IT Resume Thread

Just wanted to throw something out there that i have had personal experience with. I had a very laid back job for about 4 years that allowed me to venture into starting my own side business in IT consulting for home and business. When it came time to look for a new job i thought it would look good to use it on my resume because in my opinion it would show an employer that you have experience in multiple environments, are a quick learner, have a broad knowledge base, and have great communication/people skills (you definitely wont get calls back if you dont). I didnt foresee the problems i would run into with this on my resume.

On my first 2 interviews they were hinting at the fact that they were worried that i may be trying to do business on the side while at work or on company time. I assured them that i would cut ties with my side business and that it was purely for gaining more experience and that the company i was working for at the time allowed me to do this. I didnt get either job. I ended up taking it off my resume completely after that and never made a mention of it in my next interview and got the job. It might have just been coincidence and i would have gotten the job anyway even if it was on there but i am going to play it safe from now on and just leave it off if i am ever to seek new employment again.

Been wanting to post my own for some help...at least now it's a bit more than a list of ideas. I've read through pretty much the entire thread...still rewording things and changing bits, but please help!

Owner/Operator, November 2006 – Present
Responsibilities include over the phone and in person technical support of home and small business clients.

Not silly at all. Usually I like to see "Resume for blah blah blah position (job number blah blah blah)." I would not put the term "Application" in the subject as it ISN'T an application -just your resume.

From what I've seen, employers will have a job ID and the subject line is simply "Job ID: xxxx."

If that's not the case, then doing what is quote above is perfectly fine.

I can completely understand where you're coming from with your experience but I can give you plenty of examples both in my own life and others I've worked with that have worked out in the opposite way. Some employers are looking for someone who loves their work so much that they will do it even when "off the clock" or after hours for someone else. It also shows ambition and a drive to advance yourself. Still there are those employers that are just plain old stupid and lay something on you like "how do I know you won't steal from us?" What a silly thing to lay on a potential employee. Basically saying, "We don't trust you" right off the bat. Now some trust has to be earned but this is a bit silly. To think that their company has so little control of their employees that they could do work for someone else at the same time without anyone knowing doesn't say much for their supervision or accounting departments either!

Just understand that some things will prevent you from getting a job that are just out of your control. I actually had an employment counselor try and tell a class that they should avoid wearing cologne to an interview on the off-chance that the interviewer is a woman and just had a fight with her husband that morning (and just so happens to wear the same cologne). Your fragrance will remind her of the negative experience and, thus, not hire you. I mean please! If the stars are that crossed against you, you just weren't meant to get that job. Why not smell nice? There are so many cautions out there that you can get tied up trying to keep them all heeded. I'd say don't worry about it. Tell the truth, show off your best qualities, and sell yourself the best you can. Let the cards fall as they will!

A seasoned network engineer...

Here's my thoughts:

Summary Statement
===============
I'd trim out the fluff and word it something like this "A seasoned network engineer with 10 years experience in varying aspects of information technology"

Qualifications
==========
Sort out your skills into major categories that will help the reader direct them to the experience they're looking for. Categories like Leadership, WAN Administration, blah blah blah...

You also may want to consider listing all your certifications separately from your skills.

Professional Experience
==================
If you feel that your "employment life story" is your best selling point, then please ignore what I'm about to tell you. Frankly I'd toss the detailed work history and just flesh out your Qualifications section with more information. Leave your work history to a simple line-per-job that just lists your title, company, location, and dates.

Other thoughts
===========
I quickly saw there is a problem with your opening statement that you have 10 years experience. Unless you can justify it clearly in your resume, you better be ready to explain yourself in an interview (although you may not get a few because of this issue). I fully understand that not all experience is gained via employment --as it should be. but I don't see any reference to a job that goes back to 1998 or any schooling. I can probably assume that some of your work experience skills that you've listed are not overlapping but actually linear (like maybe a 6-year stint doing skill A and a 4-year stint doing skill B) but if you're going to try that angle, I'd do my best to subdue your work history like I've described above. Many employers aren't smart enough to deduce how you got 10 years of experience with a work history that only goes back to 2005 and schooling that goes back to 1999 for 1 week.

Hope this helps. Good luck!!

I'm going to apply for a systems engineering job. I had my interview and it was pretty relaxed. I am already with the company so I have a good chance of getting the job. I'll be able get experience with some new systems. I have used some tips from this forum so I hope it will help.

I do think it is interesting that businesses they to list everything under the sun for somebody to know for the job. Most people won't know these things unless their company used them. I think I am a strong canidate for the job so I'll keep this forum up to date.

Skills needed:
- Microsoft Windows Operating Systems including NT 4.0, Server 2000 and 2003
- Microsoft Active Directory and Exchange Server administration
- Microsoft SMS, WSUS and similar desktop management systems
- Administration of computing resources in an SAP environment with SQLServer
- Active Scripting and .NET programming
- IIS web server administration
- ESX VMware virtual infrastructure management
- EMC Clariion Storage Array management
- Brocade and McData Fibre Channel fabric management
- Enterprise backup (Symantec NetBackup) and Disaster Recovery testing
- Enterprise system monitoring with SiteScope or similar frameworks
- Working knowledge of Cisco LAN/WAN gear including firewalls, load balancers and VPN

Should I remove my old jobs?

I'd do more than just remove a few old job listings. Frankly, and I'm still sorry to say this, I think you would do yourself a benefit from plowing through this entire thread. At least the last few pages. Because your work experience isn't what some would consider flattering, a hybrid or combination resume would definitely help you out. By highlighting more on your skills and far less on your work history (like 2 lines per job) it will sell yourself much better. Give it a shot and show us what you come up with...

Good luck!

I've actually had a lot of hits on my resumes & a lot of offers. (I had 3 offers at once... )

But will do...

I read and hire plenty of people with terrible resumes. I believe it's because I've learned how to cut through the crap and find the actual information I'm looking for. Some employers are simply, well, stupid. HR departments are another source of bad hiring practices. Still selling yourself is what it's all about.

Great news that you've got a buncha' offers!!

So keep it to the bare minimum, unless asked otherwise?

Not necessarily, I'd keep the "work history" portion to a minimum and spend most of your resume page showing your skills. Sort them into categories, add qualifiers to your experience (like years or accomplishments). This way, an employer doesn't read your "life history" just to find out if you can work with Active Directory!

Sounds good. Thanks for the advice I'll work on that tonight! :D

Hello everyone,

Is this thread strictly used for resume advice only or may we ask any questions we may have about our own carrer paths as well? If this isn't the place or forum for this then please let me know.

Thank you

Well I personally don't see any problem with throwing it in this thread. Then again, if someone else is looking for such advice in the future, I'm not sure they'd find it under this thread title... Your choice. I seem to recall no such questions asked within this thread in the 4 years it's been going though...

I was browsing this thread and got the same impression as well. Are there places located on HardForum where I could ask for this type of advice? I've come to conclusion that a lot of user here seem to work in the IT field and was hoping to gather some advice since I really don't have any friends or family members that know much about IT related work.

Well, if you have access, hit up the GenMay area and you can pretty much post anything you want.

Looking for some help on the resume. Here is the job posting found on the job posting board at school:
Symmetry Corp.
9/9/08

Position: IT Internship

Description: If selected, student will get hands-on experience with enterprise-class technologies including SAP, Windows, UNIX, OS400, Oracle, SQL, and DB2. On-the-job training will be provided with unlimited growth potential. Previous students have become our highest paid consultants.

Qualifications: Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in MIS. Junior or Senior student status. Great interpersonal skills and strong customer service skills.

Hours: Part-Time

Compensation: $13-$15 per hour

Application: Apply online via PantherJOBS.

And here is my resume. I've got a nice format (but obviously that isn't seen here). I need an objective. I'm not too good with these. I need some input pertaining to the job posting to include in my resume. I think I've covered the majority of what is needed. Doesn't look like they require too much prior experience. Makes me wonder why the posting is still up.

Can someone please take a look at my resume? The spaces are off in the above quote, I used 12 size font for headers and 10 for all text and no spaces in the entire resume. I just used 6 point spacing after sections to put a visual barrier in without wasting space. Its 1 complete page from head to toe with not 1 line left.

Thanks in advance.

Naw, I've just been so busy lately that I haven't had the time to review these resumes for a while. In fact, I don't know when I can (not that someone else can't). I'll try and get to them as soon as I possibly can though... Good luck guys!

Anyone have any feedback on how long it will take to 'process' applications from local govnt office? I applied for a county job working in the IT Dept and was told by a Deputy friend of mine in that county they are pretty slow (Like weeks, if not months).

Job posting deadline was last Friday (12/12) and I have not called yet. I sent my materials via FedEx w/ signature required so I know they got it. When should I call?

Yeah, they're terrible at that sort of thing. Frankly, you have to wonder who they manage to hire. Most of the "good hires" have already moved on after turning in their applications and resumes and found other jobs elsewhere at companies that are more responsive. The leftovers are what are usually still available since they're not having luck getting hired anywhere else!! Considering the fact that I've worked around government employees for the last 20 years, I think I can speak with some authority on the subject!!

Here are some things I did on my internship resume that you could work on IMO.

- Home and School address should be changed to Current and Permanent addresses

- Don't put one and then the other to fill space, left align one and right align the other across from it

- Put all experience under one section putting most relavent at the top and bullet everything under jobs

- I personally would do away from courses because then the employer has to guess what was taught in those courses. fill out your skills area with more info and don't bullet it to fill space. Seriously put everything you possibly have been taught or messed with. I would go even further and section off skills with 2 sub categories like experienced with and regular basis.

- replace skills with Technical Skills

- your objective should be more self selling than it is. Try this:

An upcoming student possessing the willingness to learn wanting to obtain an internship at <insert company> where I can utilize my skills in Information Technology.

or something to that effect.

Pick what is the best sections of your resume currently and sell what is the best feature about you as a person and work your way down. I would personally go:

Name
Info
Education
Job Experience
Technical Skills

Oh and don't forget to put references by request at the bottom of the resume.

After you get some pointers here def make sure you run it by some of your teachers before you send it out. It will help a TON! I just finished my resume I'm going to be sending out for jobs (I'm a senior) and I had a Dr. of my network analysis and design course that used to hire people at the pentagon (was in the pentagon when it was bombed on 9/11) look at it 3 times and then I had another one of my teachers look at it once and then I went and had a english major look it over for grammer problems. It took me around 3 months to get all that done because it was during classes but its done and my final grades for last semester were uploaded yesterday so I get to change my GPA's on the resume and I'm done. ;)

Oh I almost forgot. Under education make sure to put your cumulative GPA and your Area GPA (only tech classes averaged together for an area GPA) because different companies will want to know those numbers. I only hope yours are above a 3.0.

Yea i'm above a 3.0. Thanks for the suggestions i will work on it. The home and permanent address are on the same lines actually but it didnt' show up that way when i took out the addresses for safety sake.

There seem to be a lot of people in here that are already in the industry so I'm curious to know their opinions on the subject.

I'm a dual major (Information Systems - Enterprise Resource Planning) (Management).

The problem is that it has become obvious that the degree, while somewhat technical, isn't nearly as tech-oriented as the IT program. I'm planning on insulating with some certs but I'm trying to figure out whether I'm fucked or not. By the time I graduate, I'll have a decent amount of experience (Two year co-op with GE Transportation Systems and two years of basic experience in the IT building, primarily consisting of computer repair and image building/distribution).

I would like to get some experience in ERP and eventually work as a project manager or consultant but it seems like companies would be quicker to hire someone with an IT graduate with a minor in ERP than an IS graduate with the same emphasis.

I would say the later would be a better idea. There are slight differences in different ERP solutions and your going to get to know the one you are going to support or implement anyways. I've taken 2 ERP classes and besides actually messing with the different programs I pretty much know how they work and how you would implement one without failure to an extent. I also go to sit in on a training session for my college that was implementing a 2 million dollar ERP project which was nice experience :).

As a long-time reader and member of HardForum, I've decided to take my interest in computers to the next level. I'm currently a teacher but want to get into IT. I will be going back to school within the next 6 months to study Computer Networking. Would you tell me if this is a good resume for a (very) entry-level IT job? Advice is much appreciated!

Your experience is really good and your resume is well written. One point I will stress is to minimize the amount of bullet points per job to around 4 or 5. Some of your bullet points seem general in nature (supported systems, researched systems) and they overlap your previous jobs. What did you research?

If you must include those a better statement would read "Researched VoIP solution in order to replace all phone lines on a cost savings of 20000 per year. You get the idea.

If you must list sentences as a Proficiencies make sure they are revelevant to the job in which you are applying. Many times jobs will list the types of systems or software you must use and an automated program will go through resumes looking for those keywords.

For example instead of listing "re imaged computers" list "reimaged and installed using Norton Ghost"

Get rid of the motivation. That will be an interview question. Your objective should focus on training.

For instance "To obtain a position in X company where my skills in IT and teaching or training can bring value to the company"

If you get an interview you should stress that you have had experience with children etc.

Lots of school systems will ask for that when hiring an IT person. In fact I think if you have skills in teaching you are better hire for a school system IT job because most of the IT experience comes from being on the job.

I was an intern to a project manager for a banking software company but I never messed with ERP systems. In fact I would not be surprised if most interns in Project Management never saw numbers.

You may be better off looking for an internship in manufacturing. Many manufacturing companies use ERP systems for forecasting.

Please take a look at my resume, it prints out as one page... However I feel its a bit too much?
