Try changing the boot parameters of the 64-bit livecd. Change 'splash' to 'nosplash', and remove 'quiet'.

You might also give Arch a try. Similar to gentoo but not quite. I prefer it.

I wouldn't advise Gentoo for a first time user either, Then I would rather try arch, which is (in my opinion) easier because it doesn't rely on compiling, and pacman is excellent.

Nothing is perfect. Also installing from within windows isn't very advisable, imo. Glad you haven't given up, though
