IT Resume Thread

I would trim the top line to something like this:

Network Specialist serving as an expert consultant on both Local Area Networks as well as Storage Area networks.

No need to abreivate.

Your first bullet point mixes both network architecture with systems architecture, something that you dont mention in your summary. Just something to consider.

Your other bullets may be a bit too technical for any of the non-technical screeners, just keep that in mind too.

I would not put "1 bullet point" job summaries. If anything take the above advice for the first bullet point and then elaborate on some specifics. You should have these if you have an consulting background in LAN/WAN networks. Something along the lines of "Set up Local Area Network for 50-60 computers". Just a vague example.

As far as recruiters goes it really depends on the company. Every interview except for my banking software company did a phone interview/pre interview before I interviewed with anyone in the company. These included the following.
What you're calling recruiters are pre-screeners. Recruiters simply look over a resume for "hot" words and send the resume off to the technical team to make a decision if they should grant the candidate a first round phone screening. If you were asked anything technical, these are NOT recruiters.

- Sandhills Publishing: Systems Intern - 3 interviews. I made it to round 2. This was a phone interview, recruiter in person interview. 3rd interview was supposedly with the Systems Manager.

- Hyvee - MIS Intern - Phone interview followed by a in person interview with key MIS management

- Career Services - IT Intern. Email questionnaire followed up by in person interview. Go the job and person doing the interview (my former boss) had way more experience than any recruiter you will find (maybe not any, but pretty close).

Tek Systems Network Tech- 2 Phone interviews, these people are recruiters, so all my interviews were with recruiters.

- Union Pacific - MIS Intern - Recruiter in person interview.

- Hyland Software - Systems Installer - Phone interview followed by in person interview. Turned down job.

- Major School System - System Admin - Recruiter in person interview followed by recruiter/principal interview followed by network team interview - Current position
Sounds like you had a lot of interviews, Im curious if all you in person interviews were technology related or management type interviews. I also see you interviewed a Tek, I know a slew of people that work there. Was also offered a job there a few years back.

List goes on, but I live in a state that has an over abundance of college graduates vs how many jobs are available so it is possible to weed out many applicants where I live.

I think I probably live in an area where the college kids flourish, though they're usually "dog shit" for lack of a better term. Weeding through candidates seems to be down to a science in the NJ/NYC area. Where are you from? Also, would like to see your resume.

I see. Well all the business cards list their titles are recruiters etc. I believe some of them are recruiters, but yes I agree some are pre screeners.

Most of my interviews were probably management type interviews. I do not go for pure technical interviews as my background really does not suit the type of questions relating to programming languages and advanced knowledge of the IT field. Plus I have no specifics in IT, which means I do not have a CCNA etc.

I do have a 4 year degree, which to some it is a hit and miss. It really just depends. I consider myself average and right now I am undecided my future education route.

Teksystems is a funny story. I worked with a lady at Career Services back in the day. She is a IT recruiter for TekSystems. She ended up getting me that phone interview for TekSystems, but it did not go anywhere. Months later she ended up placing me in a Classified civilian job for Raytheon as basically a "weather" systems type installer with basic security clearance.

I basically severed the tie after I turned the job down after being offered it the same day because of the 90 percent travel and to me what seemed like long work weeks. I just was not sure. I do and do not regret it.

Anyways I am from Nebraska.

First things first,
Your objective seriously looks like you pulled it from a resume engine or someone at your college career center wrote it. You need to make it more personalized and interesting.

Education all the way to the bottom, you have started your career and that's one of the last things anyone cares about now(your education). Experience is what you want to key in on.

Since you dont have a lot of experience, I would put your skills section to the top(skills cored resume) and try and build that out more. Expand each of those sections to include as much as possible.

Kill the volunteer and awards and combine all of them into an achievement section, looks much more professional.

Your experience section looks good, not too bloated which is a good thing.

You want to look as experienced as possible, If I saw this resume I would assume that you JUST graduated college simply on the way that it looks and how some of it reads.. Also, dont worry about having a multipage resume. Thinking that everything needs to fit on one page is a thing of the [recent] past. My resume is almost 3 pages long and ive always had at max a 2 day turn around.

Yes I have not touched it since college so the objective statement would obviously change. I agree I do need to kill the volunteer section.

I will have to go into the multipage resume as I have not listed my current experience, but for what it is worth thanks for the suggestions.

not sure if this belongs here...

I've recently moved into management, and unfortunately there were some tough things that had to be done. now that it is over with, I'm short two people.

I'm about to get a crash course in being on the other side of the table, as I'm being tasked with hiring a Jr. Sys admin and a senior sys admin. Anyone have any good advice, or a few good sample interview questions that I might be able to utilize?

My background is in technology, and up until recently I was a systems administrator myself. Just not sure how in depth to go, I'm not out to scare potential new hires, but I don't want to hire someone not up to the challenge.

Please check mine once more.

Question, do you recommend saving resume in pdf format?

I read mixed opinions on this. I usually send both PDF and Word (97-2003) formats. I think PDF is pretty universal in general, and Word is universal in the resume area. Not everybody uses Office 2007, so I tend to stay away from that format. I also keep a text version on hand just in case.

Thoughts?

- Use active voice.
- Not sure how this looks in Word, but consider highlighting the most important stuff using a visual F pattern.
- Are you looking for a networking job or a system admin job? Consider having separate resumes for each.
- The recruiter probably doesn't care about your co-workers certifications.
- Did you ever do anything that changed the environment in a positive way? If so, find a way to measure it and list it.
- I would use "Assisted" to replace "Worked closely with".

What's active voice?
What's visual F pattern?
I'm looking for net eng jobs, but I started in Sys work and figure it can't hurt to show that I'm well rounded.
Not good to work with/under a CCIE? I figured that would help somehow.
I'll try to come up with something.
Thanks, done.

not so much. I'm conducting interviews to hire two sysadmins for my team right now, and it's annoying receiving resumes that have either network admin or developer crap all over them. We have Network Admins, and we have Developers, don't apply for a sys admin position if all you've done is work with Cisco, and don't start off your resume to be a sys admin with "I know how to code in every language that popped up on google"

</rant>

long day of wading through resumes...

A good cover letter can often alleviate the annoyingness of it though, I've got a few "I've done programming for a decade, but I really really want to be a sys admin because *reasons*" and that's alright.

I'm not sure that what you're saying applies. I haven't only worked with Cisco, the first ~5 years or my career was all sys admin work. And my resume is definitely way more geared towards networking. I left a bit of my sys experience on there so people will know that while I'm now a net eng, I can also do other things and I don't live in a bubble.

Obviously the two of you don't think it will help me, but will it hurt me? If not I'd rather just leave it in.

You missed the point I was trying to make. If you are trying to get a network admin job, highlight the relevant experience from when you where a sys admin. For example, I'm sure you configured TCP/IP settings, probably managed firewalls, etc. This is the best way to show that your 5 years sys admin experience is relevant to your desire to get a net admin position.

Oh, I figured it already read that way. I'll redo some of the wording. Thanks.

Ok guys, looking for some advice. I have two very important interviews next week that I do not want to screw up. My last interviews have gone decently, but I keep mental blocking/trying to hard to find answers to questions I know. I am hoping someone has some interview advice, things that have worked for you, tips, ect.

Thanks a ton!

Here is a copy/paste of my resume.

Let me know what you guys think.

Just now came across this thread, got some good ideas and will post mine up when time comes! :) Thanks for the info guys.

I completed my degree last year Oct '08. I have only had two interviews for Network Admin. I've changed my resume so many times it's not funny. If someone could tell me what I am missing or need to add; it would be appreciated. I have also been out of work and on unemployment for almost a year. So any direction with the resume before my unemployment runs out in 2 weeks?

Thanks in advance

Sad to say, the best thing you can do is plow through this entire thread. I hate to say it but most of the tips and direction your resume needs has already been addressed many times over here. I wish there was an easier way to get the information but I just don't see any other way. Good luck and please be sure to post what you find and how it changes your resume!!

So, this thread is only to help out those with a networking background? How about just general IT Support? I could use some updating on mine, especially the way the job market is looking. :D

Frankly, I'd consider this thread for anyone in need of some resume help in this forum. If you're here, you probably are involved in networking somehow!!

This resume would be geared towards a networking gig. There's a couple changes I'm going to make that I havent yet, but let me know what you guys think, all feedback is welcome

Well, as I said before, your resume has some classic issues (or at least what I'd call issues) that have been covered many times over in this thread since it was started over 5 years ago. I'm sorry there isn't a better way of doing this but reading through this thread will address most of them. However, since I haven't brought up some of these points in a while, I'll go ahead and repeat most of them for you here:

1. I'd drop the fancy formatting. Most won't see it and it really doesn't sell yourself like it used to. Frankly, as a hiring person, I'm not the least bit impressed with nice formatting, good paper stock, colors, etc. In fact, it makes me wonder if I'm being "dazzled" into not noticing something that maybe I should. Most resumes (especially in larger organizations) will be loaded into a system that searches for keywords anyways so it rarely is even seen anymore. Most companies that use Monster won't even have a system where fancy resumes get uploaded --more like the information is extracted from the document and we all just move on. Now the exception to that may be a graphic design resume or something like that (but this isn't quite the forum for that).

2. Get to the point quickly. Your opening statement should tell me as quickly as possible who you are and how much experience you have. Don't make me mull through 2 pages to know some very basic things like if you're an entry-level tech or senior IT manager material. I need to know quickly if I should read on or stop wasting time.

3. Change the format from a chronological format to what I'd call a "hybrid" format where you will list your skills instead of a detailed job history. This will allow you to more effectively convey your skills without making the hiring people read through your life history just to find out if you can manage an Exchange server. There are examples of this on this thread but I believe this one I posted waaaaay back then should give you the idea. It is by no means my best work but I think you'll get the idea.

4. Once adding a detailed Skills section, reduce your employment list to a single line per each job. It won't matter as much once your skills are established earlier. Besides, you will be able to add skills to your roster that you couldn't have mentioned before if you acquired them without being paid for them!

5. Drop the "references available..." statement. It's not necessary. Of course references are available if requested. The only thing that would be worth mentioning about references would be if the were NOT available (like if you worked for the CIA or something)!!

Work on it and make sure to post what you come up with here so we can all learn from the process too!! Good luck.

When applications are emailed (this is for a very small company), is it proper etiquette to format it using an email client's rich text formatting and hoping it plays nicely with the recipient's client or attaching it as a document, and if document, which format? (.doc, .docx, .pdf?)

PDF gets my vote. I make all forms using Adobe's LiveCycle Designer software so the boxes can be filled in on the PC and then printed out. PM me if you need more info...

I see a lot of good advice in here for people who have resumes with a lot of work experience, but I'm kinda at the entry level and looking for some recommendations. I don't have my resume at the moment (at work) but perhaps I can explain some of the obstacles I'm currently facing in my job search in the hopes anyone has some ideas for me (or a job :p)

I'm seeking an IT career field position. I've done computer repair for years privately (I advertise my service locally), but not in any official capacity. No matter how I phrase this experience in my resume, it sounds stupid to me. Currently I've got something like "6 years experience as a privately paid home computer service technician" and IMO it just screams "I spent 6 years cleaning up viruses and malware!"

Additionally, I'm a college dropout with no degree ::cringe:: I just couldn't handle juggling work and school at the same time and took a hiatus that ended up becoming prolonged (it's been 6 years now). Now I've got a daughter and school isn't going to be an option for another couple years until she's in preschool.

I've been working for about 4 years in a call center for a major home security company (make a guess, you've probably got it). My job title is Special Operations, which sounds fancy, but I'm ultimately just a glorified customer service representative for the company's more important accounts (and those that just have confusing contracts they don't want to train everyone else to have to understand). The key issue here is that the position is purely customer service and service technician quality control, so the position doesn't actually involve any technical support or troubleshooting, which doesn't lend much to my resume.

The company doesn't have any IT openings, (in fact, they just outsourced most of the on-site IT team) so I've got to cast my line elsewhere.

The city I live in houses a major tech institute, RIT, so the market is swarming with eager tech students, most of which have an Associates and a certification or two. Tough competition for a guy who's got neither. Xerox and Kodak are also based here and have been outsourcing, so there are also a fair number of experienced tech professionals looking for work.

I'm looking for a job that pays $30,000 a year (yes, I make significantly less than that currently) minimum. I'm not expecting anything more than a Help Desk position or something similar, but the local positions (most of them for Tek) are contract work positions, and I need something more reliable than that.

I have no certifications currently, though I should have the ICND1 test (CCENT certification) completed in a week or two (depends if I have to reschedule this Wednesday's test, family may be visiting). I expect to take the CCNA within a month or two after that.

My previous employment history is a very short list. Other than the home computer service I've done on the side for the last 6 years or so, I had a couple years throwing lumber into bins at a home improvement warehouse, a few months at a gas station, and a summer installing above-ground pools before my current job.

I've been hitting the books hard to get some certifications under my belt, and I've been messing around with my home Cisco lab and joined the PeerIX Project to get some more hands-on experience with networking. Would love to find a way to fit in some school so I can put in the 15 credits or so I need to finish of my Associates in Computer Science, but time nor budget currently allows.

I'll post my resume when I get home see what you guys think. I hate my resume because it's fairly obvious to me (and probably anyone else) that it's reaching when it comes to listing my experience.

For this part of my resume it sounds more like:

Various freelance IT (xxx County, FL)

then I listed out specific jobs that were large, memorable, particularly difficult, and some challenges overcome.
