so water cooled is the way to go ?
if you enjoy overcomplicating things in the name of overclocking, then yes. Plus the bragging rights are fun as well. :p

Here is where krotch has gone wrong is his ghetto pimping effort. It looks like the rich kid (lian li) who wants to live a hood life, it doesn't really fit in with the other ghetto mods. :p

Well, after living in a ghetto case, where temps blew ass, I had to move to a better case. Here's the old case, which I semi modded.

Project%20Box%2001.JPG

I pulled the 90mm fan from old mid-90's Compaq server at work. I found a switch laying around in one of my drawers from doing car work.

Project%20Box%2003.JPG

Here's where I wired up the fan to turn on and off. I used masking tap to keep from having bare wires. I had to extend the wires, so once again...used the wires inside Cat-5 cables for that. I superglued the wires down, so they wouldn't fall down and all over the place.

Case cooling still blew ass. I ended up pulling the top off and started dremeling the top. I kept the comp running, as during the time, I only had one comp.

Project%20Box%2002.JPG

Even with the top off and two 120mm fans blowing out and all other fans blowing in, the stupid thing still way too hot. Also, my dremel cutting wheels blew ass. I never finished it and ended up buying the new case.

Course looking through the ghetto mods, I've seen ppl spend more money on a PSU, than I did on my case. Either way, this thread is called "Post your Ghetto Mod pics" not "Post your Ghetto Computer pics."

Huge difference.I can post pics of me duct taping diamonds and gold coins onto the case. Guess what. Would be considered a Ghetto mod.

I figure this is pretty ghetto, since my Compy doesn't even have a case..(this isn't sig rig..lol). I am currently, and have been, modding it's actual case, for about a month now...

Here's the case, so far anyways.

I guess it's not a ghetto mod, yet anyays....well, it its sitting on a mobo tray, that I ripped out of another case. And, this whole computer setup up cost me less than 200 bucks...w00t

So ghetto I had to take it with my cellphone's camera. It's an ATX PSU with all the wires cut off except for the 12V & an equal number of ground. The green switch cable is permanently attached to a ground cable inside the box, so as soon as you plug it in it's live. The wires aren't even soldered, just twisted. You'd be surprised when 14A of 12V comes in handy (Ham Radio, Car stereos, testing PC fans & lights, etc.)

(And yes of course it passed the compulsory electrical safety tests for student accomodation, honest!)

First what, mod? If so, stay the hell away from the internals of the PSU, line voltage can kill if you don't know what you're doing.

Well.. You guys MADE me do it..
I have actually uploaded my ghetto mod from 4 years ago.
MOUSE PAD HAND COOLER !
Its even more sad that I still have these photos. :)

After my Zalman northbridge block cracked, I fashioned my own block from hardware store plumbing fittings. Does the trick.

mmm nice to know that im not the only person using swiftech's older blocks :p

you should seriously get some kind of award for that "waterblock"

possibly a darwin if you play your cards right.

I nominate that waterblock for [H] frontpage. Of course, if Steve or Kyle is up to it.. ;)

That waterblock is to [H]ard!

This is not mine, it's my dads. I rigged this up so his Celly @ 350MHz would not overheat.

Yes that is a Quantum bigfoot drive.

ah what the hell... here's the my XPS SFF Ghetto mod. :D lol. It's
not much bigger than a notebook and I have a switch for power and lights
as well as leds for power and hd activity. I have added another fan right above the
cpu since P3 1ghz cpus run a little hot and because the case is
so small.

we were throwing out some old P3 rack mounted servers today at work
so I decided to gut them. I didn't have a spare case... but I did have a
couple of nice XPS boxes leftover from my new laptop. :p I was originally
going to use the dual P3 motherboard but it was a little too big so I went
with the single. The dual rig is going to be used for XPS part 2 at the bottom. :)

the victim:

Oh my God. That's hilarious.

Also I didnt have any thermal paste so I used a mixture of aquaphor and toothpaste. :D

I've trolled around this thread for a week or so now, and totally forgot about my ghetto-ness.

Before my current case, I will tell you about my other old computer, which I don't have pictures of.

My Dell Dimension 2350 (which had 8 months of Planetside, and 11 months as a server.) I put 11 60mm fans on the top of this dell case, every one of them blowing out. I drilled out 3-5 holes in a line to start each fan, then using plier, and a wrench, ripped 2 more lines, and finally bent the piece back and forth to snap the last side of the metal, and rip it free. 11 times.

Now I have a Dell Dimension XPS 400, which came with only 2 fans, both on the front, and no fan on my x600 video card. Before I bought this Dell, I planned on building my own PC, but was running out of money. My mom had 1000 bucks on her Dell account, and told me that was my only option.

So anyways, I had boughten a PSU already planning a custom pc. It was a Thermal take one which I can't remember the name of, and it came with a squirrel cage type fan, and controlled.

Me being a zip tie whore, I zip tied the fan on the 4 corners to the back grid like area of the case. I then cut out (with pliers again :p) 1 corner and the 4 pieces connected to it. Then I ripped up the fan controller, and placed 1 of the knobs it in that hole. So now I have a powerful fan right above my video card, to suck out heat that isn't really there.

The 2nd mod for this XPS was the video card. Nothing really to explain, all I did was get a 60mm fan and zip tie it around the heat sink on my video card.

The 3rd mod is some green cold cathodes. I have them wedged in, with the inverter just sitting on the ground, in one of the hard drive cages. One is wedged between the side of the case, and the top on t he video card, while the other sits between the grill/air opening, and the fan housing. I would like to get you alot of (better) pictures, but I am using an old shitty Sony Cyber-Shot 3.2 Mega pixel camera. If you all could recommend me a camera, and some shots taken with them (through PMs of course) I definitely would appreciate it. I hate this (hand-me-down) camera.

Again I don't have picks of the most ghettoized case, but I do have one of the XPS.

1st is when I did the modding. I got a new 3.0GBs 160GB HD, and the videocard fan, along with some cold cathodes all at the same time.

2nd is a closer look. Look just below the black block in the top right corner. Where the red wire and the blue looking thing meet, is the fan controlled. And the box is the fan itself.

I dunno.. I would rate it with 1.5 or 2 foodstamps, just because it's still in a case, and a half-way decent one too!

But, you do have a good start....

:( LoL yea it is in it's original case, but the case was dropped, so the bottom of the front face is fucked up. And yea, I love the way this case is setup. With some help I would like to modify it to hold a standard mobo and PSU, and epoxy (or something else) the face, to hide the cracks.

Yea I was thinking about doing some of the case with duct-tape and barbed-wire. My dad has a roll in storage (that he acquired anonymously.) I also wanted to drill out certain areas of the case (like the "Dell" on the side, and on the front of the case) and put green cathodes (LEDs in front), just because I want to mod something.

New Pics Here (Not very ghetto)

Is a heatercore on the top of a $300 case bad enough?

It doesn't look like this anymore, I got enough ghetto from my cardboard lan party case

Sort of ghetto Dell case mod. I wanted to upgrade the video card but only that and the power supply, I don't have enough money for a new case+system. With the side panel off, the video card ran great, but with it on, it got up to throttling temps, because the case was not made for a high-powered video card. So, what do you do? You cut a hole in the case, and what do you do with the sharp edges to the hole you cut out? Duct tape.

And just so you can see the inside (I really should have gone modular)

mmm nice to know that im not the only person using swiftech's older blocks :p

IMO the 1/2" version of that block is one of the best made... and the price tag on it made it my favorite block ever..

(my maze 3, still preforms jsut as good as any.. its not about the block, but about the water temps.... )

Ghetto.

whatup guys. I've successfully completed my first mod :D be it ghetto, it serves its purpose well and hell doesn't look all that bad

i decided i needed some interior lighting, so i finally got some blue cc lights and wired'm up today. I cringed at the idea of puttin in the on/off switch with the wires goin directly across my mobo.

so i decided to make this

Also the lil box is right next to the switch on the inside. All in all i'm pretty proud of this seemingly worthless mod.

Not enough duct tape, cardboard and spilled substances involved in that mod.

But I'm sure it works well, lol.

The hand cooler thing is hilarious and gets my vote for thread-winner. My question is, whose hand gets so hot while gaming? I can game for hours and hours and my hands will be the same temperature as the rest of my body. Anyhow, mysteries never cease.

Slapped a bigger fan on my girlfriend's stock AMD heatsink, until I get her something decent. I had these extra Antec 120mm blue led fans that I took out of my Antec 900. These things are really quiet!
