Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

Well if I could carry both I would.
Just tested if you could spot through smoke.
He stood on middle of hilltop, then I dropped smoke up there.
Spammed Q, and got the enemy is spotted message through the smoke.
That is fail, might stop using it now.

It still covers up your movements. I seen games change due to some well placed smoke. Not everybody is spamming Q. The idea is to go as a group of people. A few of you will slip by.

I think I generally do prefer hardcore mode but one complaint about it is that you can't tell which firing mode your gun is in. Yes with experience you learn the order and might get better at remembering which mode you are in but I still think they should show you. IRL wouldn't you be able to see the firing mode by looking at your gun?

Speaking of firing modes, why doesn't it stay where you put it after being revived? I hate that this game forgets everything you've done before a rez.

I want to keep my flashlight off, my fire mode burst and my minimap big dammit.

Im also not a fan of smoke in regular mode. Being able to spot through smoke pretty much kills the whole purpose of concealment. I liked the smoke in bc2 it was muchore effective.

You'd also be able to get a bit more sense of how injured you are IRL. Some things in hardcore are a little more harder than real.

That annoys me. It also annoys me that it can't remember (if you have the M4A1 unlocked for both) the M4A1 for the Russian side. It'll remember the M4 fine, but I'll always accidentally spawn (on first spawn) with the AK on a new map (if Russian) when using the M4A1. Remember my gun damnit.

It only seems to do it with those two guns, that I've noticed. If I have the FAMAS or something selected, it'll be there for both teams, but I think because those are starting guns it messes them up. I finally went ahead and leveled them so I wouldn't have to worry about it as much.

Yeah it does, I know on the M4/M16A4 it shows single/semi/full buy little white dots

My thoughts exactly. I run Hardcore + HUD on my server. Feel free to check it out, search for Outcasts. It doesn't show up in the hardcore list though because of the HUD.

That explains why my custom filter for hardcore servers with HUD or FF off never show anything.

That's cool! Empty now but I added it to my favourites.

Arg! I tried the same thing a while back and also got no results. Didn't realize that any variation in the options would remove the hardcore tag. I think if you filter with custom filters, and make sure that both normal and hardcore is unchecked (so it only shows custom) you can find some servers. There only seems to be a handful though that bother with custom settings.

Today a small chopper (scout?) was hunting me on Damavan Peak. He noticed me runnig arund and hiding from it and started to chase me. you could imagine how scary it was for me. Still, I tried to fight back and after , may be 2 minutes of chasing I was lucky enough to kill one passenger and then the pilot :) Empty chopper landed next to me and I was so fraking happy since I didn't beleive I could survive that chase and even win it with a simple gun:)

Then you have to take the chopper, and go hunting them.

I feel sorry for anyone just picking up this game. Its got to be a bit difficult. I just recently broke into the 30 ranks and feel I can hold my own fairly well, although I still suck haha. I can only play an hour or two per week, but got several hours in last night. As I was playing, I was noticing all the silver eagle colonel players with ranks 40+ and at the bottom of the score card you see all these newbs at rank 10 and under who are getting steam-rolled. I imagine this has to be frustrating for them. I got a fellow CS:S buddy of mine rebuilding his PC and planning on getting BF3. He's a BF2 veteran, so I think he'll rank up pretty quick, but IMO the BF rank system and weapon unlocks just seems so out of balance. This is one reason (of many) why I hate the whole unlock system. I think it would be better if weapon unlocks happened purely by your score and not by using a weekend version of the given weapons you are using to unlock a scope, barrel and grip. This way, a new person can join, and steal a dead guys kit and be effective while ranking himself up using a decent kit. DICE should at least start making rank improvements as DLC, for a price, so these guys can get in a game and be effective rather then worthless weight to a squad.

You can take other guys' kits once you kill them, so that gives you access to better guns. Focus on one gun at first, so you can unlock the sights (much bigger benefit than the barrels, etc) as soon as possible. But the most important thing is to learn the maps, so you know where to go to flank people. Charging head-first into a position is always a bad idea.

You can't be any more wrong.

Right, BF3 is a PC focused game with its negative mouse accel, shitty key mapping, small maps, no VOIP, etc. Not to mention the fact that the developer even said they geared it towards console the last half of development (features, maps, core gameplay). Another blatant Stockholm Syndrome PC gamer.

The balltelog VOIP is excellent. I was initially upset that it wasnt default open team VOIP, but considering the number of retards, I actually like the battlelog VOIP with your friends.
I can only think what a 64 player HC match would be like with open VOIP and someone using the stationary AA to destroy his teams vehicles.

I honestly dont have any need to talk to strangers in game. I only really play with friends, so battlelog party chat is spot on perfect.

I had the opposite experience. I would (maybe 50% of the time) communicate with strangers or other clan members that commonly played on servers I would join. Now if I want to chat with them I have to leave the game, add them as friends, rejoin and pray they see the chat box telling them to do the same, then exit and start a party with chat, then rejoin...

Absolutely pointless and shitty. The reason for web-based VOIP is that DICE/EA entered into a contract with a local (Swedish) developer who chose to make the VOIP through Battlelog. It had nothing to do with what works best, but probably less expensive and outside the jurisdiction of DICE developers (who in the past 5 years have had an abysmal failure rate coding in-game VOIP).

Here's an example of what is no longer possible in BF games because DICE have abandoned any notion of teamwork: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9Huu8moEYg (skip the dude talking in the intro),

wouldn't Public VOIP with muting capability, be just as good or better option than Battlelog chat?

What would work even better would be squad-based VOIP... you know... the kind that worked essentially perfectly 6 years ago? DICE/EA motto: If it ain't broke, forget the feature ever existed and just make up something half-assed.

Yeah that would be pretty cool and just leave the squad if people start being annoying or whatever

What's the point of even using Battlelog VOIP when you can use a dedicated program like Vent or TS? If I'm gaming with somebody I'm going to be getting on a VOIP program with them anyways. Battlelog VOIP is totally, completely USELESS.

There were rounds in BF2 where I was able to rally a squad of total strangers and use VOIP and teamwork to turn the tide of the game. That kind of thing is literally impossible now in BF3.

it works pretty well, of course it has limitations, but its not 'worthless'

That video reminded me of how awesome 2142 was, what an incredible game. I haven't played BF3 consistently since Skyrim launched, maybe a round or two once a month.

This.

2142 was one of the only games they did right. BC2 was pretty good also.

I'm assuming you're talking about the weapon specific unlocks and not the general unlocks? Because there are guns that you can only unlock once you reach a certain scores or level. As for the weapon specific unlocks,
DICE should at least start making rank improvements as DLC, for a price, so these guys can get in a game and be effective rather then worthless weight to a squad.
IMO, you're not totally worthless once you hit level 23 or so. At that point, you should unlock the squad sprint specialization which does help.

Even the base guns are fairly good if you've got enough experience with them and know the levels well. I've been owned by guys with the base M16A3 and AK-74M plenty of times before even when I'm using something like the M249 or F2000 (before they nerfed those two). Not to mention that one of the early Assault gun unlocks, the M416, remains one of my favorite guns to use in that game. Hence why I have six silver stars for it (i.e 604 kills as of this post). So it pretty much comes down to how well you know the gun and how well you know the map.
You can take other guys' kits once you kill them, so that gives you access to better guns.
Yup. Also note that whatever kills you get with that other/better guns, still counts towards those other/better guns' unlocks. Hence why I was able to unlock a few scopes for the G36C long before I ever actually unlocked the gun.

Charging head-first into a position is always a bad idea.
I totally disagree with this: It's always a good idea for the attackers to charge head first into a positiion if you're on the defending team :D

Dice and their Battlelog disconnecting/going down is starting to get frustrating.

My squadmates and I have been experiencing a lot more connection problems lately too. According to the Battlelog news feed, they're going down for server maintenance later tonight (or early in the morning, depending on time zone). Hopefully that'll fix it.

I can't even play this game anymore, constantly kicked while playing "disconnected from EA". Quality product.

Yea I was really enjoying the game when I got the disconnected screen. Nothing like getting d/c'd when there are only 5 tickets left. Grr!
