Tekken 8

Namco is rolling out a demo this Thursday for PS5. The Xbox and Steam will get the same demo on 12/21.

It includes the following:
  1. Local Versus let's you try Jin, Kazuya, Paul and Nina along with a few stages (Urban Square - Evening, Yakushima, Sanctum)
  2. Story "The Dark Awakens" Ch. 1
  3. Arcade Quest Ch. 1 (Different from final version)
  4. Super Ghost Battle (Unlocks Later)
  5. Gallery (Partial)

That should be enough to figure out if it'll run well on your system and to figure out if you like the game or not. All the footage I've seen looks like Tekken 7 with better graphics, but I guess this will let me look under the hood a little more. Tekken at high levels and low levels = night at day different because there are so many moves. Pros might only use like 10 moves, but it won't keep rando players from using the other 5000 moves you probably don't know how to block.

The last Tekken I played was Tekken 2 ps1 I liked Jin the best just for her theme music.

Apparently there are game testers and whatnot that have the full-on final game already. I suppose that's a pretty decent sign they're going to make their January release date.

Based on the system reqs----should be easy to run.
I think they really targeted the console specs, rather than relying heavily on upscaling.

I played it for a few minutes and it's definitely Tekken. They tweaked a couple of move inputs, but they're things most people wouldn't even notice. They have the "easy" input mode turned on by default, which seems like an odd choice. Capcom did that for SF6, too. I don't really get it as I don't think inputs held 95% of people back from playing fighting games. Minus injured or disabled people of course.
There are literally like 15 upscaling methods to choose from, so people on a wide variety of systems should be happy. Lots of detail settings toggles, too. Atmos audio was playing out of the gate, which is nice.
I'm on board. I'll probably never be a Tekken hardcore again, but I still appreciate and enjoy the games casually.

EDIT: The AI is better than the earlier games and actually kinda sorta plays like a person now. With real players, there's a tendency to back off and not attack at certain points and the AI just never really would do that. If you waited a second or two, they'd charge at you. It now seems way less reckless and can probably help you get better at opening real players up.

nice. seeing a lot of devs releasing demos lately, maybe theyre finally getting the hint.
Yeah it's like they all had forgotten how to make em', and then all of a sudden remembered about all those demo disc's from the 90's.
And now they call themselves innovated and that they are on the forefront of technology just for releasing a hour long demo smh.

RTX 4070 and a 7800X3D.

Using a 1440p monitor, I ran it at 4K and downscaled using DLDSR in the Nvidia control panel. And then selected DLSS quality mode, in game.

Ran a little framey in the menus, but ran perfectly in game and looked super clean, even with Anti-Aliasing set to its lowest setting.

That said....I don't think the game looks amazing. It looks solid and certainly has high res textures. But there isn't even sub-surface scattering or any other special techniques used on character skin or clothing surfaces. So, they look pretty flat. Nina's face looks pretty grainy, due to how they did the texture detail.

-------------------

Best feeling Tekken ever. Flows better and has better snap to the animations.

I wish there was a training mode WTF?!

None of the demo characters have ever really been my thing, however.

The funny thing about the demo is that they have all (or at least most) of the characters in there, you just can't select them. If you tinker around with the arcade/ghost/story mode, there are at least a dozen different characters to fight against. I don't love the characters you can select, but I at least used to play Kazuya a bit back in the day. He seems to have changed quite a bit and isn't so "simple but effective" anymore. The good 'ol electric upper or hell sweep mixup still works, though.

CDKeys has big discounts on this, BTW.

Yeah, I already jumped on that deal. The supreme mack daddy version is like $30 off. Considering Armor King has been outed as one of the first DLC characters, I definitely at least want the first set.

As I'm starting to kinda get bored with Street Fighter 6, maybe I'll give Tekken 8 a serious run. I'm sure I'll never be as good as I was back in the T3/TTT era, but I was at least pretty decent all the way through Dark Resurrection. If the AI bots truly are similar to human players, I figure that should help. I mainly just need to get used to the defensive side of the game. With so many multi-part moves, resets, and lockdowns, it's tough to really practice that side of the game without a posse of training partners. As a working adult with no arcades or dorm-mates, that's not so easy :p

Yup. Tekken by far is my fave fighter, SF close 2nd. I'd be deluding myself to think I will ever be as good as I was back in the T3/TTT era. Still will enjoy it.

I'm still a sucker for Street Fighter, but SF6 is a bit too chaotic for my tastes. During the late 90's I transitioned over to Tekken and ended up liking it just as much, though.
With T8, I mainly just want to be somewhat competitive online. I'm not looking to be Arslan Ash or anything, I just don't want to lose to borderline random mashing or super simplistic stuff. As long as I can play competently and keep a win/loss record over .500, I can deal with that. Well, that and I guess I want to learn to better get off the damn ground. Seemingly everything I used to do prior to T6 doesn't seem to work well anymore.

I trained my ghost Jin for 90mins yesterday. Decided to verse it today and I got wrecked. This feature is going to be so nice for warming up before playing ranked matches or learning matchups. The ghost has only beaten me a few times but comes very close most of the time.

It's interesting that they're still showing these gameplay reveal trailers. If you play the demo, you can actually fight nearly the entire cast right now. I haven't played enough to know if they're all there, but it seems like most are.

Did some fine tuning for the DSR scaling. 10% looks best when downscaling 4K to 1440p. Any lower than that is too sharp. 0% has noticeable sharpness artifacts, like double edges on straight objects. And everything overall has a 'fake' look to it.

I dunno why the menus are framey. But in game, my RTX 4070 only uses around 50% GPU, when downscaling 4K to 1440p, with DLSS Quality set. It does of course look slightly better when downscaling from true 4K (in particular, aliasing on character legs is a touch smoother). But, I enjoy the lower power usage/Heat, for long sessions.

56k alert. Here's a little photo dump to show off how the game really looks. 4K downscaled to 1440p, using DLDSR and DLSS Quality.

I don't think its the best looking game. Shaders for material surfaces and skin, could be a lot better. But, it looks solid, has plenty of color, and the visuals are actually easy to track while playing.

This stage changes the time of day, depending upon the round. Which is often seen in recent Namco fighters.

Her skin can often look really grainy or almost bubbly, due to how some of the VFX look while mid-motion. You don't really see it while actually playing. But, it makes some of the screenshots look bad. I wonder which effect is doing that.

We'll see about the final game and trying more characters. But, I still feel like this may be the best 'feeling' Tekken, ever. I've really been enjoying my time with the demo.

I haven't played in so long. I'm looking forward to seeing some Jack Gamplay. Jack was such a badass! I loved his moves more than anyone else. Probably my all time favorite fighting game character. Jack II being a close second.

*er wait a minute, I'm thinking prototype Jack as second...yeah it's been a while. Jack II is regular Jack lol.

Funny thing about Jack is that he's really, really good now. He was always kinda lousy in the older titles, but somewhere around Tekken 5 he became a tournament-winning character.

I got a chance to play vs. mode with one of my old friends over the weekend. He's one of those players who has a knack of landing Paul's deathfist in seemingly every scenario. It still more or less works, but I also noticed that all of the other demo characters had a hard punish for blocking it, too. That hasn't always been the case.
I'm looking forward to testing out some of King's grabs, especially the giant swing. Not clue why, but in Tekken 7 either the motion or timing needed to do it was off in some way. That's a motion I can still whip out in all the old games, especially after a blockstring. In T7, not so much. My fingers are crossed that 8 fixes things.

Jack was an amazing troll character to play with back in the day.

Yeah, the demo has like every kind of upscaling. DLSS, FSR1, FSR2, two kinds of temporal AA, Nvidia Image Scaling. It even has a bilinear scaler. Kinda strange, but also very cool!

The demo does not have DLAA or AMD's Native AA.

*my screenshots above, are DLDSR 4K, downscaled to 1440p, while also running DLSS Quality. RTX 4070. Uses like 50% GPU.

OH! so thats what that is. i couldnt figure out how to just turn it off altogether though.
also, game play seems really dumbed down from what i remember, like too simplified....
Did you skip the training?

The game starts you in the new simplified control method. Press L1 to switch between classic controls and the new, simple style.

The demo very much makes this seem like Namco's Street Fighter 6. Disregarding what you think of the fighting component (it's Tekken - no more, no less), they have features, modes, graphical settings, additional social stuff, etc. etc. galore. Granted, Tekken 7 wasn't exactly "bare bones," but they went wild with all the stuff to see and do in 8.

The entire presentation of it all is a lot less cringe than SF6. I've played every SF game heavily but skipped 6 because everything about it is painful. Tekken's presentation is thankfully straight-forward and within the tone of what I'd expect. Street Fighter 6 may as well have been designed (artistically) by an inner-city youth who spent their day smoking weed and watching Cardi B music videos.

i agree but what about the goofy Wii Mii-like avatars in the arcade section, they seem kinda childish for what tekken is, imo.
