Starcraft II

I do kinda wish they'd implement more "rocks" in team map games, as the game itself does not seem to be balanced around combined rushes. This would help the arranged vs. random scenario some what as well, since combined rush AT vs. RT is just lol, no idea how to stop that.

That would just break reaper play even more.

Half the time when I play 3v3 or 4v4 all I do is mess around with either a canon rush or mass reapers. Mass reapers on 3v3 is actually really fun, especially if you split them into two groups and attack at opposite ends of the base. People often rage quit when you pull that off successfully.

water around cliffs? I noticed a few maps have a "anti reaper" zone where reapers cannot easily jump upto.

If blizzard really wanted to shutdown reaper play they wouldn't have added that god forsaken unit into the game.

Every map is 'reaperable' as far as I can tell. If not every spawn in team games, at least 1 or 2 on teach team.

BTW, I play terran in all my diamond 3v3 / 4v4 teams... and guess what I do every game. It's pretty disgusting how well it works and how a lot of my games comes down to "who wins the reaper fight".

+1.

Reapers are so ... lame...

Hacks are very common in ladder nowadays... Typical for Blizzard games.

Yep. I watch just about every replay of every match I play even when I win. Not only to see where my mistakes were but to see what the other guy was doing. It's very easy to tell if the person is a map hacker.

Luckily I haven't come across any hackers yet. I haven't had any losses that looked weird during replay. Most of my losses are vs Zerg and I just flat out suck against Zerg. :p

EDIT: New hack out and about. This one is kind of cool lmao.

lol. thats a neat one. I dont blame people for coming up with this stuff unless its using 3rd party software. Game companies dont beta test anymore worth a damn and it shows.

In fairness to Blizzard they beta tested this game pretty extensively and all the testing in the world won't stop hackers from finding ways to cheat.

I don't think you can really blame Blizzard for the hacks as in this case they are a victim of their own success. All the major popular online titles are full of hacks as far as I know. You also have the added issue in a rts game where the connections are peer 2 peer to more of a degree then centrally hosted fps games. If you want them to take a very harsh stance to combat this, then you also run the risk of false positives, which would be frowned upon as well (if not more so).

I played StarCraft and Diablo years ago and loved it and became a fan of Blizzard but didn't get into the whole WoW craze. As such I haven't deal with them for 5 plus years, and I was in for a rude awakening when I set up my account.

First I have to give my name and address and phone number to sign up? I've never have to do that for a game and it made me feel a bit uncomfortable.

Second, I get one account, that's understandable. But then I realized I only get one profile too, that really pissed me off. At first I didn't understand why they would do this but then I realized it's a money grab. They don't want people in the same house creating multiple profile and playing on one CD key. I can't create new profile, I can't change the profile name unless I pay them! What made it worst is there were no warning when I created my profile that there is only one profile and it will be my permanent one, so when I made the profile I thought it was for single player so I gave it a generic name.

I haven't even play one minute of StarCraft 2 yet but I'm soured of the experience and of Blizzard as a company already. That was some shady shit, so fuck you Blizzard. I was really looking forward to Diablo 3 but I won't be buying it now. You would probably get to choose one class at the start and have to pay them if you want a different one.

I just bought the digital copy and it's downloading ridiculously slow. I even port forwarded and added all the downloader ports to the firewall exception list. Still downloading at a quarter of what it should. With all the money they make they should have some massive servers to handle this.

and Blizzard has already announced that they will be providing all the people who can't read with one free name change.

Try disabling peer-to-peer. It will most likely speed way up. That's worked for myself and all my friends.

For whatever reason it's going slower that way. I also thought it was tax free, the total said 59.99 on the website, then they charged me $65 and change. Should have just gotten it at Best Buy then.

If there is either an Activision or Blizzard office in your state... then tax will apply.

I think... :p

I was really surprised I was able to snag 'huxley' for my bnet account, other huxley's everywhere be jealous rawrrrr

yes, where in the process did you get the screen from? I exited the game the first time I tried to set up so I might have missed it. When I started the game again the next day, I didn't remember anything like that except a blue screen with a box in the middle to enter my screen name. I've been searching so I know about the one free name change, still think it's bullshit that you can't create more than one, or delete or change name for free though.

The name are not unique. I accidentally chose a generic name so I'm like version #580 of my nick name.

Blizz office is located in Irvine, so if that fela is located in CA, yes.

Nope, located in WA. Oh well, another ~2 hrs I shall enjoy the game.

edit: they have a studio in WA, so I guess that counts.

When you first load up, it's to the left of where you enter your login info. The number doesn't mean you are #580. Everyone (even unique nicknames) are assigned a character number.

They use bittorrent to send their software, and it's set up to max out your upload, thereby crippling your connection. You can use a program like NetLimiter to nullify this effect.

I'm pretty sure that duplicate nicknames are allowed. Your unique identifier is what makes you unique. It's a 3 digit number.

I had a decent download speed when I bought it, but I believe ya... I've played WoW and the updates took forever.

I think they could be 4 digits also.

It's not really a version #, it's just a random ID #. My name is 'unique' in that I haven't seen anyone else with it on sc2ranks.com (searching for "exact match"), but I still have a ID # of 265.

It was really funny in one game where we had two people on different teams with the same name.

Alternatively, just turn off "peer to peer" and use their FTP servers. That's what I do since my Upload speed is a paltry 512kbps so it gets saturated immediately.

Man, I love using the YABOT maps for improving my build orders mid game I don't have that large gaping hole from transitioning to tier 1 to tier 3 if a push fails.

On a unrelated note, does the matchmaking system work by pairing yourelf with other players in your division? if this is the case, I could look up their previous matches and view their build order history and see what their openings look like.

You just need to really exploit some issues with how the AI thinks, and there are several possibilities.

One is to do "cheese" rushes. Personally I found spine crawler rushes (so all zerg) worked the best. If you hide this behind the correct gaps in mineral patches, what happens is the AI drones all get stuck in the gap, so only 1 can hit your building spine crawler at a time. This of course is not enough to kill it before it builds.

Another is to realize the fact that the AI tends not to mass air units. Pick a map with islands, hide on it and build an end game force. While some might say Protoss due to cannons for defense, I personally found Terran easier to work with. Especially since the tanks in siege mode can actually hit there massed ground units trying to attack your island. Also Battlecruisers are really the best end game mass unit in my opinion for this. Personally I used the map Dig Site, as the islands have high mineral deposits, and the tanks can range onto their units from the island. This also seems to work best against a Zerg AI from my experience.

The third way is to take advantage of the fact that the AI tends to mass all together, and defend very conservatively. Basically it will (even on insane) pull back its entire army from your base (if its attacking it) and rush back to defend if any one of its team is under heavy attack. A mobile fast air force can be used to take advantage of this, simply constantly attack in and out as the AI army runs back and forth. It will give you time to build up, and you will eventually wear down there structures/resources. I also managed to do this while spam warping in zealots using a few well placed pylons. Of course a very large wide open map that is hard to land units to move around in is best for this.

Personally I did the 1v4 very hard on extinction (the beta 4v4 map). I cannon rushed two of them (think efficiency in this case... I used a single cannon on one computer and 2 on another with 2 pylons total). This effectively took them out as they lost their nexus and never rebuilt it. So from there it was a 1v2. I rushed warp prism at the same time and evacuated my main as the other two computers counter attacked me. I rebuilt my base on the island and got void rays out.

Literally, all you need is a single air unit to keep the entire AI army pre-occupied. They are HORRIBLE at dealing with harassment and splitting their army. They will respond to a single void ray with their entire army even if most of it can't attack air. They'll be two yards from your unprotected base and literally run all the way back if your air unit starts attacking their base. I've won so many games against insane AI from killing all of their buildings and not even engaging their army by doing hit and run with air.

Floating off to an island at the very start (the lava map with the two islands) is a good strategy... but I found that fighting 4 armies is tough no matter what. You could always float off and then go with a banshee harassment strategy instead of mass battlecruisers.

Also, islands are a bit of a hit or miss if you don't massively fortify them. Sometimes the AI will pull a mass doom drop out of nowhere (very quickly as well)... and sometimes they'll go brain dead and have no idea how to attack you on the island.

Thanks guys! Haven't checked here in a few days as I'm busy getting things together for this weekend's bachelor party in Vegas, but I'll definitely look into these strategies when I get back.

Grrr. Damned terrans and their giant ass spaceships. Is there any decent zerg defense against mass terran battlecruisers? I tried everything, anti aircraft, mass air units. Nothing seemed to work. It was 4v4 and I killed off the zerg opponent near the begining, but after 30 minutes there was a huge fleet of around 20 (maybe more about 30) battlecruisers. I attacked them with fully upgraded air units (about 10 Mutalisks and 20 Corruptors) and they didn't even kill one. The 6 air defense turrets I built in the meantime all got killed without destroying one either.

Mass BCs??

#1 Don't let the game get to that point, to get a good BC queue going you need at least 3 full expansions.

The natural counter for BCs would be hydras or corruptors and you should be able to get them out quicker than the BCs. Rememeber an upgraded 200 terran army with the right units will always outpower a 200 Zerg army so you really need to out macro him.

My biggest problem with SC right now that protoss base cheese and fucking worker rushes.. gets me everytime :(

I tried not to, but I had a zerg vs zerg battle that was pretty bloody. By the time i'd destroyed their bases I had 2 ultralisks and a corruptor. The other player on my team (terran) is a defensive player and was amassing things (I think) i'm not really sure. The terran player was harrasing them. It was one of the maps with a circle type layout so youd have to go through one base to get to the other. After i'd done one base, the mass BCs apppeared and steamrolled everything. I've been winning pretty constantly lately so I think i've got soft...Zerg units are very fragile. Mass ultralisks and broodlords is always fun. But, I think I really need to work on my air defense. Also as you said, not holding back so long. Working boards a calling.

I dislike damned protoss turrets. They eat my zerglings.

well it was 4v4 then someone is going to get mass BCs. I would think hydras would be the best counter. As Toss, I use Feedback + blink. Infestors would probably help.

In theory corruptors kill battlecruisers supply for supply (3 corruptors vs. 1 BC) and is reasonably cost-effective (450/300/6 vs. 400/300/6).

However... if the guy is using yamato cannon and reaches a critical mass of BC's, it becomes difficult.

Basically if he somehow got 20 battlecruiser, the way to beat it is to never let him get that many.

Roaches and lings to defend while you use infestors to take control of the bc's.

I think the point is you shouldn't be letting an opponent supply cap like that. Zerg has never been about strait up even vs even supply cap fights. They're designed around trading armies and rebuilding quicker then the opponent can, or simply staying ahead.
