Silverstone Modular 450W SFX (ST45SF-G) - Now has a product page - NextQ = When?

Dang this thing is loud at idle. Bought the noiseblocker fan and will be doing the mod in the next week or two.

Turns a $100 power supply into a $125 power supply :(

The popular NoiseBlocker fan mod will probably not help all that much if you think the stock fan is loud, I'm afraid. All 80mm fans are loud (when spun fast enough to provide decent air flow). Slims with 15mm depth are even worse.

I have this psu, version 2.0 (which has an improved fan curve for lower idle noise), and I also find it very noisy at idle, so I'm getting rid of the stock fan (and the grille) and will be mounting a good quality 120mm fan on the outside with an adapter. That should do the trick.

Welp shit. The 80mm noiseblocker shipped today. I plan on removing the grille too, adding the 120mm to the outside might be the next step

Just swapped out fans and removed the grille. I'm getting the clicking sound that another user reported a while back, even with the fan installed outside of the case. I think it is just a sound property of the fan. However, it is not much of a concern because I have to put my ear really close to the fan to hear.

The fan itself is quieter than the stock by a large margin. However, there is some strange tonality to the fan that is really driving me nuts - more like a high pitched whine than a loud rush of air. I may need to look into more extreme mods with the fan on the outside.

Rumor has it Silverstone's update to the ST45SF will be 600w, with availability possibly starting in March.

Geez, you're killing us man.. tell 'em we want it yesterday! :D

Is there any way you could find out if semi-fanless tech on this, or anything over 400W is in the cards?

A simple definitely yes, definitely not or maybe would make my shopping so much easier.. I would wait it out for even a "maybe", lol. 600W, while awesome, probably isn't worth the wait for me.

Thanks!

No idea... this is just second hand info I read on another forum from someone who talked to a guy that works for Silverstone. At a guess, I can't imagine they won't be trying to do something to address the fan noise issue, since that's the biggest complaint with the current one.

Has anyone ever attempted to watercool any of the Silverstone SFX PSUs?

Indeed :)

Ok, was at Silverstone today picking up inventory for our store and was told by Joel that, the best answer I could get on expected availability of the SFX 600 Gold Modular is first quarter 2014. Hopefully before March he said!!

Dang, found where you found the info..

Sounds like what we already knew, plus the interpolation of 600W from 550W+

Ah well, the better they do to make us wait, the better chance they'll get us M1'ers to cave and buy both 450 and 600W from them :p

EDIT: Beaten to the punch by WiSK =P

haha ain't that the truth. just got my m1 and thinking of parts to fill it with!

I just got the v2 of this psu, at idle it's fine but under load the fan is pretty loud. Admittedly, my case ventilation/thermals suck at the moment. Does the psu fan spinup depend on case temp? I.e. Would improving my case fan/ventilation/temperature prevent the psu fan from going nuts?

Just found specs on Enhance's site for new SFX PSUs up to 600w:

Enhance is Silverstone's OEM for the ST45SF-G, so It's safe to say the 600w is the same as Silverstone's upcoming unit.

Good to know! I´m planning to get SFX from them. I hope they release at CES

As long as they succeed in maintaining the current quality of the ST45SF-G, we shouldn't care if it is half a rail or ten rails. I've seen plenty of discussions why single-rail is better than multi-rail (and vice versa), mainly ending in a lot of if's and but's why one is better than the other.

Anyone aware of timelines for the when the 600Watter will come out?
About to pull the trigger on the 450.

Has anyone had any issues with the fan noise of the non-modular version of this psu?

Nice find! Did you have a hunch, have you just been pressing F5 on Enhance's website all day? :p :D

Yes, there was a huge thread years ago, but it was deleted.

dohhhhh, was trying to read product reviews on different online stores. no mention of fan whine or noise outside of defective unit reviews.

Good find, thank you!

Only mentions "80mm silent fan design", same as the existing 300/450W, but no mention of "intelligent semi-fanless design" ..still hoping.

Been scouring the internets for official word on the 600W SFX for the past 3 days, but no luck yet. I'm guessing they're waiting for the official Raven RVZ01 announcement, not that anybody seems to really care about that either, lol.

In related news, BeQuiet just announced a 400W SFX bronze w/quiet fan.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB-K2ScmtuY

Really don't think anyone at CES is interested in covering SFF PSU news.

Last year Linus (and maybe others from other language regions) had an exclusive with Silverstone. It was held in private suite. Official product launches were announced after Linus' video went live. Since Silverstone have the same suite again, I'm guessing we have to wait a bit longer.

TBH, even though I have the 450w gold with modded fan and grille, I would buy another one if it quieted down this freaking fan.

Alternatively, I can just glue a 120mm fan to the outer casing and flip it around inside my M1 case...

Good thinking! Forgot he did that last year.

Nothing on his Youtube channel yet. His Silverstone showcase videos were posted on Wednesday last year, so maybe tomorrow?

Don't think there's a 600W SFX at CES this year.

Silverstone just posted up 18 pics to FB from their hotel room, and the only SFX on display was the 300W. Also found the full-size originals of those 18 pics, plus another 11, but still nothing..

(sez "SFX models -- 300W -- 22A single + 12V")

Today and Friday are the last 2 days of CES, and most of the hardware oriented sites have already posted their round-ups. Am dissapoint, boo :(

I'm pretty happy with my 450 gold v2. I really cant hear it over my H220 with all the panels off in my office. I think it'll work for me until I need to upgrade my GTX 680 :)

Though I guess Silverstone may have made Enhance do it, so as not to spoil Silverstone's own announcement soon. I hope.

Or to keep other persons/companies from contracting the 500/550/600W designs from Enhance and beating them to the market, or providing any competition.

I'd get the 600W as soon as it became available, without a hint of a doubt, even if they'd set the price to $200!

If it was 500W+ and semi-fanless, and available to purchase by February/March, I'd easily drop $200 to get one. For each of those 3 criteria that aren't met, my interest drops exponentially :p

If I'm still sitting here in May waiting on this stupid thing, they'll never see a dime from me.. ever.

I don't think Silverstone has much to worry about competition wise. The industry seems to think anything larger than 450w is too hard and too expensive to do. It'll be Silverstone that proves them wrong if anyone can or will. Just my opinion anyway.

While Enhance is the OEM, the design is largely Silverstone's, as it was with the ST45SF-G. So the question is: why allow Enhance take orders from others, instead of exclusive contract as with the previous product? Well, possibly there is a licensing fee that Silverstone would receive if other companies would resell/rebrand this PSU.

Silverstone have had the monopoly in a tiny market for a while now. If other popular companies would back the SFX form factor for PSUs, it might expand the market. If there's a good enough licensing fee attached to that PSU, then it might make more financial sense if a 'bigger' company like Corsair would offer a SFX model because it would validate the design and provide income from a license.

Coincidentally, Tony Ou recently posted on OCN in a thread started by the Corsair rep.

Instead of making proprietary form factor PSU or external power bricks, I sincerely hope you guys eventually end up going with SFX for enthusiasts market. Our team has been designing small form factor cases for 10+ years and tried them all already, FlexATX, TFX, DC board to external bricks, etc... We truly feel SFX has the best combination of:

Size - at half the size of ATX PSUs, you can make truly smaller designs that are around 10 liters with Mini-ITX boards. The reference Steam Machine, which uses an SFX, for example is only about 7 liters.

Proportion - this is important too because while FlexATX or 1U PSU are small in terms of volume, their elongated designs limit PSU placement in a SFF chassis. The more square design of SFX is similar to ATX and is much more flexible.

Cost - I think you guys already know this, but SFX has the best cost per watt of all SFF PSUs. To make SFF more popular and more accessible, the PSUs should be relatively affordable.

If you guys are going for ultra small design such as Thin Mini-ITX or NUC then SFX is obviously not a good choice. But for Mini-ITX builds with a discrete graphics card, this is currently the best option next to ATX PSUs.

Yeah, but the Corsair rep's reply a few posts down didn't seem all that encouraging.

I read that post earlier this week and got the impression that Corsair was more interested in a completely different form-factor.

I emailed them earlier last year, and they seemed unusually interested in my suggestion for a low-profile, low-voltage RAM kit (Crucial LP/VLP competitor), but they showed absolutely no interest in my SFX suggestion.

really corsair... everybody is trying to get into this steambox wagon and they dont want anything to do with it....

LOL I only use corsair ram back in the days.... i brought crucial LP for my m1 ncase build and probably will buy more :D
