Hi.

My 9800GTX for some reason went pop when i tried to turn on my PC yesterday.

I don't know if it was my graphics card that is to blame or my PSU, but I need a new graphics card.

But since this came out of the blue I don't have alot of funds.

What graphics cards could I get for under $150au that are about the same performance as a 9800GTX.

or

Should I wait, work 2 weeks and have about $700 to spend.

But I cannot get something to over powered because I have a lacking system. Check my Sig for my PC's stats.

So i'm pretty sure a top of the line GTX or HD5XXX Series would be bottle necked.

I was thinking 2 9600GT's or something, what does [H] think?

GTS 250 is the same as a 9800GTX+, very close to your card.

I assume you game a lot, if so what kinds of games are you playing? If not how important is it to you? And what resolution is your monitor?

What PSU do you have?

9600GT SLI is not worth it. The HD 5750 or HD 5770 should perform ok with that setup.

Don't go sideways with other options in the 150 range. My vote is for a 5770. That'll be a nice little performance boost for the 150 range.

I play BF: BC2 mostly, COD4/6, A lot of source games at 1600x1200, I got used to playing all of my games maxed with AF all the way up and AA at about x4.

so the GTS 250 or the HD5770.

What if i Upped the price to about about 220. I can get another hundred, is it worth it to get a more upmarket card? my system is pretty dated.

Why not work two or three weeks and do a partial rebuild? You should be able to get a nice Phenom II setup and a quality card, stop being limited by your CPU.

hint*

GTX 460 1gb

Is there really a better option today?

90/95% performance of a 5850 and with low power needs and lower temps.

I live in Australia, because we're not quite a first world country, we hide it by dumping technology that's more than 3 weeks old and replacing it with the brand new stuff.

If I want a new CPU, I need to get an AM3 system, which needs a new motherboard, none of the motherboards that are available are DDR2, so I need to get DDR3 ram. So, it's pretty shit right now.

Get used 4850 or 4870 under $100 and save money for next system.
How do they stack up against a 9800GTX?

4850 perform close to 9800gtx and 4870 perform better than 9800gtx
4850 and 9800gtx goes around $70
4870 around $100 here on hardforum

check with gigabyte. I think your mobo accepts am2+/am3 processors with bios update.
I just got athlon II x3 440 and biostar mobo combo (same chipset as urs) from frys.

OK, I got bored and wrote up a list of all the possible cards I can buy, Since I sorta dropped out of the technology loop around about the time that the Geforce 9 Series came out, I really don't know what's good or not anymore.

ATI:

HD 5550 $123.00 AU
HD 3650 $110.00 AU
HD 2600 PRO : 120.00 AU
HD 4850: $126.00 AU
HD 5570: 125.00 AU
HD 3850: $120.00 AU
HD 5670: $119.00 AU

Nvidia:

GT240 108.00 AU
GT220 76.00 AU
GTS 250
9800GT 119.0 AU
8800GT 118.00 AU
9600GT 108.00 AU
8800GTS 320 $99.00 AU

I'm Kind of inclined to go with the old 8800GTS 320 at the moment. Maybe if I get a little more cash I could SLI the old 8800GTS and do a partial rebuild as well.

You still haven't answered the key question: WHAT PSU DO YOU HAVE?

Can be had for around $290 online. The 768MB model is around $250.

Oh wow... I was looking a umart.com.au

Is newegg.com in US dollars or Australian Dollars?

And does a workstation graphics card be any good? I can get a Quadro FX 4800 or something for a hundred or so.

-EDIT-

Sorry Danny Bui... I have a generic 500 Watt PSU. It's powered my 8600GTS and my 9800GTX just fine untill a few days ago when I replaced my On button with an on/off toggle switch. when I shoved my PC back in its little hidey hole the screen artifacted, after a reboot, my pc wouldnt turn on unless the 9800GTX was removed. when I did manage to boot the pc with my 9800GTX, it went pop and blue smoke came out.

Ok then, just get yourself an ATI HD 5770. Anything stronger would be a waste with your current system. You'll get a slight performance boost and DX11.

That should be a good sign that you should use that 500W PSU anymore. I can't recommend you get any video card until you get a new and quality PSU.

I can't get a 5770, or a 5750... Not enough funds at the moment, and I just need something that will get me by for the time being.

And my PSU is fine from what i've seen, I've checked all of the voltages and everything, and it's stable.

These are the only graphics cards I can afford at the moment.

from your list, a 4850 at $126 or a 9800GT for $118

What is the price on the GTS 250? And how much memory on it?

Don't EVGA cards have a lifetime warranty? Can you RMA it? Even if you wanted to upgrade, you could sell the replacement card and put it toward your new one.

some do, depends on the model. And you have to register it on their site within 30 days of purchase (default is 1 year warranty)

How'd you check the voltages?

I have a mate who's an apprentice electrician, and he used one of those voltage pen things.

I bought the card second hand for $100 about a year ago.

the GTS 250 is $127

I like the GTX 460 but it is not a low power card. It looks great vs. the 470/480 and even good compared to the 5830. The benchmark of the $200 and up cards is the 5850 (for power use) and it doesn't compare well to that. Good but not great...

Can you be more specific? Most of those simply check if the electronic is live, not in proper working order.

I personally really like the 5770, but since that is out of your price range, I have a 4850 and have no complaints about it. I had a 9600GT and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
