ATI Catalyst 10.6 Drivers

Got 10.6 drivers and 10.6 app profiles running on my 2 Asus Matrix P5870s at 5040x1050 without a hitch. Actually, these have given me better performance than any previous driver has on this setup. Great improvement, from my point of view anyway.

I wish I could get these to work :( Is anyone else having a problem?

Any game I launch after installing these causes a crash to desktop or display driver error within ~3 seconds. I've completely wiped all the previous driver files and reinstalled the cards from new, same problem. Even setting the cards back to stock clocks does not fix the problem. Reinstalling 10.5 WHQL fixes it immediately, however.

HDMI audio dropout is fixed with these, thank you and finally.

Really? Is this confirmed? You turning all of the audio quality settings to the max? I'd just given up on that whole thing. Realtek released a new HDMI audio driver for ATI cards a couple of days ago, too.

I too want to know...

The release notes say it is fixed, but they don't specify which models. Is it just the 5xxx series like 10.4, or all supported models?

Anyone?

I would also like to know.

Do I have to uninstall the 10.5 drivers first or can I just install over them with the 10.6?

Excellent I'll get these installed when I get home from work....

Steps to properly install ATI Catalyst Drivers 10.6

Download and Install Driver Sweeper 2.1.0 (www.guru3d.com
Boot into windows and uninstall ALL ATI Application (CCC, Hydravsion and the application profiles if you run crossfire) and then reboot your computer.
After the reboot, boot into safe mode (F8 at bootup)
Once you are in safe mode, run the driver sweeper, uninstall ALL ATI related items (this removes all Registry settings)
Boot your computer back into normal mode.
After you login, Install the CCC and then reboot. Then install the Hydravision and the crossfire application profile (If you run crossfire)
You should be good to go after this. It is never smart to install a driver update over and older driver because the older driver leaves behind some old crap that may cause performance issues.

Install them right over the old ones.

I disagree with this 100%

I suggest uninstalling and using Driver Sweeper in safe mode, then if you are using crossfire, update the crossfire profiles from where you downloaded the driver. This makes it so you don't have any issues at all with lingering driver components.

Nifty that the installer has an upgrade option and doesn't require rebooting. So used to rebooting twice - once to uninstall and once again to install with nVidia all these years.

I disagree with this 100%! Installing over old drivers works perfectly for me in Win 7 x64.

Just install over the old ones with Windows 7 64 bit. Never had a problem. That is how ATI recommends to do it.

For years (XP, Vista, Win7) have installed the drivers over themselves and never had any problems. Agree with others that only do a sweeper if you have issues. I also reinstall my entire system, OS and all, about once a year, just to do some cleaning.

The way I see it is why make more work for yourself? If installing them over themselves causes an issue you STILL can run a sweeper to get rid of everything. If it works fine, you saved yourself time. If it doesn't you really didn't lose much time, if any.

I've been installing drivers over the old one's for almost 2 years now. I've done it that way with my 4850's, my 4870 and my 5870 and I've never had any problems. Even when moving from 4850 crossfire to a single 4870.

I'll hold off on upgrading until I hear more. I'm wondering if this will make my DisplayPort flickering better or worse (compared to 10.3b).

Well, I can confirm that the multi-channel audio bugs seem to be gone. I set everything to 24/192 and opened about 20 windows with no issues. As always, I recommend the Realtek drivers to give you the instant-mode feature and additional settings.

Please stop recommending this antiquated way of installing drivers. This hasn't been necessary for years. Simply uninstall drivers -> reboot -> delete ati folders in c: and userdata -> install new drivers -> reboot. This way is not only faster, it lessens the likelihood of an issue from driver installation to occur. (which in my case has happened exactly 0 times vs the countless while using the driversweeper/safemood method)

well 10.6 bumps my idle clocks to 400/1300 while on 10.4 i had 157/300 (this is with three monitors btw)
unless its possible to adjust default clocks imma go back to 10.4

Okay I'm stumped. FPS dropped to 31 in BFBC2 and I'm running 5970 CrossFireX. Anyone else having this problem? Just want to check before I go back to 10.5.

There's a comment on the download page that talks about performance being down with BF: BC2. You may want to just jump back to the 10.5.

I upgraded last night and played BF:BC2, Star Trek Online and World In Conflict. Both STO and WIC play great. BFBC2 sucks in crossfire. FPS went from 90-120 with the 10.5's to 30-50 with the 10.6's running in crossfire. Single card still pushes 75-80fps.

Back to the 10.5's for me.

Cschill1290, Took your suggestion and went back to 10.5. FPS jumped back up to 135 in the game. Lesson learned, once again.... If it aint broke, don't fix it. Thanks!

Yeah, apparently that's one of the issues that came up right away with these new drivers. Their twitter account is blowing up with people complaining about it. Haha.

Even uninstallation of the old drivers is unnecessary. Installing on top isn't just easy, it's recommended by ATi. ;)

Tried BC2. It's still using all four GPUs but performance does appear to be lower than before. Hmm...

Anyone know if this fixes the random enlarging cursor?

I've had this problem since... Catalyst 9.12 all the way into 10.5. I have a 5770 and run Windows 7 64-bit. Even clean install of the OS and start from scratch did not fix it.

Another problem were the random black screen freezes when playing any video that uses DXVA (Media Player 11 or Media Player Classic HomeCinema) or watching Flash videos with hardware acceleration like on Youtube, and that's with up-to-date Flash 10.1 (latest version).

It's really nerve-wracking, honestly, that six driver versions and I still get these problems, and I'm tempted to sell off the 5770 and go up to a 5830 or 5850, or jump ship to Nvidia (if they can solve the damn power requirements and heat issue) just to get stability in my PC system.

I've posted these problems on AMD's forum since version 10.3 and so far no response from anyone at AMD. I've gone so far to modify the BIOS to keep all clocks at 825/1125 with 1.1v and it's stable for now but I get these very rare occurances when the cursor enlarges or the screen freezes when I watch videos. It honestly looks like an issue with AMD/ATI's PowerPlay.

Have you made sure you have the latest motherboard bios? I've heard that has fixed it for some people.

Unfortunately the latest BIOS, version 1.D, only adds Thuban 6-core support and nothing more. And, last I checked, that BIOS hasn't been released yet. I currently have version 1.C.

I have a MSI K9A2 CF board.

It seems like every time I install the newest version, my frame rate is lower than with the previous driver.

Looks like AMD were quickly made aware and are making available a profile update for BFBC2 that will resolve this issue for Catalyst 10.6. May already be available on their site..

Err, corban, it's supposed to do that, you can NOT do multiple monitors at 157/300, that was a bug in the ATI drivers that they have fixed.... It's supposed to run at 400/full mem speed.

Edit: On Windows 7 w/Aero I mean

Does anyone get issues with Flash 10.1 with this driver?

Right click > Settings on the Flash player makes it hang.

The latest Gigabyte BIOS fixed it for me. Never seen the big cursor again afterwards.
