7970 Purchasing Thread

So this thing is about to go back. Started having driver issues last night and its just gotten worse. Had to return the card to stock settings last night, and even at stock settings I keep having driver issues with the driver not responding.

Its REALLY pissing me off considering theres only 1 driver out that works for it, and its not working worth a fuck.
 
Passed my Cisco exam today, came home and ordered my 7970 from NewEgg this afternoon as a reward. Didn't rush order, didn't pay for anything above normal shipping, and they shipped it out today.:D

Gratz to everyone that got theirs!

Seems the Mythlogic guys on Amazon chose to ship mine by the slowest possible means. My USPS tracking info says delivery date of JAN 19TH! I am livid. Apparently, he paid for the horse drawn carriage option because according to the USPS maps I found online, if he used Priority it should only be a 3 day travel service from Ann Arbor, MI to New Jersey where I am.

Probably used USPS parcel post which is their "slow ground" option :(. Kinda lame for an expensive item like this but if it didn't specify expedited on the amazon site it's technically within the sales terms to do so. You'd think they'd spring the few extra bucks for Priority though considering the value and the low amount of extra shipping cost on an item this size/weight. I'd be tee'd off too :(, sorry to hear it.
 
I went to my workplace to pick up my card. the guy working this morning said ups comes around 3-30.

got here and the afternoon shift guy says ups doesn't come until 4:30-5:30.
it is about 4:15 right now. I am going to hang out and wait. :(

Thank you very much. (I wasn't ordering the card before passing, so I'm very glad they were still in stock today.) Since NewEgg shipped it out of NJ, and I'm in upstate New York, the 3-day UPS guaranteed almost always shows up the very next day...

I'm at an all day sales team kick off meeting that includes a fancy dinner and post-dinner team-building/mingling...I'll probably be checking the tracking number on my iPhone and calling my wife to make sure she's home to pick it up! :p

Glad to see the decision not to pay for more expensive shipping or rush processing isn't going to bite me in butt this time. I was concerned it might ship out of CA. (For people buying from NewEgg, my card shipped from their Edison, NJ warehouse, if that information helps you plan accordingly.)

UPDATE: I emailed Mythlogic and got a fast response from a guy named Jeff! He informed me that they used Priority shipping so I guess the online estimate is way off. *shew* what a relief!

Still, I would have gladly paid for FedEx or UPS but that wasn't an option at time of checkout.
 
Got mine today!

Doesnt seem faster than my (2) 5850s though in crossfire. its about the same.

running 1080p @120hz. No more microstutter, but it bottoms out worse in battlefield3 in large-environments.

Got it at 1125 and 1575. runs cool. still pleased so far.

That's surprising. :confused: I'm @ 1080p but 60 hz. This card rocks BF3. No lag at all on Ultra.

2x 5850s vs 1 7950, and its the same? thats pretty good...

you might be cpu bound though...is it using 99% gpu most of the time?
 
Got my 7970 installed...this thing is awesome! 30fps with this card is A LOT different than 30fps on my 5870.

One problem: I cranked Overdrive up to the max, and anything that uses the gpu crashes. Driver problem or maybe voltage problem?
 
Im having major driver issues. I think drivers are too green right now and need to be adjusted.
 
I had to drop down to 1075 MHz core, 1125 wasn't stable in The Witcher 2, flickering textures.

AMD released new drivers specific for the 7900 series on January 9. It hasn't gotten much publicity or attention (guess that happens when you fire everyone in your marketing department lol). If you're not already using them, maybe give them a shot. A user on Anandtech forum said the drivers posted are different from the ones that came on the CD with his card and that the new drivers fixed corruption problems for him in Skyrim:

god damn, the traffic was hell on the way home. what normally takes 30 minutes was an hour and a half. peak of rush hour and a fender bender. :mad:

at least i am home now. gonna install.
 
yEAH, I got those drivers. Had those since the beginning, its hit and miss
 
Mine seems stable so far in 1125/1575 and default volts. Didn't see any artifacts in Sacred 2 main menu, Battlefield 3 or Vantage, or the beginning of Deus Ex.
 
I'll post this here. I was at the Microcenter in Santa Clara and they had two Diamond HD 7970 for $580 each.
 
Bit the bullet on Asus ref. HD7970. About $700 in EU. You guys complaining about $550 price tag make me jealous! Plan to keep this baby for a long time.
 
I can not wait for mine to show up. First launch video card purchase ever, and most recent at the time video card I've purchased since my ancient ancient 6800nu (God I loved that thing, Ran it like a GT for it's entire life. Such an amazing card. )

I wonder how much drivers over the next 3m improve the card :D
 
Picked up my XFX DD BE edition yesterday, looking forward to seeing how this compares over my unlocked and overclocked 6950.
Also time to buy a new monitor! :)
 
Just pulled the trigger last night on a Sapphire HD7970 and a Dell U3011. Now I just need to work out a reasonable justification\excuse by the time the GF see's the UPS packages at the front door. :D
 
I know this is an AMD thread, but shouldn't the Geforce 780 blow this out for water? Though I know it's not out yet nor is a price available. I'm not an Nvidia fanboy either. I have an HD 6970. I'm just trying to figure out if I should pull the plug or wait. I believe that AMD has screwed the pooch on this card. They are definitely behind on getting inventory out to consumers.
 
I'm getting annoyed. I pre-ordered a Sapphire 7970 on the 3rd, it said it would ship on the 9th. Now they are telling me it will ship today, but I still haven't seen any movement. I also have an XFX ordered with TigerDirect, but that one eventually changed to backordered as well...

That's quite a fun day you'll have setting both of those up. I was thrilled getting my U3011, and am anxiously awaiting my 7970 to finally show up. But to have both to set up together - you're a lucky guy!

As for the gf, just try to hide the boxes under your shirt and sneak them in. That'll clearly be the best plan.

You should probably wait for AMD 8000 or Geforce 800 series or I heard the generation after those will be even better so you might as well wait for that.

Didn't you already mention her how your actual GPU has died and your monitor is failing?
 
Ugh, have a feeling mine are lost in the ups abyss - tracking showed up in town yesterday but no status update and no out for delivery.
