Horizon Zero Dawn (Official Discussion Thread)

The games have enough story to support the gameplay and art direction.

They don't have anywhere near enough story to support movies or books. What memorable characters? What deep interaction?

I guess if they just want to make a Transformers action movie with low tech Indians doing the robot fighting it's got enough for that... Enough to suck horribly.
There's enough story if they mainly focused on the Zero Dawn time period.

But yeah, I don't see it ending well if they tried to make a whole movie of far future robot dinosaurs. In fact, I think they could leave that out entirely, and make it all about Faro and Sobeck, and how Faro's arrogance led to the ending of the world, and that would be better.

I'm surprised the 3rd game in the trilogy has not yet been officially announced by Sony

Former SIE Worldwide Studios CEO Shuhei Yoshida said he thought Horizon Forbidden West would sell better, saying that sequels to established IP usually perform better. The issue with that is Horizon Zero Dawn was a pack in game included with the PlayStation 4 for a long time, so its "sales" numbers were inflated by console sales like Super Mario Bros. was for the NES. Forbidden West was also a pack in game for the PlayStation 5, and 50% of its "sales" were from that console bundle.

When a game is sold in a console bundle you can't actually know if that buyer even played the game, had an interest in it, or liked it enough to purchase DLC or sequels. Zero Dawn sold about 25 million copies while Forbidden West sold 8.5 million. Forbidden West reportedly had a budget of $212 million. What I'm getting at is I don't think this series is as popular as Sony thinks it is even though they were trying to prop it up as its newest big original property for PlayStation.

I got Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered on Steam. Did not like it compared to the original that I got on GOG. It's buggy. Playing along and they game play will just stop. Wait for 5 seconds and then it begins playing again. The GOG version never did that. Also, the keyboard keys I had problems with. I would be just walking and all of sudden, I'm now doing a roll. The GOG version never did that. So maybe the stopping was due to the new graphics? Even adjusting the graphics settings did not fix the issue. This is on AMD Radeon RX 5600M with a AMD Ryzen 4800H CPU. Yeah it's on a gaming laptop, but I never had any game on this laptop simply stop in the middle of play, or pressing the ESC key causes it to stop for a few seconds until its responsive again.

Mobile GPUs are not supported in this game. Even though the RX 5600M is about on par or slightly better than the minimum required RX 5500 XT, the shared memory system of a mobile GPU is usually what introduces issues. Also note that the minimum required specs are for 1280x720 resolution at 30 FPS. The requirements for the base game are a lot lower than the remastered version.

Thanks for that info. I guess I'll play it on my desktop, but I'm still running an older system:
Intel i5-6600K @3.5GHz
NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1660 Ti
on an Asus Asus Z170-K with 16 GB of ram

I do have a RTX 360 Ti that I haven't installed yet.

That seem to underestimate how much a PS5 phone home, maybe you are right..... but certainly if they purchase a DLC on your Sony store, you know how many people did and you can track the license number of the titles, when-where-how it was purchased.

Because of the console availability issue it is true (normally it is automatic, people buy those more expensive bundle only because they love the game, but not in the you cannot find console world) but I assume the game phone home.

Issue here, people playing the free game that come with its new consoles he has no this generation game for it yet, is also week signal, but I imagine they know how many hours they were played very well... the way John Carmack spoke about the Xbox side of things they did seem to knew quite a bit when people played ID games.

I would imagine the phoning home would include the number of achievement reached and hours played, which would be even better than true sales data on the game popularity.

A bit like steam seem to know who is playing what game quite well, a PS5-sony will (and they will have the device ID and know if it was part of bundle or not)

I stopped playing this awesome game because I have height issues and most every main quest I played you are forced to climb and jump very high above ground. It sucks that game developers don't care about people who are afraid of heights. I stopped playing Horizon Forbidden West and Kena Bridge of Spirits for the same reason.

How are you afraid of heights in a game? That seems a bit extreme even from a depth perception perspective.

Yeah, you're looking at a flat screen, there is no vertigo or other effects you get in real life that can trigger anxiety. But then again I don't understand how arachnophobia can be triggered by a game, either.

That is WILD, but i totally get it. I was in West Virginia recently and could walk anywhere near this 800 foot cliff that's a scenic overlook after a hike. I never think about it in games at all, and it does make sense that fear registers.

There some some games where I'll walk up to the edge of a cliff or building and my stomach will sink as though it was real. Nothing extreme enough to keep me from continuing to play, but enough to create a physical reaction. I only mildly don't like heights. If I had a true phobia, that would be problematic.

I can see where the poster is coming from...I don't have vertigo or anything like that but some games are a bit extreme with heights...the Assassin's Creed games being a great example...you climb those huge structures and make a leap of faith to the ground...I can see where people that are afraid of heights can have a reaction

i get what hes talking about. some height scenes in games make my stomach lurch too, but i never stopped over it. for me, i have to be attached to something for it to go away. i roofed for 3ish years, no issues, even after a good fall(rope worked!)

Complaining that the devs (for this game specifically) need to think of the vertically challenged mentally or physically ain't the way to go about it... Move on & do other games. 🤣

A well made game, especially one with very good environmental graphics like this game, can very well cause problems with people who have issues with heights. I happen to be one of those people. It's about immersion and making you forget you're sitting in front of a monitor and this game does that very well. If a game isn't immersive it doesn't bother me one bit.
