Z170/Z270 don't support Coffee Lake (ASRock Tweet)

I was reading a bit on that. Seems like I'll probably end up with Intel again for this round.

Z170/Z270 don't support Coffee Lake (ASRock Tweet)

I can say that in building my PCs, the number of times I've only upgraded the CPU is zero. At the point where I feel I need a new CPU, I probably also need more RAM and probably a new graphics card, and hey look they've increased storage capacity! Time for a new build. As to the Intel vs AMD...

ARM server status update / reality check

Reminds me of IBM trying to push Linux on POWER. Sure, they're running it and can probably get customers to run on their hardware but who else is going to jump on. Azure can help but if Microsoft is the only one really doing Windows Server on ARM, eventually the economics work out better to...

ARM server status update / reality check

Not necessarily. If you look at the underlying reason of why those other architectures failed under Windows (software availability), the problem remains when Windows Server ARM comes out. You'll have a hardware platform that runs Windows with only a subset of all the Windows software...

ARM server status update / reality check

Alternative architectures have worked well for Microsoft. Just look at Windows on Alpha, PowerPC, Itanium, and MIPS. Then there was Windows RT on ARM previously as well.

What am I missing? Why all the love for mechanical keyboards?

I'm a mech board fan. I particularly enjoy lighter linear switches like MX reds and will have a Hall Effect board from XMIT via MassDrop arriving shortly to try out. For me, they're simply more comfortable to type on - something I see most every day as I type on a rubber dome at work. They...

    BATTLEFIELD 1

Spotting on the minimap could be nice but if my memory of BF2 and, "enemy boat spotted," is any indicator, there will be a lot of humorous use of it.

    Sun or Oracle Sparc processors

Interesting but it's a test of a single SQL query. That PC isn't going to be running a massive database of any kind with that configuration. I'd rather see a comparison to an Intel system that can run a large database and do some real-world tests. That would provide more beneficial results...

    production vm storage?

Not so far, though I've mostly been delved in Puppet work for automating a bunch of software installs and configurations. Someone on the team may have run into that and I just didn't hear all the details. I was the lucky one when we had the engineer on site that was plugging in twin-x cables...

    production vm storage?

It's typically not the techs we have issue with though that one was definitely an interesting situation. It's more things like FIs failing when trying to do firmware updates and firmware updates in general not going well even when we've got Cisco people on hand.

    production vm storage?

I'm curious, what are you using it for? We were trying to use 3par years ago for a couple servers with clustered file systems and ended up with so many problems with it that giving people 3par storage became a threat at work. Yet I talked to some other people that had used it with no problems...

    production vm storage?

UCS. Oh hey, you're back-rev'ed on firmware. Let's update you.... except that will require two updates. And we get an FI that fails. Next time, the engineer on site replacing the FI has some of the twin-x cables plugged in upside down (confirmed later by another tech). We never made it to...

    production vm storage?

Hell, we had a nice quantity of OSes running for a while. AIX, Linux, Solaris, and HP-UX along with the other stuff. Got rid of HP-UX since that was, fortunately, only a single app that migrated off an HP 3000. It's now on Linux. These days the vast majority of my time is spent dealing with...

    production vm storage?

Tapes. Ugh. Somewhere in the data center is a Sun Ultra 60 still on Solaris 8 that runs ACSLS to handle tape robotic arm duties for whatever tape unit we've got left for legacy stuff the business said we just had to keep.

    production vm storage?

I wish we could say that. Regardless of OS (Linux / RHEV, VMWare, Windows, AIX, Solaris). They all have the potential for (and have experienced) problems during many a filer failover. The worst part is that it's inconsistent and NetApp's not been able to really hone down a solution to the...

    production vm storage?

Currently using NetApp. So long as it's NetApp NAS, it's not too bad. NetApp FCP has not worked so well for us. Every OS has issues during filer failovers. Those "non-disruptive upgrades" are almost never non-disruptive on any FCP filer. NetApp's yet to come up with a combination of...

    Sun or Oracle Sparc processors

For an end-user, sure. Companies are still buying those IBM POWER and Oracle SPARC systems, though. These days you just end up virtualizing it unless you've got a highly specialized workload that needs a large system. As to OP, I don't think you're doing to need a SPARC based system for...

WoW; 5th expansion Warlords of Draenor

Anyone else noticing the massive number of people starting new characters? A friend and I started up some new level 1s with the heirlooms and the leveling zones have been pretty solidly busy. The big bonus has been that even as dps, my LFG queue times have generally been under a minute. Took...

There wasn't a tremendous amount to 6.1. They didn't really do anything with PVP outside the typical class balancing.

    AIX (ksh command-line completion?)

Install bash. It's what we did on most or all of our AIX servers. Bash makes life much easier. Otherwise, csh has file completion though it's still not as good.

WoW; 5th expansion Warlords of Draenor

People do seem to have grown excessively lazy at dealing with instance mechanics of any kind. We had people dying left and right in certain fights on LFR this week and I regularly get 5-man heroics where dps don't know to burn down adds, usually resulting in the healer (me) dying. I also...

WoW; 5th expansion Warlords of Draenor

I suppose this is what I get for starting late. Everyone else is raiding and I'm at 606 ilvl trying to get a few bits upgraded quickly to get into LFR. I seem to have had a streak of bad instancing luck lately (I hope as the alternative is that the bads are getting worse). I'm in normal...

WoW; 5th expansion Warlords of Draenor

Well, I got sucked back in. Picked up WoD, updated, installed no mods, and am now bouncing around toons trying to figure out what to instant to 90. New server and I'm debating transferring my 85 Druid and using the instant 90 later on an alt or just using the instant on a new Druid there and...

WoW; 5th expansion Warlords of Draenor

Good to know. It sounds like Blizzard didn't do nearly as much with crafting as the focus was on garrison implementation. I'm wondering if they're going to adjust that as this expansion goes on. The old system was far better than this. I've been looking at coming back but will most likely...

WoW; 5th expansion Warlords of Draenor

How are professions in WoD? I've only got access to WoW sites at home and haven't had much time to research things. From what I've heard, JC is pretty limited (not many gem slots on gear) and there's not much profit opportunity in most of the professions. Also heard mention that there's a...

Google debuts IBM Power-based server board

AIX, OS/400, and Linux run POWER already. IBM is just trying to increase interest. That's most likely where the market will stay but I'm interested in seeing what happens with OpenPower.

WoW; 5th expansion Warlords of Draenor

People coming back to soak in the last bits of a current expansion - being carried through end-game once it's easy mode - while preparing for the upcoming expansion is not an unusual thing. Even with that, though, WoW's subscriber numbers are on the decline. I'm not sure that WoD is going to...

    New IBM POWER8 CPU

That seems really odd that IBM thinks of them internally as mainframes. Now if they'd just release a mainframe ADCD hobbyist package so I could play with z/OS and z/VM on an officially blessed mainframe emulator, that would be great. These days, mostly p740 and p750 systems running AIX...
