i went looking for info on the 965 & found this thread !
i have the 865 micro-ATX board. that one works all right.
i like the idea of having much de computer in a small space.
i have an Opteron dual 175 in an Aspire X-Q Pack micro-ATX case.
the case is a little flimsy - the...
jeez it's like choosing between angelina jolie & jennifer aniston. guess only brad pitt has been in THAT position.
info on the 2 boards -

DFI & Epox got rated highly in that review about 9 months ago.
more on DFI...
i upgraded an Asus P4C from 2 GB to 4 GB. it only recognizes about 3.3 GB.
kept a 10% OC. works good !
the 2 GB was 4 x 512 mushkin level 2, 2-2-2-5.
the 4 GB is 4 x 1 GB OCZ platinum DDR 2-3-2-5.

working for an electronics company in Silicon Valley, we were still doing drafting on vellum, i felt like i was being left behind.
went and got a job with a local consultant who does finite element analysis. very talented person with a big backlog, gave me a program named "Aries" to...

right now running at stock speeds on an MSI mATX motherboard.
still feels good though !
system has Mushkin Level 2 which was real stable in an Asus P4C800
system. 4 x 512 @ 2-2-2-5 with 10% OC.
looking forward to...

in that pic, the closeup of the PCI-E graphics shows the CMOS reset jumper on the Asus, right next to the edge card connector.
for people that do a fair amount of OC'ing, that seems like a REAL pain in the wazoo.
how big a deal...
a year ago the asus P5GD2 was one of the top rated Intel OC'ers.
with the 915 chipset.
now - i'd want something that recognizes dual core CPU's.
P5LD got decent reviews & it's in that price range.
i've tried that. it is fun. i did get electrocuted, with 120 VAC. now i am more cautious.
if you do things wrong and the thing smokes when you're not home, your hobby could become mighty expensive mighty quick.
thanks for the info.
i wanted to use the samsung 16x DVD.
i have a pioneer 8x DVD on a shuttle with a P4 3.06. not stable burning DVD's.
i'd like for my next system to have a real good DVD.
any chance of finding an ATX power supply that is shorter in the "length" direction - that is...
this is looking better & better.
with the asus A8n-VM micro-atx motherboard, a medium power PCI-E video card, good low-latency memory - etc. - i think i can make a real OC-friendly system.
i need to be able to carry it on an airplane.
but not with that power supply, i wouldn't do OC...
once we used a $5000 fan to cool a 1 kW radar amplifier.
yes, it did suck. like, don't get too near the intake vent. unless you're a woman & you're wearing a dress (marilyn monroe reference).
the fan was 4 inches in diameter.
the chief engineer got so pissed off he had me transferred...
did the same thing with an Abit IC7 Max 3 with a 3.0 GHz P4. took me about a half hour to notice the problem. runs OK now but will not OC 10% so i leave it at 3.0.
i have a xeon 2.4 GHz on a Tyan board.
it was very odd assembling it. i marvelled at the technology. i loved the UW-160 scsi controller & hard drive.
but the g*d damn stock intel heat sink did not fit on the xeon, on the tyan.
this is about the 25th system i'd put together, well the...
well, i REALLY wanted to have 4GB of low-latency Patriot or Corsair in my P5GD2 machine.
it has a 3.6 GHz P4 that i have been running with an 11.1% OC, very stably. running 3D studio Max, mainly.
i had some 3D models that were stalling the machine.
"low-latency taste - Value Select...
a lot of CAD programs recommend ATI Fire GL cards.
my last job inside corporate america, all the workstations had FireGL cards.
You go to the Solidworks website, they suggest FireGL cards.
what does the FireGL have/do that makes it worth the money ?
example...
i wouldn't say for a second that this group couldn't help write the spec for a better MB layout.
when you run power in a motherboard, or any circuit board, you usually use "power planes". for analog and digital layers, 1/2 oz. copper (.0007 inches thick) or 1 oz. copper (.0014 inches thick)...
i'm shopping for the same thing, an OC-ing board for the Opty 939.
based on reading about other people's rigs, if i had to pick today, it would be the DFI ultra-D or the Asus A8N32.
it seem like a lot of Opty 939 folks are using the DFI nF4 series.
i like the Asus because it's got great...
Zalman Copper 7000 !!
i am learning Solidworks and Pro-E. or maybe i should say, in 2005 i learned Solidworks, and learned a little Pro-E.
the Zalman is a fair challenge to model, so i took a shot at it.
3D studio max, from Kinetix, has a 30 day demo, fully functional version of Max version 7.
it has tutorials where you do just about everything that you see in the movies, except one dorky looking character or spaceship at a time.
anyway it renders *.avi's, frames in an animation.
this...
that video card takes a lot of power.
what power supply do you have on it ?
i have an IC-7 max3 also. 3.0 P4 but "normal" memory - haven't overclocked it. that system is dedicated to running Pro-E, a CAD program.
it has an nVidia 5200 video card and is just using the power supply that...
Is there software that can check your memory "cell" by cell
- is that the right term ?
and say this cell on this DDR module is bad.
i like buying new computer stuff ... i guess it would cost me
about $400 to see what effect 4 x 1 GB would have.
the system has an nVidia 6600 video...
yes -- the Maya is "MLE", learning edition.
most of the time when i ask the software vendors about "hardware issues", they refer me to their "approved graphics card list".
of course, i'll try - sending error screen images - but i'm not optimistic i'll get a conclusive answer.
i thought...
hi
i was just working an organic 3D model (of a spaniel ... hey, gotta draw something), passing solids between 2 3D programs named "One Space Designer" and "Solidworks".
i was trying to compare various file formats for import into 3D Studio Max, Softimage, and Alias Maya.
on my main...
God, i just had a good reason, "why overclocking".
this is a high density connector, molded plastic with typically plated metal contacts. the bottom has something that looks like solder balls.
the IGES file was 30 MB. the part file in the CAD program i'm using ended up being 8 1/2 MB...
it's kind of like working on cars.
about 25 years ago i had a friend who was a total gifted car freak.
he had a 1000 pound dune buggy with a 200 horse engine.
he had a 3200 pound 67-68 candy apple red camaro with a 400 horse engine.
(the insurance companies counted anything with a...
Thermal Resistance numbers for the 9500
http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/view.asp?idx=165&code=005009
Thermal Resistance Silent Mode 0.16 °C/W Low-noise Mode 0.12 °C/W
God, even better than the 7700 !
any chance you could allocate money for a LAN gaming event, like something with $10K in prize money, and then get Tom's Hardware to put the spotlight on you ?
advertising and all that.
let's just say if your project was a horse i'd bet on it.
you're using a good heatsink and you're thinking about fan placement.
once i had to cool 1000 watts on a radar tube. we used a fan that was
4" in diameter and cost $5K. not everyone was happy about that number,
but they ended up...
the Zalman 7700 copper had about the best thermal resistance numbers, circa march 2005. .2 degrees C per watt, case to air.
the zalman 9500 came out since then. yes it has more copper but that doesn't mean it's a more efficient heat sink.
looks like Newegg doesn't have the spec for the...
great idea, opening a cyber cafe.
yes, you might lose money. but you know that going into it.
my own fantasy is the "blue thai lan gaming & dim sum house".
i suggest teaming up with some wealthy person who likes Dim Sum and might want to open their own dim sum place.
or you could...

looks like the DFI Ultra-D & other DFI MB's are the ones to use.
PS
here's the AMD page listing Opteron's & Athlon's that are compatible with the Tomcat.

so far, the only one i've found is the Tyan Tomcat, where the S2865ANRF is the model # for the version without the ATI onboard graphics.

i just plonked an nVidia 6600 with 256 MR RAM into an Asus p4c800 system. it works a little smoother than the 5600-128 MB RAM system it replaced. i was using texture maps in Solidworks with the 5600, it kept crashing, i was taking the Lord's name in vain, sure sign of a time to upgrade...
to make a long story short, i do CAD work, and my asus p4c800 and p5GD2 both were too slow at times today.
the p4c is OC'ed 10% from 3 to 3.3 and the other one is bumped 11.% from 3.6 to 4.0. They have 4 x 512 Mushkin 2-2-2, and 2 x 512 Patriot DDR2, for memory. An AGP 6600 and a PCI-E Asus...
