Red Dead Redemption 2

Whatever Rockstar does to bring their games to life should be copied by everyone making open-world games. RDR2 and GTA4 have pretty horrendous gameplay...but they're compelling and still fun for some reason. I found myself constantly frustrated by the controls and how challenging even basic tasks could be. Yet I kept going because I liked the world they created and wanted to spend more time in it. I found GTA5 to be the only game they've ever made where the gameplay lived up to everything else.

I don't know if you guys have bad eye sight, thick fingers or just not very adaptable.. and I say that with love :p

By the third or fourth hour, I never thought controls were all that bad. Sure, we've all fallen off the horse by bumping in to something.it can be super frustrating indeed.
But just like any other game, it takes a little while to get the gameplay, combat, mechanics down to where you're doing great.

Were you all like 40 hours in and still yelling "bah, mehr controls!!!"?

You died, don't blame the game controls. :p

Besides, you really can't progress in the game if you're struggling with the controls. At that point, that's a you problem, not the games. Lol

My point is that once you get used to the controls, they shouldnt be an issue.

I also believe they revised the horse mechanics since the release. Making it a bit easier to ride around on.

I don't think anyone complaining about the controls is dying because of them. Gunplay is borderline automatic considering you lock on to enemies for headshots at will. You're like a cowboy John Wick. It's more that there are too many steps to do basic things. Functions like getting on your horse overlap with functions like putting a random stranger in a chokehold. Certain mechanics are introduced for one mission and then never used again...but they're always there and overlap with things you do all the time. Weapons/items/etc. are based around 2 separate clumsy inventory screens and it's pretty easy to select the wrong thing. I've played the game beginning to end twice and still never liked the controls. I might have only died a handful of times in both passes, but I ended up doing something I didn't want to pretty often.

The latest update fixed the annoying low audio volume at game launch issue.

I do agree the controls are just weird. I don't know why Rockstar had to make everything so 'different' compared to most other 3rd person games. If I stop playing RDR2 for even a short time it takes me like 15 minutes to figure out how the hell to do even the most basic things again without accidently shooting the town sheriff.

I can jump into any of the modern AC games, or heck, even GTA5 without any issues.

Downloading this game again I deleted because all the space it took up on a SSD.
But I installed a HDD again going to backup my Entire Epic collection again on the HDD.
120 gigs takes me about 24 hours to download.

I finished this game last night and freaking loved it. A few thoughts:
  • I mostly ignored the side-quests because the main quests were so engrossing and I just wanted to see how it all played out. I know I’m leaving a lot of content on the table. I’m going to hit them in my next playthrough.
  • The story isn’t exactly profound or new, it’s just presented and put together in such a great way that it hooks you. The acting and dialogue are pretty damn great and you become emotionally invested in many of the characters.
  • The game world is gorgeous and feels alive, which I think everybody pretty much knows at this point.
  • I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the epilogues. Potential spoiler, maybe not, but to be considerate: I could play an entire game as John Marston. I know he’s the protagonist in RDR1 but I’m not a console gamer so I haven’t played it. I really enjoyed his storyline in the epilogues.
  • I bought the game at launch on PC and played through about 15-20% of the story and then stopped playing. The era isn’t exactly my passion and the controls/gunplay are pretty horrendous. I picked it back up last month and I’m glad I did. It would be a shame to miss this game based on those faults, it more than makes up for them.

The Rockstar team = the best at bringing a game world to life. Some of it is writing, some of it is hiring good voice actors, some of it is pacing, and some of it is just simply attention to detail. I still maintain that most of their games aren't particularly great (gameplay-wise), but the worlds are so good that I rarely care.
Looking back at all of the other open-world/sandbox games I've played over the last decade...most just aren't good. They check the right boxes or they play well, but they just aren't compelling. While Naughty Dog doesn't make the same type of open world game, I think they're one of the only other developers that really "get it" like Rockstar does.

Strangely enough I can't seem to get into their games, the only one I finished was Max Payne 3, their GTA's and red dead's may look great, the gameplay is anything but, red dead 2 is so excruciatinly slow I did not want to keep playing, once travel time exeeds play time I get tired of games pretty fast.

There's a very effective fast travel system. If you're just looking to go through the story and avoid side-quests, you just take a train everywhere

I sprung for a Springfield rifle for the scope I didn't even know where the the rifle shop was in town till I seen a video. My problem is no scopes in the game its like shooting ants on the screen if you are not close enough.

Just getting into this game. I am digging it. A bit slow at first. Lots of riding around to get places.

when you get to your main camp, buy the map on the back of your wagon to enable fast travel. then you can travel from there or a fire to "anywhere" youve been.
Had no clue. Actually have no clues about much anything, any tips are appreciated.

Fast travel was borderline worthless in the original console version thanks to looooooong load times. By the time you finally "fast" traveled someone, you could have ridden halfway across the entire map manually. It's great on the PC, though. At least assuming you have a decent SSD. Saved me a lot of time. You don't want to overuse it (you'll miss lots of random events that can have rewards), but it makes the game less tedious.

Tip-wise, the thing that helped me most was not to manually aim at anything. It's too hard, even if you're a wizard with a mouse/analog. Instead, just tap the aim button once to lock on to enemies. It's practically too good, but the game isn't really supposed to be hard.

i did that too but on controller. tap to aim, shoot, let go. tap to aim, shoot, let go. worked waaaaay better that holding aim and trying to move from target to target.

I have now played RDR2 through 3 times (1 PS4, twice on PC). Best SP gaming experience I think I've had. Lord I've tried RD online, but just for the life of me cannot get into it. Pretty pissed that Rockstar is still crapping on SP DLC and wish this would change. Maybe moving to the PS5 more SP content will be added. One can dream. I'll play through a 4th time!

I’m on my second playthrough and really enjoying it, more so than my first playthrough. I’m just really into this game right now, which is weird because it’s a slower-paced game and I usually need more action. It’s somewhere between a game and a good movie and I can’t get enough of it.

I have a feeling that with load times on console this will be more of a slow travel system.

I was probably 15 hours in before I figured out what deadeye even was. After that, it felt like cheating as I can headshot everyone. Keyboard/mouse almost feels OP.

I bet the total bounties on me are at least $3000.00 lol. Gettin hard to go anywhere on the map without a posse on my tail. Mr. nice guy left the game after they shot my all time favorite horse.
I was trying my best to be nice and that finally went out the window.

So finally finished last night. Got the "best" ending. Finally figured out the game overall and how the honor system worked.

Is that what bar on the bottom that shows up from time to time for? I guess to max it out, you have to do nothing wrong and never purposely commit a crime, between committing crimes?

Wish I could play. It likes to hang after the initial load screen. Did all the trouble shooting. Unistall/reinstall too. Same weird fucking issue.

Nope. I think it may be a weird HDR conflict. I thought reinstalling would fix it but no joy.

*Sigh* I just finished the part where Arthur died and yes, still gets me right in my heart, and this is my second play through.
