Official Galaxy Nexus Thread

My LTE is faster than my FiOS at home. I should honestly cancel my home internet and just tether.

Damn, $80/month for 20 Mb/sec connection? Insight where I'm at is $40/month for 20/1.5.

Yea :( CenturyLink (i signed up when it was Qwest here), its 69.99, plus I rent the modem for I think 5 plus taxes and stuff. 20down, not even 1 up, its listed as like 896kbps or something. Ive been wanting to dump them for a while. The only thing Im worried about is that Ill be screwed for anything requiring port forwarding, or using a set port, as there are no options to do that on the phone. So hosting games is a no, and file sharing.

Hmm, if only the MiFi modems had RJ45 jacks on them so you could hook it up to a router and do all of that. Or maybe you could set up a wireless router to connect to the MiFi adapter (or your hotspot enabled phone) wirelessly as a client and share out the connection that way. May be worth looking into, esp. if you have unlimited data and qualify for the unlimited hotspot plan.

If I can ask you Verizon subscribers, what do you pay per month on a family plan for two phones ?

I see on newegg, they have special deal going for the Galaxy-Nexus at $189ea. plus the two for one deal on data. main reason for leaving Sprint is due to crap 3G and data speeds just so bad, other than that I am happy with Sprint.

I pay 50 and change for unlimited text, data, and 700 minutes for 4 lines.

That's per phone

Is there a way to speed up transferring files to the phone? That mtp bs is so slow, its like it has to download the file and then check that all of the file actually made it.... It takes literally 4 seconds to transfer 1 mp3 (4mb to the phone). That's 1 mb a second that is crap.

send over wifi. Use something like AirDroid or wifi file explorer.

I'm assuming he's using a USB cable, which would be much faster than any wireless method.

I'm not sure how fast mine transfers through USB, but it didn't seem to be abnormally slow when I transfered a few gigs from my Droid. Maybe 5 mins or so.

I wonder what discount Verizon will give me if I try to cancel my FiOS telling them that their LTE + tethering gives me fast speeds and barely sacrificing ping.

Its slow compared to traditional USB mass storage which is probably what he's used to. Seriously, try wireless it does seem to be faster as it eliminates a lot of the verification that MTP does. The only other option is PTP. He can also try updating the phone's driver from Samsung's website.

The phone uses mtp over usb and it is slow balls. Like 1mb a second maybe 2. Took about 1h and 30min to do 11gb of music.

White Nexus, anyone?

so far ive had 3 galaxy nexuses. all 3 had defective screens (Banding?)

something between glass/screen, annoying dots/lines that are only noticable in low brightness on gray/white screens. seems MOST of them have this problem untill you turn up brightness to 30% or more.

hoping my 4th one is perfect (or atleast better). fedex is getting some good business from me for all these shipments

also,
that white one looks fugly

I thought that was just the nature of the AMOLED screen? Mine seems to have some slight banding at lower brightness. Doesn't bother me much.

I had four of these in front of me at once for a week back closer to Christmas. In addition, I had two AMOLED HTC Incredibles to compare to at the same time.

All six screens have small dots and very fine lines in low brightness or when under a flashlight.

All six screens have small dots/circular blotches when they are set to low brightness displaying a totally black image in a very dark room.

All six screens had some level of tint variation.

These are negatives of having an AMOLED screen. If what I wrote above bothers you, then you should avoid devices with AMOLED screens entirely. If someone doesn't see these issues in any way on their device, then they are simply missing them, not sensitive to them, or not using the device in ways that display them. Remember that these "features" may be more or less subtle from screen to screen as well.

Screens should not have large blotches of varying brightness or saturation. One of them had this. It is very obvious that it is a defective screen when compared to any other AMOLED. It is most visible on gray, but is visible on every color.

Screens should not have thick lines or lines in any direction besides horizontal or vertical (i.e.: a line at a 45 degree angle.)

Last but not least, the obvious - screens should not have any dead pixels. None of the six I had displayed any dead pixels in any color with a dead pixel tester.

I might be weird, but I actually kinda like the dots on low brightness. Makes gmail look like it's on textured paper or something.

And white does look terrible. If you do a white phone, it has to be all white.

I'm not sure why any of those- except the tint issue in the case of a pentile type setup- are inherent problems with the technology. I've had SAMOLED and SAMOLED+ based phones before, and none of them had those problems (except with tint which was correctable). It seems as though perhaps the kinks are still getting worked out of the manufacturing process for these higher pixel density SAMOLED displays- considering the amazing contrast these screens have, i'm positive it will become the preferred display technology in the years to come..... now where are those huge low-cost OLED TVs created with inkjet printers that could be powered by a gerbil on a wheel we were promised? ;)

Haha. Not anytime soon it looks like.

All screens definitely have the dots and lines man, it's more visible on the Inc than on the Galaxy Nexus though, so they are improving. To make it so you can see them, either set the screen to low brightness (under 20%) and walk outside into bright sunlight or shine a flashlight on the screen. You can see them when the screen is off too. A screen protector will make them less visible as well. It's just how the screen is designed. Almost like it's assembled in small patches of OLEDs instead of one giant panel like LCDs and the dots are where four of the patches meet.

I don't know anyone who actually knows about how these are made or I would ask. It would kind of make sense with the tint variations I suppose.

Tint issue is most likely from the screen being pentile - I agree 100%. The Incredible had a pentile AMOLED also.

The small dots/blotches aren't easy to see, and you need to get your eyes to adjust the darkness to see them. You can't just turn off the lights and switch to black wallpaper and expect them to be there immediately. The one Incredible I have just has one oddly shaped one right in the middle of the screen. The other has a couple small dots like my Galaxy Nexus.

Anyway, I consider the first and the third not even issues because of the situations you have to be in to see them. You could go years with a phone and not even know they exist. The tint is just deal with it or leave it unfortunately.

Is it true that these phones are having a ton of problems?

Not that I'm aware of. I've had mine for a few weeks now with no problems. The only issue was the speaker volume which was fixed by an app.

I guess ill just have to hope for the best with the one arriving on monday.

I didn't even know it was a widespread problem untill i returned my 2nd one and found a forum saying the same thing about AMOLED's.

they offered me to replace the phone with a different model but i really like it aside from the volume and the screen problem =/

Got my GN last week and loving it so far.

Exceded my expectations so far.

I do see the slight bands at 5% brightness, but im never that low even with auto on. So no problem here.

I'm just going to wait for the 32GB GSM model; I'm on the fence if I really want a white version of GN though.

I dropped my phone on concrete twice today  i guess I have butter fingers for some reason since I only dropped my old phone once in a year and half.

Plastic took a beating and looks like crap now but surprisingly the glass came out with out a scratch.

this phone is too big for my liking... If i had seen the phone in person first I probably would not have bought it :( other than that though, the phone is fucking amazing!!!

You should've checked it out before buying. I had reservations about the size, but I've adjusted and actually prefer it.

yeah it's 100% my fault I know.. I'm sure I'll get use to it and love this phone eventually

Personally, i love the screen on my Nexus. The resolution allows for a nice usable area... my old droid eris could fit about three words on a line of text. This screen makes the OS really shine as you can really spread out and utilize all the features while keeping things spatially organized properly. Sure the unit as a whole is a little large, but really its about the same as the razr and the rezound. My initial impressions were that it was big and awkward and hard to hold, but now that im used to it I like it a lot.

I notice the above mentioned screen "defects" on mine too, but TBH it doesnt bother me. When the brightness is up theyre not present, and when the brightness is way down, its almost like its post processing a slight grain effect, just adding a little texture. Id be closer to saying i like it than not.

As for the discolored edges on sharp objects or text, i have yet to pick it out... havent seen it. But then again i havent looked for it. If you need a microscope to see the imperfections, youre trying too hard.

I compared my screen to the one on my wifes Droid 3, and mine has a slight hue to it. I havent tried any color correcting apps though, just running stock atm. However, i also think this is one of those things you never would notice if you never put your phone directly up to another one (which is the 99% of the time youre not comparing to - read "blowing away" - your coworkers iphones). Standalone, i like the color reproduction on this screen. Whites are nice and crisp, especially white text on black background and the full white screen on my flashlight app looks pretty darn white to me.

Lastly, some people complain that SAMOLED screens are fuzzy due to the incomplete subpixel layout. Idanno if this is the reason, but text looks a little soft, but crisp at the same time. The best way i can describe it is it looks like cleartype on LCD screens. Nicely rendered, sharp resolution, without the harsh edges.

All in all, im extremely satisfied with the screen. ...and the rest of the phone too for that matter.

I guess I may be asking the dumbest question out there but since I had not seen it up until this point, does anyone really know when the desktop docks are coming out? I was really excited about the three pin accessory contacts on the side of the phone but so far nothing is out. I would love the car mount as well but everything is supposed to be out by now. Or that is what the dates say.

I hear the GSM version of the car dock uses the 3 pin to power the device, but not the Verizon version. I might be interested in a desktop dock also, but I had one for my OG droid and Galaxy S and never used them.

After too much research for a stupid dock, I think I am confirming what you say about the vehicle dock. The US version is just a dumb mount. WTF?!? Like the Brits drive more than us or something?

Anyway, the reason I never bought the dock for my Thunderbolt is because I didn't want to line up the phone in the dock and then slowly push down the phone on to the connector. It's not that I am lazy but if I am going to take the time I am just going to use the wall/usb cable. What I really, really wanted with this desktop dock is like I used to have my old Nokias (I am getting in the time machine, care to join me?). On those phones you could simply set the phone down in the dock and gravity would do the rest. The phone would sit down, the contacts would make connection, and power would then start flowing. I loved the simplicity of that. No fumbling with cables while putting the phone on and taking the phone off the charger. After everything went to plugs then you had to flip the phone over, get your fingernail in the flap/dust cover recess, dig it out, blah, blah, blah. One of the biggest draws for this phones physical design were those damn contacts and nobody is using them!

I need some coffee...
