hear myself think again! :D I'll upload the pics next... thanks for...

    Removing thermal paste question

I used to use them for photolithography, metal and glass photoetching processes, they work well enough. I used nitrogen air with an inline dryer to reduce moisture. With the two, I was able to keep particulates out of between the substrates.

    Socket 478 cooling solutions

I bought the Ninja Plus Rev B for a great price from Directron, $35. It came with a 120mm Scythe fan. I also got a Thermaltake TT-1225 fan. It is a 130x25mm fan that fits a 120mm mount. I forgot to get a set of wire brackets to mount the second fan, waiting on those... I want to get the...

    Socket 478 cooling solutions

I am thinking about something like this. A Scyth Samurai with a 92-120 adapter and a 120mm fan. If there is room, maybe a duct through the side panel for cooler air intake. Could the stock heatsink be good enough to simply adapt a quality 120mm fan? I can always use the Scythe fan elsewhere if I...

Thanks for the advice, I will try looking at a nice oversized heatsink that I can put a large fan on. Socket 478 cooling solutions

I have a 478 P4 3.2GHz processor. The stock fan is running at around 5k RPMs, and is noisy! Is there any other fan that I could use with the heat sink I have to reduce noise without increasing temps? I am a cheap bastard, but would consider a new heat sink/fan combo if I could find one at a...
