Oh, hook up the hard drive. Open the start menu and right click 'Computer' and click on manage. then go to disk management and see if there is another hard drive connected, if so, you might have to rename the drive path.

basically I have this standard on off toggle switch and I have this other switch which is a toggle switch but it has 3 stages, what if i just rigged up the 3 stage switch do that the current passes through the middle stage and ill just flick it from the bottom to the top and not stop in the middle.

Try Windows Firewall if those programs access the net. I would also try disabling UAC.

This very same thing happened with XP. Everyone was used to 98/SE, and when XP came out, it was branded a CPU hog, buggy and unreliable. same thing, just replace '98' with 'XP' and 'XP' with 'Vista'. I haven't found vista that bad, its seems pretty solid after all those updates.
