Resident Evil: Requiem

As happy as I am to support RE I’m glad I didn’t pay full price for this game. I like it, and I like it a lot, but I do not feel compelled to play it again, which was my main early fear. The idea of combining action and horror RE styles is kind of a good one, but at the same time doesn’t give you any play style options. It’s almost more of a cinematic experience. Domingo said it earlier and I agree, it’d be great to have bigger guns and just tear through everything in subsequent runs but it’s just not there. Great game but it feels like a one and done.

As I've gotten further and as the game has shifted from Grace to Leon, now I'm getting strong RE6 vibes. I actually liked RE6 (at least mostly), so I don't necessarily mind it.
In a nutshell, Grace missions = RE2, Leon missions = RE6.
I have no idea how you get RE2 from Grace's sections.

That hospital = a borderline clone the old police station. The double staircase with the desk in the middle, the multi-floor setup, the room on the left where you use currency to buy stuff, the right side where you get chased by a mega-badguy. They even take you back to the RE2 station later and you can see the layout similarities.

Is it advisable to have played all the predecessor RE games before this one? Funnily I own just about all of them but have only just completed Leon Kennedy's campaign in RE 2 (2019).

I would at least play the remakes first to get the backstory and truly appreciate the badass that Leon is.

I'd at least watch a recap video that goes over the ploy high points. You could go in totally blind and enjoy the game, but you'll definitely miss quite a few references to the older games in Leon's sections.

Pretty happy with the game. Completed it about a week ago. Only had one crash which was the first "pause" in the motorcycle sequence. I was really disappointed with the Tyrant fight, either I got lucky with his patterns or he is really lethargic and felt like standing still for extended periods for multiple rifle rounds to the heart.

That was my experience, too. I played on "normal" and he'd attack then just stand around completely exposed for 4-5 seconds. I killed him on the first try and reloaded my save to try again with less ammo. I replicated it the 2nd time using only the pistol and shotgun (which I had tons of ammo for). He's kinda spongy, but he's probably the easiest boss in the game.

Yeah I'd play RE2 at a minimum and preferably RE4 as well just because to many that is peak RE and a good bar to compare 9 against. You could also play RE7 to prepare for Grace's parts of RE9 since they're both more suspense and in first-person (as intended but of course optional in RE9), but of course there's no character lore reason to play anything other than RE2 and RE4 really.

I'd def recommend playing all of the main-line RE games at some point though besides RE6 since I skipped that one for going full-action game with new characters I really didn't care about. But I've heard from many that RE6 is still worth playing as well despite being the black sheep of all the numbered sequel games.

The game kinda just lets you face tank everything. You really never need to parry.

None of the bosses are super aggressive and you can pretty much just stand there and play the out damage them game for everything.

Worst case, you get smacked and get to watch Leon get ragdolled 15 feet and whatever boss will happily give you the breathing room to stand up and get back in the fight at a nice, leisurely pace. The bosses in general just ... don't really pressure you that much. The tyrant loves to stand there and eat an entire magazine.

I wish they played more into the hatchet, because there's even a unique animation in this fight for it when you parry him and it looks awesome.

I enjoyed RE6. It's very much a pure action game with constant urgency, but it should feel pretty familiar if you played 4 and 5. To me, the neat thing about it is that you play as 5 different characters with different gameplay styles and abilities. You end up crossing paths and experiencing the same scenario from the perspective of different characters. It's a tonal shift and if you want classic RE it's nowhere to be found, but that was never really my jam anyway. RE4 is the one that won me over.

Only if you care about the lore. You'll miss out on a handful of references and some nostalgia, but I don't think it's required. This game is standalone and its story is self-contained.

There are minor references to RE2, RE4 and RE6 in the game. But there's a huge visual, thus spoiler'ish, reference to one of those. So, if you played it you'll probably squeal when it's revealed.

Also I'd note with regards to RE Lore: It is pretty silly/off the hook. It's not one of those universes where it was well designed and curated, with a deep and meaningful backstory. Rather they just came up with shit for a game, and then kinda kept it going with later games. It gets very silly and strange a lot of the time.

Not that it is bad, but don't feel like you are missing out on some masterpiece of literature. You can totally jump into the series whenever and just understand that the basic story is "Company made a virus that made zombies. Zombies are bad. Kill Zombies."

The origin of the progenitor virus and the lore behind Wesker, the mansions, and Marcus are all actually quite interesting.

watch all the Resident Evil movies and then come back and play whatever the latest RE game is :mask:

Is it worth using ray or path tracing in this game? I've been reading a lot about noise or bubbling looking issues. Not sure if the recent Nvidia drivers helped with that. Frame rates aside, wondering if it is even worth turning on.

I played though the entire game with path tracing and unless you're just sitting there looking for it instead if playing the video game, you'll probably never notice it
I only launch my games to look at them...

RE:R looks pretty good across a variety of specs though.

Same and agree. With the moderate amount of denoising/boiling effect PT has in many areas, I'm sure many would prefer to just leave it off. Game/driver updates seemed to mitigate some of it initally, but it's still pretty bad in some areas of the game. I mostly noticed it in the care center level, which is a huge portion of the game.

Anyone know the cause for the stuttering? Get pretty big stutters when moving around. Constant stuttering, have most of the settings max with path tracing, DLSS and 2x frame generation. 5070ti. Turning down to regular ray tracing still has the stutters. Wondering if it is a lack of VRAM.

I just finished the game and the only stuttering I saw were a few spikes in the underground area after killing the spider. Other than that no stuttering with path tracing and DLSS. Maybe frame gen is the issue? I doubt it is vram as it never even allocated more than 14 GB on my 5070 ti. Some people have suggested disabling re bar and I have that disabled myself.

Have you already checked the easy things?
Latest driver's? All drivers and BIOS.
Good SSD? nVME preferably.
Resizable BAR enabled?
Ample RAM to complement VRAM?
Temperature throttling of CPU or GPU?
Not a bunch of crap running in the background?
Running latest Windows 11 or something else?

Are you playing at 4K? I usually only saw around 13GB VRAM usage on my 5080 maxed out with PT and 3x MFG enabled at 3440x1440. But I remember seeing initial Hardware Unboxed reporting over 16GB VRAM usage at 4K at those same settings. Otherwise, I didn't have any noticable stuttering issues on my playthrough at all.

Also, here's a nice ammo glitch for those who what to cheese through an insantiy run.

Drivers definitely matter with this game. You'll either want to use drivers from the fall of 2025 or the latest and greatest from the last 2 weeks. Anything in-between = a 40% performance hit and stutters when panning around.

I can't remember having any hitching at all

Does it resolve if you turn the textures and shadows down a notch?

I'm on 595.97 from the March 24th. Stutters seem to be during movement. They're a bit more pronounced than typical micro stutters.

I tried with path tracing, then turned down to ray tracing which did not help. I will see if ray tracing without frame gen 2x works. Using DLSS Quality.

set it to medium, does it still do it?

Heck at this point I would just start with everything on the lowest at my desired resolution and work my way up from there. Because if it does it with everything dialed down, there's something fundamentally wrong somewhere.

If in doubt, maybe try a DDU and clean driver install too

BF6 Retail micro stuttered for me even though beta was silk. Tried everything, other games were fine.

Eventually threw my hands up, DDU, installed same fucking driver, worked perfect from then on.

also a good suggestion. i still use it every time i upgrade my drivers....

Loaded it up quickly with ray tracing and frame gen disabled. Seems to be better, I am assume PT + frame gen = out of VRAM. But have not played it for long, will see it that fixes things. Frame rates are around 120 with RT, so RT without frame gen is probably the combination for me.

No way it's VRAM if you're at 1440p UW or lower. Likely VRAM if at 4K with PT and FG enabled.

2560x1440. I will say turning off frame gen got rid of it, at least 95% of them. Frame rates with RT still gets above 120 so that seems to be a good balance of performance. PT frame rates are around 70-80 without FG, which is too low. With PT & FG GPU-Z was showing 13GB or so of VRAM usage so it was probably hitting the limit.

New patch is out now, maybe that changes things.

I will say in some areas the game looks decent, in other areas it looks bad. Ignoring RT/PT settings, some things just look blurry and low resolution. Not sure if there is an issue with DLSS quality in this game or if it is something else. A Google search shows that resolution for objects being examined is very low resolution so I assume that is how it is supposed to be. Don't recall RE4 looking like this though.

Other areas do look better though. Just seems like it is a mixed bag.

Leon's face seems to be much better in terms of detail than Grace.

Yeah, as I posted before, I'm at 3440x1440 and saw around 13GB usage during my playthrough at DLSS quality, PT enabled and 3x MFG so I could be near my 240Hz monitor cap (usually average around 190 FPS and lowest was around 150 FPS) on a 5080. I saw no hitching or stuttering during my game mostly on the 2nd/fixed release of the RE9 Game Ready drivers (forgot the version already and have already updated since then - so whatever was previous to the current 595.97 driver) after the previous hotfix they released for the game. I would think 13GB should be well within the safe zone for exceeding VRAM and would only think it's an issue at 14.5+ GB utilization or so.

I posted the same thoughts about the lower-res textures and aliased objects when examing them as well. That's just how the game is in those areas regardless of settings on all platforms and I've seen reviewers point it out too. I think PT is almost not worth running in this game just because of the weird denoising issue it has and don't think you're really missing out at all running the game without it or even without RT enabled as well. Maybe I'm just a casual, but at no point were there any crazy lighting scenes where I thought PT was contributing greatly to the fidelity or mood of the game. But's it's hard to say without running through the game again with it disabled to see if I remember any scenes looking dramatically different from what I remembered.

Seems like VRAM usage was high for me, though maybe it changes in other parts of the game. In the end I am just leaving PT off so I don't need to use frame gen. It looks good enough, and it runs much smoother. I upped the frame rate cap to 140 below my refresh rate and with DLSS quality & RT it still gets in the 130s or so. On the Steam forums someone suggested enabling V sync in Nvidia app and capping at 120 but those did not help. Disabling PT and frame gen resulted in a mostly smooth experience for me and the game is short so not going to bother playing around with more settings now that it works and looks good enough.

PT did have a bit more blurriness as well, IMO. So no real loss that I could tell.

Quite enjoyed this game. Maybe I have become immune to action horror games at this point because I did not find it scary at all. I like how they started out with Grace as it was more scary, even if just atmospheric for me. But as it gets old they gradually transition more to action with Leon which kept me interested. Took me a little over 15 hours for one play through.

Leon desperately needs a storage chest. I know you can sell guns and buy them back, but what about excess ammo? Once you sell ammo it's gone forever. And selling ammo goes against my "what if I'm going to need this later" nature.

Also there seems to be an imbalance of gunpowder and scrap. So much more gunpowder than scrap, and it's useless without scrap.

My inventory is clogged real bad man! Though I'm coming to realize that I'm nearing the end and I'm probably not going to need any of this.
