Hey guys,

I have recently received a "Customer Satisfaction" email from Blizzard regarding my recent support ticket.

But I have never filed a support ticket. I immediately logged in to my account and noticed that I have a suspended WoW account (I never had WoW on my account) and a suspended Starcraft 2 account. I played SC2 when it came out a year ago, and never again. The only conclusion that I could make is that someone has been using my account. I emailed Blizzard right away, explaining the whole situation. I mentioned that I do not own WoW and that my SC2 account needs to be unlocked. The customer support promptly removed WoW and has directed me to Blizzard media replacement to obtain my CD key back.

Soon enough I received an email stating that they need a picture of the CD key as the proof of purchase. I purchased the game over a year ago, and I no longer have the box. I have thrown it out during this last summer when I was moving out from my college apartment. And so I explained the situation that I do not have it anymore.

I received an email that my SC2 CD key has been removed.

I tried to appeal but I only get a generic response:

Greetings,

This notification is to inform you that the SC2 key registered to this Battle.net account has been disabled and removed.

In the future, should you wish to play this game title from your battle.net account, you will need to add a new CD key to your account.

Thank you for your understanding. "

Which explain absolutely nothing.

I don't know why Blizzard took possession of the CD key.
I don't know why Blizzard removed my CD key.
And I only get generic replies from them.

Awesome guys. Great company this Blizzard is. Always been a fan, but not anymore.

I've always been a fan of Steam and Steam like services - such as Battle.net (today it's very much like it....). But this situation makes me really rethink if I want my games and CD keys on the internet. Bad idea.

Oh, and please don't throw at me "your password was too weak and you got hacked bs". It was plenty secure.

You say that you received an email. Have you actually tried to play the game or checked your B.net account? I know this seems like an obvious question, but it's extremely common to get fake phishing emails telling you things about your account and including fake links to their websites. I get them all the time, WoW account suspended, Diablo 3 beta invitation, Heart of the Swarm beta, so on and so forth. It's quite funny because my B.net account isn't even associated with that email.

You should probably read the whole post before responding.

You can try calling them. Be prepared to be on hold for a year because I think they only have one person handling their phone service lol. That or send another petition and hope you get somebody else to respond.

You are going to need to call them and explain the whole thing. You account was definitively compromised. this kind of stuff does not happen on accident :(

It happens to me too... Somehow my account was hacked, no clue how that happens..

You have to call them up, and they will unlock it for you...

You have one recourse open to you. Sue the fuckers in small claims court.

Well he can't unless he has proof that he bought the game. If he had proof that he bought the game, he'd be able to provide that evidence to Blizzard. Since his account was compromised and banned, and he asked that they look into it, they did what seems to be common sense: removed the banned games that he can't prove are his.

1. try a copy of the sales receipt/CC statement and see if that's sufficient proof
and
2. be thankful that your account is back in good standing. I know that probably stings, but they don't have to do that and Valve would tell you to suck it while locking your entire account down.
and
3. other than the principle, try not to care so much given that you haven't played it in over a year. I know this sucks, but not as much as giving yourself stress over $60 bucks that will in the end knock off hours or days of your lifespan.

number 2 is exactly what happened to my main steam account. lost all my games in the process and is why i don't use them anymore. not going to allow it to happen a second time.

Another thing to consider is to add an authenticator to your account.

If you don't have an authenticator, make sure to get one and add it to your account. I had my battle.net account hacked even with a secure password that I never used anywhere. It wasn't phished and the wow account had been inactive for well over a year when someone got into it added a cc and started farming gold using my character.

Inconceivable

I keep seeing these one word replies that quote a full post. Is this a new meme or something? Whatever it is it contributes nothing to the thread and needlessly makes the page longer.

you got hacked. dont open emails from "blizzard" as they only email you if you contact them first.

this is 100% your fault and not blizzard so call them and get it fixed.

And THAT folks, is why always on DRM sucks, remember this.

This has nothing to do with always on DRM. He got hacked.

Happened to me before I got a Blizzard authenticator too. After being on hold with Blizzard for a long time, they made it right, and I discovered the Chinese had been powerleveling some WoW toons on my account. Then, I got an authenticator.

Yes.

I honestly get about 3-9 Battle.net phishing emails per day.

I played WoW for 20 minutes on a trial when it first came out - couldn't stand it and deleted it.

I also have the old SC and Diablo games in my Blizzard account, but I *never* play them - still, crazy crazy volumes of phishing attempts.

Also, not to change the subject, but I played Rift for a couple months, then cancelled, then renewed for a month, then cancelled again. What was crazy was that I would get tons of phishing emails while my account was active, but few, if any when I was inactive. Very suspicious and I don't trust Trionworlds system.

You battle net account got compromised and they probably used a stolen credit card number to buy WoW and/or WoW game time. When the owner of the stolen card disputes the charges bad things happen to your account because of lack of payment.

You should be able to get this resolved in your favor but I've read lots of horror stories of spending days of emails and lots of phone calls before things get returned to normal.

they removed the WoW. he doesn't play WoW.

he plays SC2. after removing WoW, they decided they want to check if his SC2 was real. he didn't have a photocopy. they deleted his serial. he can't play online anymore.

how is this his fault? his sc2 account wasn't being used, someone was just playing WoW on his battle.net. it makes no sense for blizzard to delete the sc2 account, and it doesn't matter if he got hacked, the only reason they deleted his sc2 serial was just a random check on their part to make sure all of his games weren't stolen. the whole point of battle.net is to register your serials so you don't have to keep the dvd and you can later download the game. and even if he had kept the box, Blizzard could have just deleted his serial because fuck you that's why and all of his games would be invalid due to someone adding a WoW account to his battle.net account.

And THAT folks, is why always on DRM sucks, remember this.
lmfao
what does this have to do with drm please do tell.

its an online game, requires bnet. don't see this as a drm issue one bit.
his account was hacked. totally different.

When I got my WoW account suspended (after not playing it for over a year) I called Blizzard and they verified that some asswipe with a Chinese IP address logged into my account. I filled out a simple form, e-mailed it, and my account was restored. I imagine they can do the same for you.

When my account got hacked something similar happened, I had a WoW account attached (and I never owned WoW) which was suspended. When I emailed them they took care of the whole thing and recommended I add an authenticator to my account. Did so and haven't looked back.

1. if he doesn't have it who cares. the whole point of battle.net is to register your serial there and then never worry about it beyond that. blizzard has no proof the game is stolen, only proof that the WoW account is stolen and they deleted it. the SC2 account has no impact on any of this.
2. you don't even know if he has any other games. if sc2 was his only game, what good is an empty battle.net account?
3. this is bullshit and you know it. how is "you haven't even played that much" a valid reason to not be upset a game company invalidated a product from him. that serial should work for life, not whenever blizzard decides to accuse you of stealing a game.

And THAT folks, is why always on DRM sucks, remember this.

This doesn't even make any sense... 0/10 fail troll is fail.

As to the OP; Like others have said, shouldn't have trashed the retail copy and there's not much you can expect them to do when you have no proof of the cd key being yours/you being the one who bought it and not the one who hacked it.

For starters, he can't play Starcraft 2 now, right? I mean, he hasn't played it in a year anyway, but IIRC his cd-key is tied to his banned b.net account. His license is still legit; I bet if he contacted Blizzard they could set him up on a new account.

You will get a lot farther if you take the "have mercy on me for the great calamity that has befallen your hapless customer" approach than if you just go full on rage monster.

Well, I can see that the point went over your head, so let me break it down for you. He has the game tied to his account right? So he gets banned, right? Well he paid $60 for the game, and he can't play a game he legally bought and paid for.

Now, if it worked like WC3, you could sign up with multiple accounts, and if one gets banned, you can still keep playing.

if he still had a copy of the game he bought he'd be playing it and this post wouldn't exist. the fact that it's tied to an online account is a convenience that was abused by a hacker, if he calls blizzard and waits forever on customer support he'll more than likely get his game back

in short, he bought a game and threw it away (lost it, whatever) - if it wasn't for "always on DRM" as you say he wouldn't even have a chance of getting it back at all

Translation: roll over and die and let the scum steal your money.

blizzard accounts are always getting hacked because of how popular it is. Who knows your email account might of been hacked that was assigned to your blizz account which in return caused it to get banned.

Blizz will normally restore your accounts if it been found you have been hacked. My cousin would always get hacked and I'd help him get his wow account restored. I finally gave up because he can't keep his email secure.

Now, if it worked like WC3, you could sign up with multiple accounts, and if one gets banned, you can still keep playing.

Aaand this is why hacking is so prevalent in Diablo 2, Starcraft and WC3.

The question remains, why would you throw out your physical CDs?

lmfao

Sigh, because if it did not tie to an acct with drm he could use the disc and key, then be back running. You really don't get it?

If he didn't throw the discs away he'd be playing now. And I get it, battle.net is not the reason he isn't playing his game now though. his account was hacked, the same shit could have happened with steam/origin and anything else you use. Offline mode is possible without battle.net as well. If battle.net in itself was drm, offline mode would not be possible.

Battle.net is DRM in it's current state. You have to sign in to play single player. And the logic that if he had the discs he would be playing now is flawed in that in its purest form, having the disks isn't the requirement to be able to play the game, having the game in your account is the requirement. Buying a game for $60 that is supposed to be yours and then having it taken away by Blizzard at its whim? Shit like that shouldn't fly.
